Excellent job, Turiste Libre! 👍
I especially liked Derrik's description of Tijuana as the "United Nations of Mexico." The diversity of the population in Tijuana was not something I was aware of until just a couple of years ago - in large part, thanks to his tour. Prior to that, when I visited Tijuana, I had feelings that were similar to the ones he described among his guests - the feeling of freedom - but I wasn't sure why I felt it, or what to make of it. After the tour with Turista Libre, my feelings about Tijuana evolved from "I feel so free there" to "I love that Tijuana is for everyone." It's exciting to be there and to think about the role that the city has played in the lives of so many who have sought better lives than the ones they left behind. At the same time, being there gives me a greater appreciation for the advantages and privileges I've had throughout my life as a citizen of the US.

Derrik was awesome! We used his tour company in early September 2020. He was knowledgeable, prompt, warm, engaging, and fun. Do not hesitate. You won’t be disappointed!

I can't say enough good things about Turista Libre. I planned a private tour with my two sons ages 5 and 7 and we had a GREAT time. Derrik took care of all the details and made sure we had a great time. I always felt safe and it was a super fun adventure for my kids.

Had a fabulous introduction to Mexico by way of a private tour with Derrik of Turista Libre in Tijuana.
Our family of 5 (3 teenagers aged 18, 16, 14) met Derrik on the US side of the border in San Diego on a Monday morning (we had driven 3 hours from Los Angeles - traffic out of LA was a killer). The Turista Libre tips for parking were spot-on and we didn't have any problems. Derrik walked us across the border to Tijuana and it took all of 10 minutes (including time for some form-filling). It was just as easy coming back in at the end of the day.
It's not easy to entertain and engage teenagers especially those with preconceived (and erroneous) notions of the place they would be visiting, but Derrik was a gem with them.
In the short 4 hour tour that we booked, we managed to cover a whole lot of ground in the Turitsta Libre minibus, visiting a local market, a trendy taco food-truck park, the border Wall, a local ice-creamery which served ice cream in 80 different flavours, with time to stop for lucha libre masks and bottles of local (Mexican) coca cola.
Derrik is a walking encyclopaedia - he can discuss any topic whether it's about Mexico or not. The tour was informative and lively, and it made our first foray into Central America very memorable. The visit to the border wall / fence was particularly poignant. Lunch at the taco food-truck park was delicious - and having now tasted tacos as they're supposed to taste, I would say I guess I haven't really eaten tacos before! The trip to the local market was a sensory feast - mounds of chillis, pastes, Christmas decorations on sale ... try the dried seasoned crickets. We bought a small packet to bring home.
If you're holidaying in San Diego / Los Angeles, a day-trip to Tijuana would certainly be something different to do. And with Turista Libre, it was fuss-free and a fantastic way to see the city, from a local's perspective and with nary a poncho/sombrero/donkey dressed as a zebra in sight.

11 year old, 13 year old and 2 x 53 year olds thoroughly enjoyed our day out from San Diego to Tijuana during a vacation in USA from far away. Derrick's well-informed, kind and flexible approach opened our eyes to the history, culture, current situation and fantastic food of Tijuana. He also gently convinced us that Mexico warrants another whole trip or 2. We had interesting, respectful conversations about religion, history, environment, politics and Derrick went out of his way to make sure we brought home some memories particularly pertinent to our family's traditions.

A group of 7 of us made this a bachelor party activity, and it was really phenomenal. Best fish tacos I've ever had, a great brewery, and an awesome cocktail place were a few of our stops. We always felt very safe, and Derrik was incredible in both his recommendations as well as flexibility. Highly recommended.

I took my 13-year-old son on a private Tijuana tour with Derrik. My son is learning the Spanish language and I wanted him to have some exposure to genuine Mexican culture (not the tourist stuff). Derrik (Turista Libre) was the perfect choice. We could not have asked for a better day. Derrik truly has a gift to be able to connect with people of all ages. He quickly established a rapport with my son. The experiences that we had that day and the things that we learned about real life in Tijuana were priceless. Many thanks to Derrik!

We (my wife and I) had a five-hour foodie and sightseeing tour of Tijuana with Derrik. Absolutely terrific. Started off in the market, moved on to Alicia's seafood tacos (also adorable), hit a fancier taco restaurant, spent time at the Wall (highly, highly recommended), got a great tour of the city's monuments and neighborhoods, and in general got an authentic glimpse of Tijuana. Derrik is a wonderful guide -- a Midwesterner by birth, a Tijuanan by choice, and a wonderful font of information about the city, economy, politics, you name it. Small groups with a guide allow one a quick but intimate experience with the area, and Derrik was one of the best we've ever toured with. Easy to meet up with him -- you link up on the US side of the walking border, walk into Mexico, and you're off in his Jeep. We've already recommended him to other Tijuana visitors, who also thought him terrific, and would readily go back.

My husband and I went on this tour in late June. We are Australian and in our late 20s. We chose an 8 hour private tour which was amazing! Derrik is a lovely, kind and informative guide. We had a great day with him. We had some ideas about where we wanted to go and so did he. It really is fully customized. Nothing was rushed. My husband and I crossed the border on the way in and out which was fine. Overall, if you want to see Tijuana, book this tour. It is safe, easy going and fun! Thanks again Derrik!

is this tour family/ kid friendly?.
I think it depends on the tour. They have set tours, such as the micro-brewery tour; the market hop, the taco tour, etc.-some might be suitable for kids, some not. I think the way to go for families with younger children is to book a private tour. That way you can set your own itinerary.

Hey there,
This would totally depend which tour you choose. There are group tours which are cheaper but they are more set schedules. The private tours are slightly more expensive but you can literally pick what you want to see (or ask the advice of your tour guide).
If you email them they'll give you all the information you need.

There is a McDonalds on the US side of the border where you meet - it's easy to find because the SD Trolley's final stop is right in front of that McDonalds. So find that trolley stop, and you've essentially found the meeting place.

We are currently patients at a clinic in Tijuana. We will have Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings open. Will you pick us up here at the clinic and return us here at the end of the tour?

Hi. I am also a previous client. The best way to contact them is through e-mail; there's a "Contact" option on their Web site.
I don't think they'll pick you up for one of the public public tours but you could arrange a private tour and they would probably do that. I did a private tour and really enjoyed it.

Prices start at $100US per person for groups of two to 10, $75 for 10 to 14, and $50 for 15 or more, but vary depending on the number of people and the specifics of the itinerary you're asking for.
The price included meals for us, as well as some beverages.
There is a deposit to reserve a tour as well, that gets applied to your balance
