A fun ride.

If you are visiting St. Thomas and want something inexpensive to do, this is it. We took the ferry to St. John and it was a fun ride there and back. There are a few stores nearby and there is a good restaurant right across the street, Cruz Bay Landing, where we ate before heading back to St. Thomas

Basic Ferry ride

Basic ferry ride... beautiful pictures of the island. Staff weren't very friendly. Price was reasonable and ferry was on time. it took about 45 minutes via taxi from cruise port to get to the ferry

Efficient Ferry system between St John and St Thomas

The VITRAN Ferry operates a daily service between St Thomas and St John. The hours of operation are 5:30am to 10:00pm, but may slightly vary on weekends. The cost of one-way tickets are $8.15 for adults, $1.50 for seniors and $1.00 for children. Locals pay a slight lower fare. Tickets may be purchased online from the St John Ferry ticketing company website or purchased at the Urman Victor Fredericks Marine Terminal at Red Hook, St. Thomas or the St. John Ferry Terminal, at Cruz Bay, St. John. The Ferry trip takes approximately 20 minutes, and you have the option of sitting inside (if you arrive early) or on the uncovered upper deck which offers great photo opportunities.

If you are travelling from St John by car, the Port at Red Hook offers parking facilities. If taking public transportation from Charlotte Amelie, walk north on Rumer Drive towards the hospital, and wait for a Safari Bus at the Bus Stop on Alton Adams Drive, which is in front of the hospital. You will need to confirm that the bus is going to Red Hook before boarding. On St John, the Ferry dock is within walking distance of most attractions, and the VITRAN buses all end their routes in this general area. Note that the VITRAN buses do not operate on weekends on St. John, so you will need to plan around taking taxis if visiting on a weekend.

I found the system to be quite efficient, and made use of public transportation options on both islands getting to and from the ferry.

Unorganized, do not honor their rules

I paid for a round trip ticket. In the way back from St. John I had my reservation for 9:30 trip. Got to the port at 9, there were few cars already in line. I waited with others and told the attendant that I have reservation. When boarding started, few trucks showed up including a dump truck and they loaded them up ahead of the queue. Bottom line we didn't make it to the boat because it got full and they did not honor the reservation. They said there is a bigger boat at 10. So, we waited as we didn't have any other option. Got on the second boat. They wanted to charge us again. I said I already paid for round trip. The lady said that was a different boat. So, we had to pay an additional $50 or we had to get off the boat and wait an hour and a half for the Ber Re Barge to come back. Since we have a plane to catch, we paid and got stiffed for the return trip fee. Love Ciry barge is bigger and friendlier staff. I will not use the Big Red Barge.

You get from St Thomas to St John and back. These people are the RUDEST people I have ever dealt with. I watched as a man asked if the ferry took cars back to Red Hook, the employee answered with the name of the barge. Would have been faster just to say yes, but he refused to answer the man’s question. Employees working on the boat were rude and disrespectful and also smoked weed on the job, can’t imagine it was safe…..

Do not buy a round-trip ticket

You will probably be asked if you want to buy a round-trip ticket on the ferry. DO NOT buy it, because you will quite possibly find it more convenient to take another ferry on the return trip. In that case, the second half of the round-trip ticket will be worthless. (I have mine to the person selling tickets, in hopes that someone could get some use out of it.) Plus, there is no discount for a round-trip ticket. Too bad they didn't tell me that when they asked if I wanted a round-trip ticket.

The rudest staff !

We went from red hook to cruz bay and back with the car and I have to say that on both ends, the guys directing the cars are extremely rude! They yelled several times at people about backing up and they don't seem to grasp that a lot of people are tourists and that the barge is the first taste of the islands they are getting . Most people have trouble parallel parking , much less backing up in a tight space on a boat while a very rude staff is yelling at you!

Ask for pricing BEFORE you board.

Frustrated that everything I saw advertised said 10-12 dollar ferry ride and it cost me 50 dollars. Cash only.

Ferry back to St. Thomas

We took a different ferry to get to St. John but took this one back to St. Thomas as it was faster. We bought our tickets just before boarding (there was a pretty long line) and could use credit card. It was an uneventful ride back.

BEWARE - No refunds given even for bad service.

Absolutely terrible. If I could give a negative rating, I would. Booked a return ticket and used the Booking Invoice for the first leg of the trip; received a receipt for that leg. At no time was I told that I needed the receipt for the return leg. For the return I used the Booking Invoice again, which showed a return ticket and the price that I paid and this was refused by the ticketing agent, saying I needed the receipt given on the first leg. I had no idea where the receipt was, probably buried in the luggage somewhere. I refused to pay again but the agent called the captain to turn the barge around. I finally paid the full fare in cash for the return trip. When I arrived home I called Love City to try to get a refund but the agent was very uncooperative and basically told me to get lost. NEVER, EVER USE THIS FERRY COMPANY.
