Definitly impressed me with these public bathrooms. From the point of view of someone who is two weeks away from giving birth, walking downtown- and regularly needing to use the wasroom- I was pleasantly surprised at this washrooms cleanliness. They even have separate hot and cold running water- THAT WORK. The washroom is 100 years old this year- and out to be celebrated as s dignified place to regroup, freshen up, and trust public spaces. Thank you!

Our current trip to Chinatown brought us down Hastings and a stop at Victory Square. It is badly in need of some TLC and community outreach services. But the cenotaph is the main draw this day (for us). The inscription challenged us: it is an inscription lifting lines from Lamentations, chapter 1, verse 12:
"Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look around and see. Is any suffering like my suffering that was inflicted on me, that the LORD brought on me in the day of his fierce anger?"
Words to ponder, chew on, but very hard to digest. This 1924 tribute to brave WW I soldiers asks this hard question of all who bother to stand and read (and hopefully reflect).
In 1935 unemployed labor camp men gathered in the thousands to protest and demonstrate. They wanted financial assistance. The mayor read "The Riot Act" (a 1715 law forbidding gatherings of 12 or more) as fair warning before an hour passed and then force would be used to disburse the crowds.
In case anyone is wondering, the law was repealed in 1973 but other laws enacted so, net effect is probably nil. A plaque is affixed to a neighboring building commemorating the reading of the act.
The Riot Act has, today, fallen into use (and idiom) as a stern warning or reprimand. I'll think about it the next time I invoke it!
That walk down Hastings from Victory Square (into the EastVan neighborhood) isn't something I'd like to repeat anytime soon (or ever). It was difficult not to trip over bodies and drug paraphernalia on the sidewalk.

This important memorial continues to suffer from lack of TLC by the City. After walking the surrounding areas, it is becoming clear to me that the "vulnerable" from the Downtown East-side (DTES) neighbourhood are being pushed south and west by gentrification in their original neighbourhood. Yes, this location was grubby last year and the year before, but there seems to be even more loitering than previous, even on a very hot day when we all should be seeking shade. So, I renew my call to the City: you cleaned it up for 11 November when the Minister of Defense was here, can't you keep it that way? Our veterans deserve better. And to our out-of-town friends, my apologies; I suggest you don't come by after dark.

Malgré la bonne intention de rendre hommage aux victimes de la guerre, cette place fait pitié. Elle est mal entretenue et mal fréquentée. La seule chose qu'on a envie ici est de s'enfuir le plus vite.

After a walk through Gastown, thought I should drop by here and pay my respects to our fallen. I was disgusted to see the condition of the park surrounding the cenotaph. City of Vancouver - last I heard you were looking for ways to keep city workers employed. Maybe send them to clean up this small area now and then. Some of us want to remember our veterans more than once a year. Please let us do so without tripping over week old cigarette butts, hamburger wrappers, and unknown liquids.

The public square/park sits in the middle of a very public place (between Gastown and Chinatown) and, anytime there's greenery, that is a good time (and a good thing). It is also in the cross hairs of the DTES and, because the Downtown Eastside is where the unfortunate part of the population make their home, it is a bit gritty at times.
The "Square" is really more of a "Triangle" which was "Government Square" around the 1880's. It is also the site for a Courthouse (long since gone) where tables were set up during 1915 to enlist young men into WW I. Everywhere around the park there are reminders. Nothing like a strong symbol to evoke a pile of sensory impressions; this translates to the Brodie Hat here in Victory Square.
In 1924, this 30' tall cenotaph was erected in the memory of Canada's youth that went to war and never returned. The cenotaph is 3-sided and on each corner there is a replica of a steel Brodie Helmet carved into the granite. Look around the park ...
Every lamp post bears a helmet on its top. There are so many of them, at times it feels like walking through a military cemetery and brought forth an image of the empty soldier's boots, rifle standing in place of the soldier, and the helmet atop the rifle. We see that today when grieving soldiers honor a fallen comrade.
The Brodie Hat has been called many names since its inception circa 1915; among those names are:
Battle Bowler (after the English Bowler hat)
Doughboy (USA)
Dish Pan hat
Wash Basin
Salad Bowl (name given by the Germans)
It was the first protective headgear.
Around the park, we particularly enjoyed the very fanciful and humorous comic book, cartoonish paintings on the utility boxes that border the park. Express yourself, Vancouver. Public Art jumps out and bites us on the (proverbial) nose when we least expect it.

It is sad that a memorial to soldiers killed in action has graffiti on it. The park is an ok place to hang out if you don’t mind the smoke and sketchy people there. The groups kept to themselves but still, this is t anyplace I’d go out of my way to see. It is just a busy downtown park.
