Had a great day yesterday on the market tour and cooking class with Tony. He was very knowledgeable about local ingredients, traditions, customs etc. The class was fun and learned to cook some great food. Interesting techniques too. Would definitely recommend to anyone with an interest in oaxacan food culture.

My husband and I had a great experience with Tony. He is such a great character and definitely knows all about Mexican cooking! From the cantina breakfast in the morning to the market tour and ultimately the cooking class and absolute FEAST we shared with the group in the end, you will learn and see a lot and have fun doing so. Highly recommended!

My partner and I took a great market tour one morning in Puerto Escondido with Tony. He was very open and easy to talk to and had relationships with many vendors in the market. In addition to the tour, we had the opportunity to enjoy breakfast together at a local cafe. Tony's covid precautions and communication made us feel comfortable spending time with him despite the pandemic. Highly recommend taking a tour or class with Tony for a view outside the tourist bubble in Puerto Escondido!

We wife and I decided on the salsa class (you make six in total) instead of the longer cooking class and we were not disappointed. Tony (and Ruby who helps out) were amazing! Tony's knowledge is deep and his stories endless. Each salsa came with an ingredient and history lesson. Loved learning about the different chilis and how various preparations effect the final product (traditional molcajete v blender; comal v boil).

Tony served a HUGE meal along side the final product (about 3 in the afternoon so you will NOT be hungry that evening - don't have dinner plans). Pork carnitas along side guacamole, jícama orange salad, tostadas & tortillas, nopales, black beans, and Mexican red rice. We also had unlimited aqua fresca and beer and mezcal.

You will not regret taking a break from the sun and beaches to take this class. I also thought it was a good value considering the size of the meal you have at the end (not to mention the quality of the meal).

My partner and I took a group cooking class + market tour. We were really impressed by how knowledgeable Tony is and by his attitude to the clients. I recently became a pescetarian, and I forgot to notify Tony in advance about my diet. Nevertheless, he made sure I was still involved in the class and offered some alternative meatless filling for one of the dishes we prepared (again, it was a group class with a pre-defined menu, not a private lesson, and I notified him when the class started).
Generally, during the class, Tony always made sure everyone was happy and enjoying their time.

I would highly recommend this experience to everyone visiting Puerto Escondido. I'm sure you'll enjoy this class even if you hate cooking! This experience really is so much more than preparing a meal. You'll learn about the chemistry in food, unexpected interactions between different products, hear some unbelievable stories from Tony, and see aesthetically pleasing locations in the Market (you'll want to take your camera with you). And, if you are lucky, you'll meet an iguana chilling on Tony's patio 🦎

My friend and I had a private cooking class with the Mexykan Chef and were blown away by his depth of knowledge both culinary and otherwise not to mention a myriad of information about Mexican food that only someone with many years as a chef living in Mexico can have. Tony is a great teacher and a generous host and at the end of the class we left with full stomachs, a number of delicious recipes which we are looking forward to making at home. It was a wonderful afternoon and we totally recommend taking one of his classes when in Puerto Escondido - you won't be disappointed!

Hola Vivian, thanks so much to you, and your niece for the opportunity. I'm humbled. I would like to say thanks to all of the people here in Mexico that have been so generous sharing their knowledge and experience with me. I really enjoyed the day breaking bread with you all. I hope your trip continues to memorable. Saludos, Tony

I did the private class, which is not cheap, but you sure do get a whole lot of expertise, time, and attention for your money.
We started with breakfast, then extended shopping-with-explanations at one of the main markets in town, then back to the kitchen. We had enough time to make pretty much everything (salsas, salad, ceviche, a life-changing guacamole, agua fresca, and a complex mole) fully from scratch. [He did throw in some beans, tortillas, and a sorbet for dessert.] Lots of detail at each step about what we were doing and what to look for. And there were even some cool parting gifts.
I'm planning to reproduce the whole menu for a crowd when I get back home.

In recent years I have attempted to take a local cooking class during my travels and The Mexykan Cooking Class did not disappoint. My boyfriend and I were the only two in the class which made the experience even more enjoyable. We met Tony in the market and got breakfast then took a tour of the market where Tony would stop often to point out things that were grown and sourced locally, things that were imported, things that we had never seen before with an explanation of how to cook with them and things that had found their way to the region through colonization. We were able to see all things local and get an epic history lesson!

We spent the majority of the class in Tony's kitchen where we drank beers, listened to an amazing spoitfy playlist he curated, cooked and talked. At one point I said out loud "wow I forgot we were in a cooking class" - it just felt like you were hanging out with friends.

We made mole amarillo, ceviche, guacamole, salsa, passionfruit aguafresca, chochoyotes (masa dumplings), xec (jicama citrus salad) and a pickled side dish for the mole. Tony had a lesson for every dish and almost every step. We finished it all with some high octance mezcal, orange slices with a tajin type of garnish and a wonderful gelato type of dessert.

As we left it started to rain, which apparently for Puerto Escondido during that time is completely unusual. It was a wonderful day and would absolutely recommend and do again. Thanks so much Tony!

My friend and I wanted an authentic experience to learn more about the food and the culture and Tony do that and so much more.

The knowledge held in one man's head is impressive enough but the warmth and humour was what truly made for an unforgettable day.

Tony took us to a superb local breakfast (that I revisited as it was that good) before an in-depth look at not just the food of the market but the people and the part it plays in people's lives.

Back at Tony's, we cooked up a storm. The talent to teach while making sure we were involved and learning to replicate in the future - this wasn't simple a tutorial.

The beers, mezcal and chat - from the fascinating to the hilarious - elevated this experience. Tony is never short of intriguing, engrossing and often very funny stories.

I hope Tony is able to make it through this pandemic as he does a lot to put his money back into the community and in the hands of his local assistant who was warm and kind, in particular in sharing her art with us.

We learnt loads and had a great day but I also believe I made a friend. Couldn't encourage people more to seek Tony out of you're lucky enough to be able to.

My friend and I did this while in Puerto Escondido and it was the highlight of our trip. Tony is very knowledgeable in food, history of the area and we really enjoyed the market! His assistant Ruby made the day wonderful and the food was delicious. A day well spent, hope we can come back again and take a class to make all the moles another time.
