I had a great afternoon with Juan. What I liked about this tour is that on top of the food, there is also a pretty thorough tour of downtown, which incorporates a lot of history wihtout being a history lesson. I especilly enjoyed the stops for birria and the most delicious/sinister flautas.

My wife and I travelled to Guadalajara in July 2019. She has been there before...me, first time. However, I had been to Puerto Vallarta and fell in love with Jalisco style Mexican food.

But enough about us...This tour is amazing! Paul, like everyone says is AWESOME.
This tour is more than just the food. Don’t get me wrong, this tour could stand on its own with just the food. But Paul showed us around, gave us a history and culture lesson, and also advice on where to go eat/drink. I don’t wanna give away the places we ate, but suffice it to say, I’m not sure we would’ve ate at the places he took us to without the tour.
Birria, fish taco, flauta (look it up if you don’t know) garrafa (again look it up), torta, and sandwich. Too much food! More importantly, too much fun!

My wife and I notice that most of the reviews on this site are in English. I’m not sure TA and Yelp translate down here in Mexico. So suffice it to say, you can take this tour in English or Spanish. He offered both, but me still trying to learn Spanish, chose the English version. So, it was super easy for me to enjoy the tour and understand everything.

Honestly, we had a great time, and for those who took the time to read my entire review, I hope you book this tour, are lucky enough to get Paul as your guide, and enjoy your day as much as we did.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Y buen provecho.

We had a fantastic morning walking and food tasting with our guide, Paul. We highly recommend this tour which was really informative but fun. As a result, we would happily eat birria at any time of the day!

Paul took us on a tastey tour of Guadalajara beginning with “birria” and hand-made tortillas that were savory and delicious. This was followed by fish and shrimp tacos at a popular street taqueria. Rotisserie chicken Flautas followed...and we were stuffed! (Even though we’d arrived hungry). We moved on to delicious ices and ice creams, ending with a chocolate shop with chocolate to “die” for! It was quite an interesting culinary tour.
We also enjoyed Paul’s informative commentary on history, architecture and other points of interest along the way. We’ve been to Guadalajara many times, but discovered great new places to share with friends on future trips!

You will not be disappointed. I took a food walking tour in downtown Guadalajara which was much more than just another food tour. Paul was an excellent guide and his knowledge of Guadalajara was most impressive. The restaurants selected had top quality tastings. To my delight, I again encountered Paul a few days later when I signed on for a good tour in Tlaquepaque. He knew this city's history very well and again took me to wonderful tastings. I especially enjoyed the food at Zaguan Restaurant and Gallery - inventive and delicious choices of both food and drinks.

This review is specific to the Tlaquepaque Food & Art Tour - overall brilliant! Paul was an outstanding tour guide - personable and knowledgeable! We took the tour in 2017 (apologies for the delayed review) and are currently planning a return trip to Guadalajara and feel a follow up food tour with Pitaya is a "must do" on our itinerary.

The foodie experiences we had were exceptional and ranged from the local market to nouveau cuisine. Paul specifically focused on locally owned establishments which were diverse and represented regional cuisine. Our knowledge increased about not only the food and beverage culture of the region, bur also the history that cultivated its development.

Arrive hungry to engage fully in the experience. Without a doubt, the food and beverages offered on the "tastings" was bountiful. We absolutely did not need a subsequent meal that day.

We appreciated the cultural and historical "intermissions" of sorts (to the food) as the local arts culture is thriving and the history is intriguing. Food, culture and history are clearly interwoven and I/we look forward to a follow-up tour with Pitaya next month!

A great afternoon with Paul, starting in nueve esquina neighbourhood, then several local favourites in the centro historico, moving on to the university area, and finally ending up at an awesome local microbrewery. Above and beyond the typical tour, highly recommended.

I'm so glad scrolled a little further down the list of Guadalajara tours and found this gem. Though currently listed lower on the "x out of #" tours in guadalajara, you'll notice all the previous reviews are 5/5, and I think they just remain a less reviewed gem because they are newer and not once did they encourage or ask us of for a review during our interactions with them. It was really refreshing to take work with a tourist business that didn't try to use us to further promote them. That being said, we had an amazing experience, so I'm going to do it anyway. :)

We were lucky enough to have Paul as our guide, in a small group. It was more like meeting our foodie friend who lived in Guadalajara and was showing us around, rather than going on a formal tour. From the start the company was great with organizing things for us, and really pays attention to any dietary restrictions or preferences you may have. Paul mentioned he has even done a vegan tour in Mexico (which I find impressive given the prevalence of meat products in the culture). The tour itself was a fantastic combination of food, history, the local area and ducking into small places we never would have found on our own. Even the flow of the food was well-thought out such that we had some light options in middle, never feeling too full, but leaving the tour completely satisfied. I also appreciated the small little tips on identifying good/fresh vendors, ways of identifying better eateries and conversation we had about the local restaurant culture in the area (from both the customer and owner side of things!). Our food stops ranged from food carts, to market stalls, to a vegetarian restaurant to a restaurant with a trained chef. It was great variety and a taste of everything.

There was a wealth of information on other things in the area and things we could come back to later in out stay, and Paul was willing to talk to us very neutrally about a few of the political things we ran into, so I feel that we go an awesome insight into how different people in the country felt and lived, without ever feeling like we were being fed a particular view. I really feel like we got to know the city outside of the sensationalized stories of many tours and in a way we never could have by guide books (or would have taken us weeks to gradually explore on our own). Bring comfortable shoes though, this tour will keep you active and may include some non-food stops!

Ultimately we left feeling like we got far more than we expected from our tour. At one point Paul said "and we're only half done" and I truly thought he was kidding. My advice is to book a tour early in your stay because there will be places you will want to go back and explore and things you will want to see. If you have the time and a few people, ask about booking a 2-day customized tour going to a few different small towns directly around Guadalajara as well as the city itself. We did a version of this and you won't regret it!

We were visiting Guadalajara for New Years with our friends. We always love going on food and market tours so I contacted Pitaya Food Tours. We were only visiting for a few days so I really wanted to get the most out of our time. The customer service is amazing. I was presented with a full day customized itinerary to what we were interested in seeing in the city. I was so impressed I asked if we could spend both of our days with them to see the most of the city. I was blown away with the creativeness and organization of planning! Prior to our arrival I was trying to get our New Years dinner sorted and the restaurant we were wanting to spend the holiday at was not being responsive. I contacted Pitaya Tours and received a phone call from Paul within the hour asking where we'd like our table to be in the restaurant. I have never had service like this before! On our first day we were greeted at our hotel by Paul and Hector and off we went to the HUGE market! We spent all day going to fantastic hole in the wall spots we NEVER would have found to high end beautiful restaurants with amazing food. Both Paul and Hector are so friendly, informative, personable, and just so so much fun to spend the day with! We had tons of laughs and a number of memories made! Day two we headed for brunch outside of town and to walk along the art galleries and visit some handmade pottery shops. Everything was beautifully planned and organized for us! It really was the highlight of our trip and will be difficult to top! Two days later I received a phone call from Paul asking how our dinner was and new years celebration which I found to be so thoughtful! Thanks so much for making our New Years trip so fun and memorable! We'll definitely be back!

We booked the downtown Guadalajara food tour with Paul at the end of November 2017 and it was a very professional, interesting and engaging tour. Paul, a graduate of the University of Arizona (go Wildcats), conducted a thorough and enjoyable tour. The communication with Pitaya Food Tours was good and Paul met us on time at the Aranzazu Gardens at 9 am. We spent the next five hours learning about history, architecture and food as we walked at a comfortable pace through downtown Guadalajara.

The food was extensive. We tasted Birria, Flautas, Torta Ahogada, Carne en sin sugo, coffee, and chocolate. We were so full after the tour that we did not eat dinner that night. The Birria was a spicy stew made from goat with lots of fresh herbs and salsa - so much better than I had expected. Flauta was made from rotisserie chicken rolled in a tortilla and then deep fried. The version of Torta Ahogada that we tried was a pork sandwich covered or “drowned” in a tomato-based sauce so that the bun soaked up the sauce creating an interesting taste and texture. The carne en sin sugo was meat stewed in its juices which was quite tender and flavourful.

Paul also mixes architecture and history into the tour so that you get a sense for the development of Guadalajara and of Mexico along with an opportunity to visit a number of interesting buildings including churches, the original university library, an art deco theatre and the novel spice market.

This was a very good tour led by an interesting and knowledgeable guide.
