Went to the Scottish owl centre in Whitburn and it was amazing seeing all the different types of owl and the flying display was

Allow at least an hour to look into all the cages. The owls are kept either singly or in couples. The camouflage of some of the birds is so good that it can take a few moments to spot some of them! Also, when we visited, in April, some of the birds were in their nest boxes incubating eggs. The highlight of our visit was the the flying display. Nicola, the head keeper, presented our session which lasted for about 50 minutes and featured 3 contrasting owls. The presentation was outstanding: very informative and informed by a passion for the owls and their conservation and a deep concern for the environment more generally and what we can all do to mitigate human impacts . Nicola moved about the space constantly enticing the birds from one feeding post to another. At times the birds flew low over our heads which was exciting. The experience is also great value.

We literally had a hoot of a time at the centre. Staff were knowledgeable, and friendly.
We were impressed with the varied range of owls. Set up was mainly flat, benches available, and flying events. I struggle with mobility, and I managed to see everything with a few rests.
We took a picnic lunch.
Would recommend, and value for money!

This is the largest collection of owls in the World, with around 150 making up this parliament. They come in all shapes and sizes - our favourite was the very large owl at the very beginning. The daily display at 12:30 is excellent with a highly informative talk and three owls demonstrating their flying skills.

We visited the centre with a gentleman we support. The site is wheelchair friendly mostly with some gravel areas but easy enough to get around. Staff were lovely and informative. Entry price reasonable (carers go free). We enjoyed walking around seeing the different varieties of owls. We also saw the flyng show which was brilliant for all ages. The girl (purple hair) was fantastic and gave loads of information on the 2 owls she was showcasing, and she had them flying around the arena lots of times. Well worth the effort to get there. Highly recommended.

We took our three grand daughters for a day out to see the Owls and they had a great time. out 9 year old loved seeing the different breed and loved the flying displays, while for the 6 year old there was a nice mix of owls but also play activities which kept her busy. The one year old was happy just walking about and seeing the birds. Staff were knowledgeable, and helpful.

Great day out, huge selection of owls and good value for money. The flight show with Trystan the keeper was great and he was really friendly and knowledgable. Got a photo with Lulu the white faced owl to top it off

Is this a full day out or would it only take a couple of hours to go round the centre?

Could be either. Can get round in a few hours of you don't read everything or there's a cafe and activities for kids if you want to make a day out of it.

Can I take a camera to photograph the birds?
Yes, it is possible to take photographs. However, I would recommend (and I am not sure if they would not even require it) that you turn off the flash - after all, these birds have very sensitive eyesight. The flying display area is under cover, so available light there is not the best. I turned the speed to 3200 ASA.
Regarding the owls in their pens, it is possible to skip the mesh by getting really close to it. But please be careful - after all, they are wild animals, not domesticized ones.
