Ths Kurth Kiln Regional Park was unknown and quite a large area but fairly average Australian bushland . Although there were numerous signs along the road I failed to find the falls or the historic area and left a little underwhelmed.

Nice stopover historic spot to see some European history. Good interpretive signs explaining the significance of the kiln and the adjoining caretakers residence. The waterwheel is overgrown and quite difficult to see. There wasn't water coming through the pipe when we were there so the wheel wasn't turning - not sure whether this is because the pipe was "turned off" or the flow was too low.

Good picnic area to the immediate east, with parking areas. If approaching from the west, pass the caretakers cottage and kiln site by about 50 metres and you'll see the parking on the left.

There's a manmade pond/dam across the road from the caretakers cottage.

The access road is unsealed but suitable for 2WD.

What an incredible Regional Park! It's really stunning... so initially I headed to the Gilwell track and stopped and went for a walk... the walking paths were wide and easily to traverse. The fauna here is stunning... small things capture your attention like an unusual banksia species, shiny leaves on plants, fungi ... and the smell of the bush is so captivating. After walking here for a little while ( trust me when I say this is somewhere you could easily walk for a few hours) I moved on to another part of the park.

I drove down Soldiers Road until I arrived at the kiln. I found parking quite easy even though the park had quite a few cars. There are some really stunning camping areas that you drive past to get to the kiln.

Dr Ernest Edgar Kurth from the University of Tasmania was commissioned to design the kiln with the aim of mass-producing charcoal as an alternative fuel in the response to war-time petrol rationing in 1941. The kiln commenced operation in March 1942 but transport difficulties combined with an oversupply of charcoal from private operators meant the kiln was used only intermittently during 1943 and was shut down soon after. Over the period of its operation, Kurth Kiln produced only 471 tons of charcoal which represented a tiny fraction of Victoria’s total production.

Gembrook was selected as the ideal site for the Kurth Kiln because it fully met three essential criteria required for successful operation;

*Water - the kiln required 2000 gallons (9,100 litres) of water per day in order for its cooling systems to be effective.
*Wood - the kiln burnt about 100 cubic metres of wood per week.
*Gradient - sloping land enabled easier top loading of wood into the kiln.

The park has several plant communities ranging from Mountain Ash forest and riparian forest to shrubby foothill forest and swamp heathland. The diversity of plant life attracts a range of wildlife including Wombats, Swamp Wallabies and Echidnas.Active mostly at night are Possums, Yellow-bellied Gliders, Sugar Gliders and Greater Gliders that glide for up to 100 metres from tree to tree. Also lookout for Lyrebirds, Honeyeaters, Parrots, Kookaburras, Yellowtailed Black Cockatoos, Currawongs and Butcherbirds.

This is an amazing park... well worth visiting.

An ideal location for those that want peace and quiet. The road into this place in need of repair but worth it as the place is so peaceful. The birds were singing the cicadas made the place sound like the bush was happy that it was finally raining. Very cool place when it is hot in the city. Found the amenities a bit outdated but the lack of running water made it difficult unless you decide to use the stream which flowed through the place instead. Experienced hikers only for the trails with appropriate footwear as tracks are very narrow and slippery. Well worth the visit came home refreshed.

Spent a pleasant Sunday at Kurth Kiln. The dam is a nice place to have a picnic where there is a single table. there are more tables near the toilets and day car park. The kiln is ok and provides an interesting view in to life during the war. There are shacks above the kiln - nice but nothing spectacular. There is a rambling camping area which was surprising busy. Looks like a nice place to spend a night or two (thou I may do it during the week rather than the weekend). There are a number of walks in the immediate area which are good.

Lovely campground not too far from Melbourne. Sites have plenty of space, drop toilet was well kept, nice 30 min walking track down the back along a creek, and not too far to drive to walks through the Redwood Forest or to La La Falls and other attractions in and around the Yarra Ranges.
