Guided tour ONLY. Museum and archeology site are closed to the public. They are concentrating on building a refuge for Jaguars. Although they are doing good work, we were very disappointed having heard about this place from friends who went before the closures and were able to explore the paths and ruin on their own and visit the museum. The suggested donation is $600 pesos per person. We saw few birds, no mammals, a few iguanas. Three tours a day. We went on the 11:30 tour.

This archeological site, while not fully excavated, is a tour de force. The amazing history and architecture of this small city boggles the mind. This was our second visit to the site and we had the wonderfully pleasant privilege of having Alberto Chavez of Homietours as our guide. His passion for the history of the site and of the various Meso-American civilizations that have uninterruptedly inhabited Copalito, and his staggering knowledge of the fauna and animal life kept us enthralled. Thank you Alberto.

Wonderful tour of this site with Tomas Vicente, a native of Oaxaca with excellent English skills. Tomas was engaging and attentive to the various needs of our cruise shore excursion group. Thomas also does independent tours if you want to discover more of Oaxaca during an extended visit in the area. He can be contacted at amazinghualtulco@gmail.com.

This is no longer a government-run archeological site. Any information you find on Mexican government web pages about opening hours and cost of admission is wrong. The site is now operated as an ecological reserve by an organization that is evidently trying to save jaguars.

To enter the site you now must go with a guide. Guided tours leave on the half hour. The guides do not speak English. (I was lucky to tour with a Mexican tourist who interpreted some of the narrative for me.) The tour is about two hours long. The first 30 to 40 minutes is spent looking at examples of various local handicrafts at the park entrance. The tour through the site stops at the ball court, two temples, and the cliff-top lookout. You cannot go near the archeological sites. There are also several stops to talk about different kinds of animals.

Entry fee is now by donation. The expectation seemed to be that the donation is considerably more than government entrance fee would have been.

I would probably have rated it higher than three stars if knew what the situation was before I went and was prepared for it. It is still interesting, the walk through the forest is beautiful, and the view from the cliff top is stunning. But I visited the site about ten years ago and at that time you paid your entrance fee and you could spend as long as you wanted exploring the well-maintained trails and reading the (bilingual) interpretive signs. So it was disappointing to have to wait and do a guided tour.

The museum and ruins at the Copalita Ecological Park are quite informative about the history of the area in and around Bahias de Huatulco. But the very best part is the "mirador" (view) from the top of the nearby cliffs which is easily and safely reached by a 15-20 minute climb up stairs that have been carved into the hill.

Great place to learn some ocal history and there are lots of paths to explore. English on the signs in the museum buildings would have been a great help.

Copalita is one of the smaller archeological sites in Latin America but is still worth seeing. There is a small museum with explanations in Spanish. The rest of the site is a walk around flagstone or dirt trails. The signs here are in English and Spanish. There are three uncovered structures and the rest of the park is walking along the trails looking at the flora and fauna and spectacular views. We saw coatis, iguanas, bats, turtles, and lots of birds. Almost all the paths are flat except for the one that goes up to the lookout. It costs 80 pesos person to get in. There are friendly guides in the park to explain things but the ones we met spoke only Spanish. The are independent English speaking guides by the front gate that will take you through for a fee.

We found the Copalita to be a relaxing and informative afternoon. While we have enough Spanish to read the signs, we hired Mario as our English speaking guide. His insights and good spirits were worth it. It is a mixture of museum with interesting artifacts, historical ruins, wildlife, a bit of botany, and a short hike with great views.

Worthwhile stop if you are interested in the history of the area and culture.Make sure you have a knowledgeable tour guide to get the full value of the richness of the area. We had Tomas from Amazing Huatulco and he shared so much. He was especially helpful in the museum since all the displays are in Spanish. Plan on walking around and be prepared for the heat; bring water. Don’t forget your camera their are some excellent views.

We have been to Copalita twice, once the year it opened and recently. It is very gradually uncovering the history of the indigenous people of this area. The site must have been splendid at its height and the exposed pyramids give you a glimpse. Some artefacts are on display here but the more important ones have been shipped to the museum in Mexico City. To get the most out of your visit, I would recommend that you hire a guide at the site - the cost is reasonable. The site is smallish, don’t expect Chichen Itza.
