Excellent free walking tour. We had couples from Belgium, France, the UK and Germany on the tour with us.
The guide, Victor, was a great guy. He explained a lot about Mérida's history, which was fascinating. You can see elements of Mayan pyramid blocks that were "recycled" and used by the early Spaniards to build churches.
We got a lot of tips on where to go in Mérida to learn more. I highly recommend it.

The tourist office organises free guided tours. We did the evening tour of 6.30pm of Paseo de Montejo. The visit lasts one hour and 30 minutes and traces the history of Mexico starting from the monument to the homeland in Paseo del Montejo and then moving on to the beautiful colonial houses overlooking the avenue. Our Guide Guadalupe is very good and very prepared. The visit was interesting and really pleasant. Highly Recommendation!

Went to info centre to take English tour. Upon arrival we signed in, were welcomed and taken to the guide who had already started. They are prompt, 9:30 am. The tour was about an hour and was informative. Walked at a leisurely pace about 3 or 4 blocks. Guide spoke excellent English. Free tour! Guide certainly deserved his tip.

Wendy in the tourist info centre was super helpful with our question and she was proactive and willing to help us.
She made our day and made the great start of our adventure to Uxmal.

The tourism office has lots of information and the staff speak English. They also have free walking tours.
We did the free 9.30 am walking tour of Merida. It is actually a tour of the Gran Plaza with all the buildings surrounding it and history of Merida explained. It was conducted in Spanish and English so there is a fair bit of standing around but there is plenty of tree shade. The guide Victor was really informative - well worth tipping. It lasted 1 hr 15 min.
It started from the tourism office and we had to register so went a bit early. There were about 20 people on it.

We received our free map and advice on how to get to Sisal and Progreso. Very helpful and welcoming. Be sure to stop by on your visit to Merida.

В этом историческом особняке расположен туристический офис. Две молодые девушки охотно рассказывают об интересных местах города, дают туристические буклеты и карты. Знание английского несколько хромает. Но в целом есть понимание. Поначалу нас приняли за итальянцев. Узнав, что мы русские, бурно и эмоционально объяснились в любви стране России. Было приятно.

The Merida Tourism Office is located on the ground floor of the pretty pinkish building which is the Municipal Office/Town Hall, opposite the Grande Plaza in centro Merida. If you need help to navigate the city, suggestions on what to see and help with tours, this can all be done there. The staff in the office speak very good English and are friendly, informative and very helpful. We used their services twice while in Merida; once to make arrangements for the free walking tour that is provided out of their office (show up 15 minutes or so prior to start time in the am to sign up (write your names down on a clipboard/how many people) to ensure a spot. Tours usually run every day, except Sundays and start at 9am. The other was to ask if there was a washroom available for use, not located in a restaurant - they directed me next door to the Olimpo Cultural Centre - I just asked the security guards if I could use the bano and they had no problem with me entering and using the facilities on the ground floor (small stalls, but clean) - this place houses a planetarium, art exhibits and film showings. Back to the free walking tour; our guide spoke in both Spanish and English and our group was about 15 people. I would recommend this tour, as it gives you the historical context of the Grande Plaza of Merida and the main buildings located around the plaza. We learned that prior to the Montejo conquistadores arrival, the Mayan city of T'ho was here, meaning city of 5 hills - our guide spoke about the 5 pyramids that used to exist on the site, which were taken apart. block by block, to build the Cathedral and all the buildings around the square by the Spanish. He even pointed out on one of the churches, some of the ancient Mayan stones that were not turned inward to hide the "pagan" carvings and symbols. Fascinating for lovers of ancient history. He also took us inside the Governor's Palace (the large green building) and it is beautiful inside the courtyard - he let us know that although the 2 security guards are standing in front of the entrance, it is open and free to walk in and see the artwork upstairs; a great tip because the guards look a bit intimidating and without knowing, many people just walk on by and do not enter. This tour definitely helped us understand the layout of the centro area and we made mental notes to come back later on at our leisure to check out the buildings in more detail. You can leave the tour anytime. But it is nice to stay and learn and then tip the guide for his efforts; as others have said, they are too polite to ask, but offering is a nice way of saying thank-you and is appreciated.
Also, do not miss seeing the Vaqueria dancing on Monday night outside the Municipal Office building. The women's costumes are gorgeous and the distinctive Yucatan dances are amazing to watch! Really impressive and they perform so many different dances - with baskets, scarves, trays of drinks, pole weaving, the men on boxes, etc. Definitely go early to have a chance at a seat - we showed up 30 minutes early and all seats were taken so we had to sit on the fence rail of the park. If you miss it, there is a smaller stage set up in Santa Lucia park where they perform a shorter set of dances, and also other performers sing/play guitars - we went to that free show as well and sat on the bleachers - again go about 45 minutes prior to have a chance to sit down - if I recall correctly, that show is on Thursday evenings, 9pm - the restaurants surrounding the park fill up and the whole ambiance with the lights is rather magical! Loved all the free events offered in Merida (including the Pok ta Pok Mayan ball game in front of the Cathedral on Saturday nights). Check it out!

Avons séjourné 3 jours à Mérida. Impossible d'obtenir de l'information à ce bureau: les heures d'ouverture ne sont pas affichées ! Nous nous sommes heurtés à une porte fermée 2 fois sur 2 !

We did the free walking tour in Merida, our guide Ivan was super informative and gave us some excellent recommendations for restaurants, cantinas and hidden gems! His English was perfect and we really enjoyed learning about the history of the city of Merida - thank you Ivan!

Hello!
I would like to know if you enter to the City hall, Montejo's house, Government Palace, Saint Ildephone Cathedral, and the City Museum as part of the tour or if you just pass by walking. Thanks in advance.

While I am sure there are commercial tours most of the attractions are withing walking distance of the central square. I think there is an audio tour you can check out from the City Turismo office. I like to take my own time visiting the Palacio de Montejo.
