Windmill was closed but interesting to read off the boards the history of the salt panning in the area. Part of the coastal path walk.

Located on the coastal path just out off St Monan's just heading towards Anstruther. You will find the restored Windmill and the remains of the Salt pan buildings and workings. The windmill is in the hands of the coastguard and as such entry to the building isn't possible. It was built to pump up the water needed for the process of the Salt pans. The Pans remains are on the shore between the windmill and the sea and there are information boards placed around the old workings. I imgine the cool sea breeze would have been needed when the coalfires were evaporating of the water to leave the salt.

We found this a really interesting part of the walk and the is a little garden area and bench or two about hands. Also close by is the old seashore swimming pool, still relatively intact but starting to show signs of neglect, not as good as the one before Pittenweem also on this walk.

The windmill looks great for a house and is a great place for somebody to be coastguarding this place. The history here about salt was fascinating and there is a few remains of the buildings people worked in.

We parked near the public toilet block (open) at the top of the hill from the harbour where we had dropped my parents off. There were plenty free spaces and we then found a flight of steps between the houses to the Coastal path.
My parents walked on the flat to the path from the harbour and they passed a small parking area there too.
We sat on a bench and ate our picnic then 2 of us walked along the seafront past the walled sea water pool where there were some brave blue swimmers!
At the foot of the steps to the windmill there are a couple of story boards which tell the history of the salt pans at St. Monans and this was interesting.
The windmill was closed due to Covid when we were there in June so I have no information about the interior however the view from the top of the steps made it worth the hike up.

Really interesting walk along the coast and was delighted to come across this. Beautiful setting and plenty information for tourists. My walk was on a wet dreary day but the path is solid and good for walking in all weather. Definitely worth a wee venture.

While on the scenic route to St. Andrews we stopped by the idyllic village of St Monans to take in the beauty of the coastal path and also see this pretty little windmill. Back in the days, there was a salt panning industry here and the windmill was used to pump seawater for processing. Now it just stands forlorn for an industry long past. Still, it’s a nice walk to and climb to the windmill even if it doesn't appear to be open for visits. There’s some information onsite, which is a nice distraction from the picturesque coast.

Lovely walk along to the windmill, short climb up the winding steps to the viewing tower and a fantastic view. Our young boys loved it! Small donation made on way out. Very quirky, worthwhile experience.
