Did the back road at the end of August, and yes there are potholes(it's a back road, remember) but super easy drive you could do in a car as long as you take it slow. The trail was well marked and easy to follow with many opportunities to stop and explore the points of interest noted by the signage. I would definitely give yourself more than the 3.5 hours suggested, there is too much to see, I would plan this as a day trip. Pack a lunch and don't forget to gas up before you go!

By travelling from Penticton to Barkervile on Highway 97, part of our journey took us on the Gold Rush Trail. We did all six parts of this historic route: Lillooek to Clinton; Clinton to 100 Mile House; 101 Mile Ranch; Williams Lake; Quesnel; and finally, Barkerville on Highway 26. We were treated to many wonderful sites as we drove along this historic route. Great forests, huge lakes, mighty waterways, historical landmarks, interesting towns, villages and cities greeted us as we progressed towards our destination. We looked for and found several geocaches along the way. We selected caches that would take us to the points of interest along the Gold Rush Trail.

We were told it would take 3.5 hours. And is a lovely scenic drive ..... Well it is senic only to about ghost falls then you can't see a thing. And if you are the driver you are too busy looking at the raid than the scenery. It is very potholed and rough it is a logging road. If you don't have a 4x4 I would not go especially if it has rained!!!!. I would only recommend the stretch from barlerville to maybe ghost falls if you really have to go that far. then go back the road is awful and not recommended. It took us 9 hours in a dually 4x4 NOT the 3.5 hours suggested in the pamphlet. And we only made a couple short stops.... we do backroads all the time I would not do it again. And would not recommend it. DO NOT take trailers or motorhomes down this road. You will regret it. If you love your vehicle don't do it!.

Ghost Lake Falls is about 65 km east of Wells on the Gold Rush Trail. The road is unpaved gravel, complete with potholes. But what spectacular views along the way. A portion of it follows Antler Creek, one of the gold bearing creeks from the 1860s gold rush. And the falls are beautiful. In June they were at their peak of runoff with all the power and beauty you can imagine. Well worth the trip. Only saw 1 black bear along the way. (plus deer and moose)

Drove the back road to Barkerville from Likely. 90% of the road is quite good, about 10% is quite potholed. We were in a 4x4 truck, but it was not needed. Very low vehicles might have a bit of trouble though. Made stops at Quesnel Forks Ghost town, 2 Sisters campsite on Cariboo Lake, Ghost lake falls and Comet Creek Resort/falls.

Very glad we did this drive finally, well worth it. Some amazing views and rugged country back there.

Also got to see a couple black bears and a cow/calf moose feeding in a wetland.

We decided to do the complete Gold Rush Trail (Starting in Lillooeth, finishing in Quesnel) including the old backroads. (Williams Lake - Horsefly - Likely - Barkerville.)

It was a great experience, next to the great roadtrip (over backroads) we learned a lot over the Gold Rush history in this region and over the region itself.

During our roadtrip we visited a few great loactions, e.g. we spend the night in Likely (one of the few remaining goldrush settlements, we visited Barkerville and saw the Ghost Falls underway.)

If driving the original backroads, a little bit of nice weather is very welcome. (Gravel / sand roads.)
Take 2 - 3 days for the complete trip, also because driving the backroads does not go very fast, due to the road conditions and the many spots during the roadtrip.

We had a lot of fun and can recommend this Gold Rush Trail to everybody who want to do something else than only visting National Parks.

Last but not least: do not forget to visit Barkerville, the most well known Gold Rush town during the Cariboo Gold Rush Trail and now a historic site / tourist attraction.

Travelling into the Cariboo for a wedding and extending to drive to Barkerville starting with a stop at Hell's Gate. This highway was easy to drive. The alternate passing lanes were frequent and very well marked. Beautiful vistas and wide open space. Its a long drive but well worth the time. Travelling back to the lower mainland I routed down through Highway 99 via Whistler. Another scenic area. Slower speed limits to drive with caution.

We drove the Gold Rush Trail to and from Barkerville and were impressed by how well maintained it is. Lots to see along the way and lots of places to stop and take a break. Historic signs give even more information along the way.

Den Gold Rush Trail sind wir mit dem Auto von Barkerville nach Likely gefolgt. Eine schöne Straße inmitten von Natur. Leider haben wir nicht viele Tiere gesehen.
