Es un edificio muy bonito y en excelente estado de conservación. Lamentablemente cuando fuimos nosotros estaba cerrada y simplemente pudimos verla por fuera. Está muy cerca de la zona central.

Our cruise excursion took us to the most commercial areas, unfortunately; however, friends had recommended that we search out this synagogue, and we were glad we did. Docent Agi was highly informative about the origins of the congregation and its historic building - the oldest in continuous use under the American flag, and the second oldest in the Western Hemisphere. It's also one of only four synagogues in the world with a sand floor, connecting it directly with the Spanish Inquisition and the expulsion of Jews from Spain. Just a five-minute walk from downtown, it was well worth exploring, and a highlight of our cruise.

We visited the synagogue today and enjoyed it so much! Àgi, the docent met us inside and gave us a wonderful history lesson while answering our questions and showing us around. Can’t recommend it enough!

This is a unique synagogue, the oldest continuously active anywhere in the US or its territories and just as active today. Founded in the late 1700s when St. Thomas was a Dutch colony, it has flourished and faded, divided and re-united as the economy and successive waves of Jewish immigrants rose and fell. Several of its members have been notable Thomasonians, including two governors, one of whom was instrumental in transfering the island to the US. Operating as a reformed Jewish Congreation, It is one of five in the US that uses a sand floor in the sanctuary as a memorial to the Spanish inquisition and must be one of very few that has open air windows into the sanctuary. There is a small museum that tells the story broad strokes. Following Sephardic traditions, the pulpit is on the opposite wall from the ark containing the torahs. One of the torahs is on loan from a congregation destroyed in the holocaust. All are wonderfully dressed and jeweled.

We happened by when a renewal of wedding vows was taking place. The rabbi is a warm and wonderful man and recent addition from a mid-Atlantic congregation.

We also watched the custodian charged with cleaning the sand. Cleaning it and returning it to the sanctuary floor this must be a full-time job.

There is a wonderful gift shop well stocked with beautiful keepsakes.

Did I mention there is no charge for admission, but a donation is always welcome.

You can hike up the hill, take a cab or try parking nearby.

This was well worth the walk. The historical significance of this place of worship had us awestruck. The volunteers from the congregation have done a remarkable job of renovating and providing a wealth of information to anyone that visits. There is a scroll that was in Nazi possession during the war marked and numbered, that took our breath away. The synagogue is active, welcoming and beautiful.

Nous avons eu droit à un cours d'histoire sur cette église. Elle est bien située et facile d'accès. S'inscrit bien dans un tour de ville à pied.

The trek up the hill is formidable but once you enter you are immediately in history. The Holocaust is not the only form of obscenity where Jews were targeted for annihilation. In the 16 century Sephardics were fleeing the Spanish Inquisition.
I am a convinced Christian but felt a sense of peace in this place.
Regardless of your faith (or even lack of it) this place cannot fail to make you realize that man’s inhumanity to man is not new but we must strive to end it.

Et besøg værd hvis man er i nærheden. En lille men meget hyggelig jødisk kirke med masser af charme og sand på gulvet...

This historic synagogue is breathtaking in its history and furnishings. It is wonderfully maintained, with the original sand floors (you will learn the meaning of the sand floors from the docent). The guide was friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable, herself a congregant and longtime resident of the island. Although the walk to the synagogue is up a somewhat steep hill from downtown Charlotte Amalie, it is worth the walk.
