This was our favorite beach of all of the beaches we visited while on St. John for 5 days. The water was clear (for the most part- at different times throughout the day it would get a bit murky especially when it rained), and had an abundant amount of sea life, coral (mostly dead but still super neat), rocks, trees and sea grass giving a very diverse and fun place to snorkel. It lived up to the hype and provided a core memory of watching our kids swim with turtles. We were the 2nd family to arrive to the beach that morning (0830) and we were able to grab one of the 3 gazebos that are right on the beach. This was a prefect landing spot for us and provided shade, shelter, etc for the day. The gazebos are first come, first serve (no cost) and we were able to park right in front of the gazebo we staked out. Everything you need to spend the day at the beach is right there with food/drink vendors, paddle board, kayak, snorkel gear, chairs and canopy rentals directly across the street. The beach did not get overcrowded and had plenty of space. We swam with a nurse shark 1,000 yards off the beach, tons of stingray, barracuda, squid and so many other species of fish and again, the highlight was swimming with the turtles.

This beach was by far our FAVORITE spot off of St Thomas-AMAZING environment, people, families, couples-everyone needs to visit Maho! After you pass the 'Jeep Dealership' aka Trunk Bay-no offense to those who are smart and rented a jeep! LOL but you'll know what we mean once you drive past and keep on the winding mountain roads of St. John! ;) You can pull up (we got the 1030am ferry from Red Hook-Red Barge $65 car ferry roundtrip) and just park wherever on side of street next to the vendors on your right with delicious drinks, souvenirs, rentals for anything you can imagine! Super stoked we did this for a day, will absolutely be looking to come back to this spot! Also a super awesome snorkel spot-effortless, sea turtles, stingrays swim up to the shore. Oh-but make sure you have a drink in hand when entering the waters :)

Disappointed in the lack of places to eat, expensive and poor quality. No showers to rinse off sand, bathrooms were deplorable. The beach was ok.

One of the closest major beaches to Coral Beach, this was definitely one of my favorites. It's a gorgeous beach where white egrets and shore birda pepper the rocky parts of the shore and there is abundant snorkeling. If you find yourself hungry there is a major build up that has happened that features a snack shack and standard cocktails and beverages.
Unfortunately, there were a few days of rain so our stay was cut a few hours short, but it brought pure peace, blissful blues, and lots of good beach reading and snoozes while we were there.

There is no running water for hand washing with this food service!? Food was just ok but I get nervous if people can’t sanitize their hands.

Another great VI beach. Saw flying fish’s and swam along with sea turtles. Nice beach area that is not rocky and great for building sand castles.

Maho Beach is definitely worth the trip. Plenty of parking. Had shade if you need it, although a canopy of sort is always recommended in STJ. Snorkeling is decent. Usually, there are plenty of turtles and the occasional ray. You can rent paddle boards if you like. They have food and drinks for sale. The drinks are yummy!!

Hands-down, our favorite beach of the vacation! This was recommended by one of the locals, and it did not disappoint… The first day it was a little bit windy, so we were unable to snorkel, but when we went back on our last day, the water was clear and we were able to snorkel and see several areas of turtles a short distance off the beach! They have food trucks with food and drinks right across the street if you forget anything in your cooler. Lots of little areas where you can find some shade and nice soft sand especially the south end of the beach. A perfect place to spend a traditional beach day on St. John!

This beach was wonderful. We took a ferry from st thomas right away in the morning and drove our jeep to this beach. Was not crowded and water was beautiful. There were some small shops and food of needed.

Absolutely disgusting. Maho Bay used to be a wonderful spot but nowadays looks, feels, and smells like Miami Beach. Bodies are packed against one another, littering "eco-friendly" cups and utensils and spoiling the natural habitat with banned sunscreens. It's no wonder the bay is turning green and the majority of the sea turtles have tumors and regularly get hit by boats. It is a shame the ocean has to take the punch for this poor display of humanity and that we are sitting back with a painkiller in our hands watching to the tune of Blue Chair Bay.

Hi! We haven't been to St. Johns before- we were thinking of trying to go in late August- any recommendations on where to stay? We have 3 kids. Looks like we want to be close to this beach!

Jeep rental is as important as a place to stay. We used Aqua Blu to rent our Jeep. It was new, very clean and perfect for handling the rocky roads and dark, narrow streets. There are no street signs and not many street lights at night. Quite an adventure! We rented the Villa Monticello which was in a gated community overlooking Cruz Bay. It was absolutely perfect. Remember, you get what you pay for.

Any place in Cruz Bay is good depending on what style of food you want. Please take the ferry from Red Hook and do not drive over via the car ferry. They are not plenty and they are needed to bring cargo over and trash out. There are open air taxis that take you to Maho. There is nothing but beach at Maho. Our favorite in Cruz Bay is Longboards

Maho now has a drink and food truck.
A safari is easy so our taxi if you will.
It’s like 10 minutes drive. You will love it.

Most cruises are docked in St Thomas - you would take a ferry to St John and a taxi ride (great views of island on way) to Maho. Be sure to find out from your cruise director how much time you have as well as the ferry and taxi schedule. Ferry to and from Charlotte Amalie (where ships dock) have their own schedule different from ferry from Red Hook.

Were you staying on St. John or did you come from St. Thomas? We are wanting to take the Red Hook Ferry and wondered if it is open. We haven't tried Maho before, but would like too. How was the water, murky, turtles?

We stayed on st john and used red hook ferry. Maho beach was the most beautiful beach we have ever seen before hurricane. The palm trees are gone and i heard there is no shade now. We did see sea turtles there and at francis bay which is the next beach from maho. We liked how calm water is at both beaches

Hi. We are arriving in St. John from St. Thomas via Ferry. Understand Maho Beach is the best beach for snorkeling. Are there facilities for food or restrooms nearby? Is there an area to rent snorkel equipment? How far is this from the Ferry drop off and are taxis easily accessible?
Any suggestions of must do in St. John while there for 4-5 hours?

Yes, there is a public bathroom at the south end of the beach. This is a food stand for some beverages and snacks. You may bring your own Picnic there. Suggest to bring your own snorkeling gear. As I recall only Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay have full facility and services. This Maho Bay is a less trafficked beach and a lot quieter to enjoy. It's a 25 mins drive from the ferry. Return tax will be hard to catch. The dollar bus is dirt cheap but the schedule can be way off. I'd suggest you rent a jeep and explore the island on your own. 4-5 hours are pretty tight to visit it though. Have fun.
