Ok. I’ll try to be objective in spite of my failed diving weekend.
Dogs. Yes, they are guardian dogs. They will defend their territory and will bark to any stranger passing by. Use common sense and do not throw stones or sticks to them. Try to ignore them or give them a small treat once in a while. After a couple of days they will be friendly to you.
The hosts. Kris and Hege are lovely people. Parents to a newborn baby. They will make you feel like a visiting old friend and love talking over dinner. Very responsive to the phone, SMS and email. If there is a problem, they will try to help you solve it. I wasn’t able to catch the 8am bus, so I arrived late, at 7:30 pm. They tried to arrange boat transportation from mainland to the port but do not count 100% on it. It it is an island, with island times and things are taken on a more relaxed way. In the end, I had to arrange my own transportation an Kris walked all the way down where the boat dropped me off to guide me to their place. Nice detail!
Accommodation. Don’t expect luxuries and if you are afraid of bugs, think twice. I have travelled to remote and rural areas and that’s what you get: a shack made out of wood, a bunk with a decent mattress, a mosquito net, a chemical toilet (9/10 in cleanliness) and running water from a dwell for hand washing and showers (no heather). The only luxuries: electricity, a fan, and the amazing sound of the ocean and the bugs.
Enough of the house in the prairie. I came to Octopuses Garden because they promote themselves as an alternative and less crowded diving spot to Koh Rong. In fact, I was the only guest that weekend. I arrived on Friday night and left on Sunday afternoon. So I let the Dive Master (Kris) know that I had available all Saturday and Sunday morning so he could plan the dives. In the end I could not go diving. The captain (Kris) considered that the weather conditions were not ideal neither Saturday nor Sunday. For me it was a waste of time (opportunity cost) to travel all the way from Phnom Penh and not have logged a single dive.
It has been my fault for not discussing in advance with the Master Diver which were the minimum conditions, so I will eat my disappointment well seasoned with Khmer spices. One piece of advice: if the weather looks like my forecast, that is 21km/h (11knots) winds, 0.9m waves and 0.3m swell, do not waste your time coming to this spot for a dive. It will not happen.
Ok, if you would like to get lost yourself for two days, stay barely connected to the outer world (bc mobile internet connection is bad), and find the beauty in a morning or afternoon stroll in a small Cambodian island packed with standard concrete houses, with no sandy beaches (beach is full of plastic, houses or rocks), then this might be your place.
Whining time: I endured the discomfort just for the diving experience which I didn’t get. I would rather spend that time in a resort maybe in Koh Rong. I literally was sitting on a table or laying on a bunk, waiting for the Captain and Master Diver to give me a green light. In the end the Dive Master said it was related to expected poor visibility because the whole area is not deep and gets easily murky, and “many things that he was considering in his head”(wtaf?!) In other parts of the World I have dived in worst conditions and I could barely feel it at 20m depth. Apparently Cambodian dive spots are quite sensitive to the weather on the surface. ot “dive” but “diva”.
Now, on a personal level, if you want to support Kris’, Hege’s and the newborn baby’s project, come and spend one weekend or one week with this family. They would really appreciate your choosing them and helping with the post-COVID19 tourism reactivation.

We stayed with Kris and Hege for three nights in their amazing cabin on stilts on the water. We were planning to go to Condor Reef, but unfortunately we came in the rainy season and the sea was too rough to make the 2.5h boat ride out to the reef. Luckily we still decided to do the local dives, and they did not disappoint in the least. The amount of sea life in the waters surrounding the cabin is just incredible. We loved every minute of our four dives through thick coral swarming with fusilier, trevally, coral trout, cardinal fish, and all kinds of grouper. We also saw a massive African Pompano.
Kris and Hege clearly know what they're doing, and we felt very welcome in their home. They make the best food, and are always up for an interesting conversation over dinner or a beer. They know the dive sites like the back of their hand, and our dive guide Hege made us feel safe even when we ventured into strong currents and low visibility.
The guard dogs did of course bark at us when we arrived, but we waited until Hege came out and when the dogs saw we were guests they just cuddled up to us and treated us like old friends.
We're looking forward to coming back here and we highly recommend this trip to everyone!

Just got back from my 3 month travel in south east asia, and my stay at Octopuses Garden was a great part of my trip. I went to Octopuses on this small fisherman island to do my PADI, something I wanted to do for a long time. Its 4 long days with so much new stuff to learn to dive. Diving was so cool, a bit scary at first, the mask thing was not my favorite part of the training, (thanks for being patient guys) But being looked after by Chris, Hege, Lilly and Lin made it easy in the end. Flying weightless over the corals are the best feeling ever and there was sooo much fish!! And I saw a seahorse for the first time!!
The evening snuggles with their dogs Pipi,Black and Bule made me really homesick, missing my dog. Home cooked food and the family dinners are so nice and they made me feel like home! I had my first real pizza in ages and proper mashed potatoes and cheese!
I will be back when I'm ready for my advanced PADI, and then I want to go to Condor!

Beautiful place but appalling staff. They come with unnecessary comments regarding our diving and obviously thought they were the best in everything. swoop very much with the safety procedures before diving.

Dear Emmma.
Thank you for telling us our place is beautiful, and I’m so sorry to hear you are not happy with your experience.
When fresh divers such as you and your friend come to us, we want to do what we can to make sure you will have the best experience under water.
That also sometimes includes reinforcing what you have learned, and reminding you about some things allready almost forgotten. All so you will stay safe and happy. Swimming techniques and buddy check might be a part of this so your air consumption slows down, and you can enjoy more time under water and see the whole dive site..
We do never ever swoop or forget the safety check. Safety is a big part of diving. And we showed you the most effective way of doing the buddy check, the BWRAF, as you learned on your Open Water Course (not the WAFBBAFW) to avoid overheating with lots of gear in the Cambodian sun.
As most experienced divers and instructors, we really like new divers joining our sport, and we want to share knowledge and stories to keep divers safe and happy.
We wish you a happy divers life, with loads of exiting underwater adventures. and we hope you will continue to meet other people within the underwater community, that wants to share and spread knowledge and fun with fresh divers.

I did two dives with Kris at Condor Reef which is 35 km out in the ocean. I wanted to go there for seven year but there were no operators. It is not cheap but it is worth it. A dive site which does not look like a dive site in Asia. I will go back there and dive Shark Island as well.

We wanted to go diving with them for a couple of days to one week. When we took the path to the place, their 2 dogs were approaching us and barging to us in a very aggressive way. They were almost attacking us. Walking back did not help. One of the owners tried to calm then down, but blamed us of making them more aggressive (by looking at them for example). It is bizarre how aggressive the dogs are (we heard this also from the neighbours). We did nothing to them and we were very afraid. We did not throw stones like locals do. On top of that, the male owner came to us and said: "if you can't handle the dogs you are not welcome here". This made us turning back sad, as we really looked forward to diving there. However later we heard that people did not feel comfortable and did not feel safe diving with them, so be warned if you go here!

Dear JV
I'm so sorry you had a bad experience with our dogs. They are normally very friendly creatures, but something must have scared them. True, you did not have a rock, but to be honest your behaviour when you approached us, even startled me. I could clearly see you were not comfortable around dogs, and tried to give you some friendly advice regarding how to be around dogs in Cambodia. I’m sad to hear you misunderstood. I did not blame you for making my dogs aggressive by looking at them. Our neighbors do not speak English, and the woman you spoke to before you came is my best friend here on the island, so I do not know where you have your information from.
It is also sad, that you review us with one star, based on the very general “people said” and you did not even come out to our pier and diving center. Even thou I invited you over for a refreshment and a new start.
Please let “people” talk for themselves and read our other 5 star reviews.
If you had come diving with us, you would have seen we put safety first.
Welcome back another time

I went to Octopuses Garden to become a PADI Divemaster in March 2016 and I'm soooooo glad I did! It's the most intimate divecenter I've ever seen and it comes with an incredibly family-like feeling, responsible for this is Hege and Kristoffer of course! They are down to earth, casual and tons of fun! Although when it's time to learn about diving they're extremely thorough and they make sure everyone is on the same page at all times. I have nothing but good memories from Koh Sdach and it was truly a special experience. Dive-centers like Octopuses Garden don't just appear in front of you, so if you're lucky enough to have found this review you shouldn't miss out on this opportunity! I regard Hege and Kristoffer as close friends and I'm so thankful that I was lucky enough to stumble across their little paradise. On top of everything, Koh Sdach is a beautiful place where I really got to see Cambodia up-close, definetely a peek into a small culture untouched by tourism and corporations.

I enjoyed my stay at Octopuses Garden, everyone makes you feel welcome and it's a scenic getaway from life in Phnom Penh. Hege was a great diving instructor, firm at times but that helps reinforce what you learn. She's very knowledgeable and is rigorous in the way she teaches, to ensure that we learn and implement safe diving practices. She's a really good teacher. The course was intense and tiring but also interesting and enjoyable. We saw some beautiful fish and coral, ate well and slept really well! I'm glad I learnt to dive there. Highly recommend Octopuses Garden to others who want to get PADI certified. Thanks to Hege, Chris, Alex and Steve for looking after us so well!

Hi. Just wanted to ask how deep the dive sites are en general? We have open water Padi ticket and enjoy a slight deeper dive than we experienced at koh rong 4-9 meters. And the visibility en general? Hope you will write back. Cheers Fine
