My visit to this gem of a small museum ranks among the most interesting, instructive and moving experiences of my month in San Cristobal de las Casas. It was well worth seeking out the location several blocks from the main plaza. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ADDRESS IS GUADALUPE VICTORIA 38, not Gokomachi 6. There is no sign on the building, only the number "38" and the double wooden doors.
Ranged around a courtyard where Dr. Sergio Castro holds his medical clinic treating indigenous patients, the collection he assembled over decades is both attractively displayed and clearly and succinctly explicated. Some of the textiles are antique; many are exquisite. All are arranged as complete outfits worn by people of various Chiapas villages -- everything from official attire to Carnival costumes and wedding clothes. Beneath every outfit is a sign identifying its traditional purpose, the name of the village, and the main occupations particular to its men and women. For example, I learned that the main industry of Zinacantan is cultivation of flowers. In several of the villages, men as well as women wear floral embroidery. Displayed above the outfits are photos showing their use.
Another room adjacent to the courtyard displays spears, knives and other implements. Yet another contains photos and newspaper clippings.
Taken as a whole, this collection was superior to better-known Na Bolom. One reason was that the focus was on the people whose traditions were presented, rather than on the collector. Another reason was that as I admired this fascinating cultural display, treating myself to two circuits through it, Dr. Sergio Castro continued treating his patients -- with obvious respect as well as with skill and compassion. I never picked up even a whiff of condescension -- not in the arrangement of this fine collection, not in his manner toward his patients.

You don't have to be scholar or textile junkie to enjoy Sergio Castro's Textile Museo. Small but thorough over-view of the important 'traje' / daily clothing and ceremonial outfits of the Highland Mayan culture. Mayan textiles carry the myths, symbols and mystery of the people of Chiapas. Women hold this knowledge and have passed it on through hundreds years of weaving their family's clothing. Sergio can share with you the regions of Chiapas and their differences. Highly recommended!!! And Serigo Castro himself, holds a burn clinic here and is a supporter of Mayan community schools and clean water. You'll learn a LOT in a short time.

Dr Castro has put together an excellent collection of the traditional dress and accessories from Maya villages in Chiapas. He is very knowledgeable about the customs and traditions of the area, and shares his knowledge with visitors. The museum also includes an interesting slide show about village festivals. Dr. Castro devotes most of his time to treating burn victims in poor villages and giving medical treatment to those who couldn’t otherwise afford it. He receives no government funding, so when you visit, if you have access to antibiotics or antibiotic cream or ointment or other medical supplies, bring them to this generous man! This museum is definitely worth a visit! Go!

Sergio Castro is a super interesting doctor who lives in San Cristobal and spends much of his time traveling through the countryside treating indigenous burn patients. In the afternoon, he and his nurse assistant treat patients at his clinic and museo in town. He does not charge any patient for treatment or medicine.
Then, at 5pm (as of January 2019), he opens his clinic and museo to visitors. From 5pm until about 6:30pm, Dr. Castro works with his nurse to treat burn patients while also giving Spanish and English language tours of his textile collection. His collection, reflecting gifts from grateful patients, spans up to 50 years and represents every major indigenous group in Chiapas. There is no fee to visit the museo but visitors can help support Dr. Casto's work by placing money in a donation box.

This place is a must see. You'll learn more about indigenous cultures of the area here than anywhere else.
There's examples of clothing and artefacts from all the regions and all have stories and explanations to go with them - delivered by Sergio Castro himself.

Es interesante y muy recomendable para aquellos interesados en los textiles y bordados a mano además de la habilidad de las artesanas para plasmar en formas y dibujos lo que define su etnia y pueblo.
Es además una visita corta en un lugar muy bonito.

I don't have any professional interest in textiles or regional costumes for that matter, but found this place fascinating. If/when I return, I would hire a guide
