This is a lovely park with great views, old giant trees and lots of walking trails. The main washroom is a disaster. Dirty floors with dirt around the edges that looks like it’s been there for years. Showers filthy (and hairy); paper towels spilled all over. Should be cleaned daily and it looks like it must be annually.

For my husband's birthday, we decided to celebrate by taking a trip down memory lane. We headed over to Newcastle Island near Nanaimo, where he used to go camping with his friends as a kid. Despite living in Cowichan Valley for over 35 years, I had never been there before. We explored the island, enjoyed the stunning views, and strolled along the beach during low tide. We even treated ourselves to some ice cream from the concession stand, where the staff was incredibly friendly. I'm already looking forward to going back for an overnight stay. The ferry ride was quick and easy to book online, but finding parking near the ferry terminal was a bit of a challenge. Despite that, I highly recommend a day trip or even an overnight stay at Newcastle Island.

Let me begin by saying that I take a lot of the blame for how this experience turned out, and I know that. But in the interest of forwarning being forarmed and all, I'll share my experience and hope it is helpful to other:
THE GOOD
-The Deer!! Also the raccoons. DO NOT FEED THEM. DO NOT TRY TO PET THEM. They are still wild animals but they're super cute, pretty mellow and cool to jus watch or get some pictures of.
-The food (if it's open when you're there) is higher priced than one might expect but pretty tasty and a decent selection
The staff are super friendly, not that we interacted with a lot of them
-THE GOOD BATHROOM, if you, like me, dread an outhouse, never fear, there is one beautiful bathroom complete with light, running water and flushing toilets!! ( I think there was also showers but we did not try the showers)
THE BAD
-The lugging of stuff. If you camp in your car you can of course fill your car with everything you might need or want for your time away. On Newcastle this is not the case, you need to be able to carry whatever you're bringing from the parking lot to the ferry, onto the ferry, off the ferry and then to your campsite. (Maybe the staff could assist but they didn't offer and we didn't ask)
-The fire ban was a huge pain in the butt, and since we were lacking in experience we didn't consider the difficult position we'd be in not bringing along a camping stove, when we also wouldn't have access to fire... we ended up cutting our trip short by a couple of days because, among other things, we had no way to cook our food.
-The hours of the restaurant... they were closed most of our trip. If they'd been open we may have just eaten there for every meal and saved ourselves the trouble of trying to prepare food without heat... but they weren't open and we suffered as a result. Check the hours!
-City noise, don't be surprised if you still hear sirens, cars and other noise from nearby Nanaimo. We had the furthest site away and it was still surprisingly loud. Also boat sounds.
THE ISLAND
Like most natural locations, Newcastle Island is beautiful. The beaches are lovely, the trees are lovely, the views are great. Again, the wildlife is delightful. I would maybe suggest it better as a day trip than a camping trip, because it is a worthwhile place to adventure around but you can probably see all there is to see in a day.

3 of us had a pleasant walk around the island. The concession stand was closed but we knew beforehand that it would be. We had to wait for 3 ferries before we got off the island. The wait on the dock was fine since the weather was nice.

Beautiful park.
Worst washrooms I’ve seen in a provincial park.
Captain of the boat hit the dock with force on return trip. Not impressed.

The best part for me was the small ferry boat ride across to Newcastle. Once there you can spend the day discovering the open waterfront or camp overnight in the treed area with full amenities. Bring your camera!

Only a short 10 minute ferry ride from Nanaimo and you are surrounded by nature. Most of the trails are shaded so even on a hot day it is a comfort hike. Along the shore trail there are a few little bays and beach areas where you can cool off and go for a swim. I was lucky enough to see three owls near Mallard Lake.

There’s a well defined trail the perimeter of the island. It’s shady and you often don’t see through the thicket of trees. You have to pre-buy your ticket for an assigned river taxi to take you to the island.
Who knew you could camp here? People parked their cars and brought on board the taxi their camping gear. This is tent camping and it looked like there were amenities for larger groups.
It’s not a difficult hike. It’s not even the most interesting. But it was a beautiful day on a Sunday where many other stores and places to visit are closed because of Sabbatb day observance or CoVid. It took us about 90 minutes and we didn’t have special

Is there an easy walk or transport for foot passengers from departure bay to the ferry to Newcastle?
撰写日期:2020年7月15日
Since it is an island, it would be best to locate secure parking at someone's home and then get a ride down to the ferry dock.

Yes! You can call Jeff! He rents Kayaks and Bicycles! Good prices and extremely good service. Located in Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park Campground. Google Newcastle Island kayak and bike rental for phone number, or show up and look for the bikes and kayaks.

Yes, there are several good beaches for swimming, one near the ferry dock with expansive lawns leading down to it as well as a children’s playground. Further around the island is Kanaka Bay which is a little more private and also has great swimming, particularly when the tide has come up over the warm sand.

Is there drinking water now (mid March) on the island? I’m concerned they shut off the tap during winter.

Yes! They have a sign as you get off the boat saying dogs must be leashed but we saw a few dogs enjoying a dip in the water and hiking with their owners off leash once you get away from the launching area. There has been a dog on the ferry every time we have gone.

Hmmm, I'm sure there is a rental place close to the little ferry in the maraina somewhere, I see people kayaking all the time, but I'm not sure. We actually have joined a women's kayaking class to Newcastle Is. with Albernie Outpost, Nanaimo, they bring their kayaks when you register with them for set dates/times and give great instruction. Maybe give them a call and see what they suggest?
