I was in the neighbourhood on the anniversary of this tragedy, and thought I had better make an effort to come pay my respects. Very difficult to find, I walked back and forth between the tennis courts and the south end of Second Beach before stumbling across a low gray wall next to a picnic area. (Park people - a few directional signs please!). What's the big deal you say? Of the 329 people who died on 23 June 1985, 268 were Canadians! So, while enjoying a stroll on the seawall, or playing tennis nearby, etc etc, take a moment to come by and read the names - all of them; and think about how fragile freedom is.
And, if you want further detail, don't bother with Google, read the Excellently detailed review below by PookyCake.

The bombing of Air India Flight 182 is the most atrocious act of terrorism hatched on Canadian soil. It happened on 23 June 1985 and resulted in the deaths of 329 passengers and crew. To date, only one individual has ever been charged for the crime. The event and its aftermath still haunt hundreds of family members 35 years later. Those affected, however, can take a moment of solace in the fact that the victims’ memories will live on in the Air India Memorial unveiled in Stanley Park on 27 July 2007.

The memorial is located in Ceperley Park Playground, near Second Beach and the Stanley Park Seawall. It is fairly understated to the point where I’m sure a lot of people walk by it without even knowing it’s there. Still, for a memorial, I think it’s quite well done. According to the designers, LEES+Associates, the “main feature of the memorial is a crafted stone wall that rises from the ground in an arc, but ends abruptly to symbolize the trajectory of Flight 182.” In a nice touch, the “flight path” terminates with a stone from Ahakista, Ireland, while the stones below are from all of the places touched by the tragedy. Importantly, the wall is etched with the names of those who were lost in the bombing; thus, the deep symbolism encompassed by the memorial is hard to miss and offers us an important moment to consider vita contemplativa.

When I first came upon the memorial its location struck me as a little odd. Why in a children’s park, of all places? But then, as I stood before the monument, it hit me: 82 of the victims were children. That’s 82 lives of “innocence” lost. The park, then, offers an interesting juxtaposition. On the one hand, you have a solemn place of remembrance; on the other hand, you have a place and space where children play, offering hope for the future.

As a place to honour the victims of this terrible tragedy, I think the Air India Memorial is exceptional. It balances the magnitude of its subject matter with its rather light-hearted setting in such a way that we’re encouraged to remember those lost while concomitantly acknowledging the future at play in Ceperley Park Playground.

NOTE: For those wanting more background and context to this memorial, I highly recommend watching Discovery Channel’s MAYDAY episode on the disaster.
