Previous reviewers nailed it. The walkers on this path are stupid. They don’t look up; they congregate on the path and they walk as if they own the place.
There are certain areas to be wary. Near the Temptations resort, people gather on the mid morning waiting for their boat rides.
I fell off once trying to avoid a pedestrian down near the Riu hotels. They don’t heed the bells.
With all of that said, this is a wonderful resource and it is being lengthened now coming around to the entrance to Puerto Cancun. That section is much less congested. Also, congestion is much less after km 12 or so. The path goes for about 25 kilometers.

so, first off, I have a LOT of decades of bike experience, including commuting year round in Edmonton, Alberta [look it up if you don't know about the snow and significant sub-zero temperatures - I probably never rode below minus 20]- I don't know if I was the ONLY cyclist ever to be stopped at a 'CheckStop' [looking for drunk drivers] with the RCMP on a New Year's Day morning but I was almost certainly one of the few...
secondly, we live here [its much warmer in January!!] - we have ridden the ZH 3 or 4 times in the past year or so [further this time than ever - we had a sudden 'Bloomin' Onion' from the Outback craving [it was way past lunch and we hadn't eaten - and somehow a litre of draught beer, and food that we wouldn't normally touch, seemed like a good idea]
after the first couple of rides [some months ago during 'high season'] we had decided not to bother coming to the Zona Hotelara again - way, way too many people walking on the bike path!! - so we have been going over to Isla Mujeres, or riding more locally [into a great, well maintained and nearly deserted dedicated bike path] from where we live in Puerto Juarez
Sunday last we changed our minds and went back to the ZH - far fewer people on the path than before, but more than enough!! and, sorry, STUPID!! - after lots of bell ringing, and shouting 'ojos' [local warning, literally 'eyes' = 'heads up / watch out'] / 'passing on your left'], followed by emergency braking for a family of four adolescent kids and their parents, in response to the mother's question, 'why are you riding here?', I responded 'because this is the bike path, and over there, where my partner took evasive action and went around us, is the sidewalk, and I am pretty certain that it is ILLEGAL FOR US to be riding there' [to their [the family's] credit they immediately moved to the sidewalk]
it was very congested closer to Coco Bongo and so forth, so we moved to the sidewalk on the other side of the road [probably illegal as I said, but far fewer people] to get up to the Outback
coming back after lunch, well out of the 'congested area', a young blonde female person just stood in the centre of the available space by a bus stop, ?looking at me approaching, or not, maybe she saw nothing! really hard to tell!! - that was certainly the look on her face - [at speed, on a bike, over 6 feet tall, brightly coloured, ringing bell, and shouting warning] - when I had come to a complete stop instead of hitting her I said, ' so sorry, we're just trying to ride on this bike path that you are standing in the middle of..'
so, yes it is pretty - most of it, as far as it goes, BUT as my partner pointed out in defense of all the 'stupids' on the path there is ABSOLUTELY NO SIGNAGE indicating the difference between the side walk and the bike path
sightly off topic, a new ciclopista has been built through Puerto Juarez [where we live] to Punta Sam - it is very dangerous with trees, posts, cables, holes, unforeseen lumps and bumps, random rubbish, cuts in the pavement, signs and branches crossing at chest height, and, especially on the weekends, many parked cars at event sites forcing one off into oncoming traffic if trying to use the 'designated ' path - so we ride on the road to get to the rather beautiful and fully dedicated path I mentioned earlier...survival of the smartest??
