Prachtig decor en kostuums. Geweldige cast. Met veel humor gebracht en ook goed te volgend als Engels niet je eerste taal is. Genoten van de voorstelling op deze bijzondere locatie. Complimenten voor de strakke organisatie en de vele vrijwilligers die alles in goede banen leiden.

Staying in Vancouver from the UK and loving Shakespeare we bought tickets and were really excited - the setting is stunning - but I'm afraid it stops there.
The production of Midsummer Nights Dream was more pantomime than Shakespeare
The cast overacted throughout but the blame lies with the (British) director who had changed so much of the script that that all poetry was lost.
Horribly disappointing and total waste of time and money.

We enjoyed the show in the big top tent. The performance was wonderful. The costumes, dancing and music added to the show. Since we were visitors to this area and unfamiliar with the festival, we first had tickets to Romeo and Juliette which were in a smaller tent, with no view of the mountains. We didn't realize this from the website and changed our tickets as that was the experience we wanted.

Bard on the Beach Founder & Artistic Director, Christopher Gaze, has this month release a YouTube clip in which he tells viewers of the difficult decision taken to cancel the Shakespeare Festival’s 31st season.
Gaze, standing in the place at which the tents are usually pitched, notes to viewers how painful the decision to
cancel this year’s schedule is, but promises the white tents — long associated with BontheB runs at Kitsiilano’s Vanier Park — will rise up again next year.
The plays selected for this year’s run will be transferred to next year, & include Midsummer’s Night, Henry V, Love Labours Lost & Paradise Lost. Patrons may either transfer tickets purchased to next year’s summer run, get a refund or donate the sum to support the non-profit, which has been entertaining audiences for 30 years.
I attended the first season in 1990, happy the performances were staged a nice, pleasant short walk from our then home on Kits Point, & have since attended most of BotBsummer seasons over the past three decades.
The first performance I attended with my husband, others sometimes with friends as well, & after my husband decided fairly early on he was not up for any more - adding with a straight face, as he knew how so many of them ended- I started going with friends who had the affection I had for the Bard, & happily was afforded the opportunity to attend a good few with a friend who worked with a theatre organization & received complimentary tickets.
After much persuading, I got my husband to relent & attend Tom Stoppard’s R&G with me which BotB was staging. I guess he did not know how the play ended!
BotB did a wonderful job. Stoppard’s plays are always such a pleasure to see & hear. My husband, too, enjoyed it.
I love seeing Shakespeare outside,& loved going to Shakespeare performed in Regents Park in London, when I worked there or later on on longer research trips or visits to friends in a city which still remains my favorite.
I have also been delighted by Gaze’s performances outside of the non-profit tents.
Once when Cheesecake Etc. owner, Michael, held a special soirée at which Gaze did an informal performance, & at a friend’s birthday party, held at the wonderful Jolly’s Indian Bistro on 4th at Bayswater, where Gaze stood on a chair & paid tribute to her in a delightfully theatrical way.
It was a fun-filled night, equally filled with delicious food prepared by Jolly, at his restaurant, which has long been a neighborhood favorite, & now, in these tough times for all in the food industry, is open from 5 p.m to 9 p.m, for pick up takeouts, as well as through the various delivery services operating in Vancouver.
I plan to take my two wonderful grandchildren to BotB in 2021. Henry V is one of my best plays.

Great venue. Great performers. Very enjoyable. Wish there was a venue for dinner near by. Ate on Beach and took False Creek ferry there.

The vibrancy and energy if the performances were second to none. Emotions were stirred in all patrons. I went to matinees with the school kids, who were also enjoying the shows immensely

Thought that would get your attention. As a regular attendee of the performances since 1992 and now a season ticket holder, I love the Bard. My daughter, now 23 has been attending with me since age 13. You see where I'm going here. The house manager was great, and offered to move us. But why should we move from seats together when what needed to happen was the 3 adult women with the disruptive barely 6 year old needed to be told to take care of the situation. The child was too young to understand the play, asked repeated questions, which were responded over and over. Oh, and did I mention the seat kicking. So, what play did she attend, do you ask? A full on, 2 people die in the first 20 seconds, rendition of Coriolanus. Yup Coriolanus.
Now, it seems that many parents argued that 12 was too old for their kids, and successfully got the age limit lowered to 6. Try telling the kid who hid in her mother's arm when the battle scenes raged that she was old enough to attend this performance. Setting aside the questionable parenting, I maintain that rules are meant for folks too dumb to use their common sense. And 12 was a perfect age. You want your kids at performances before then, lots of local theatre that does kid friendly versions.
And the primary issue is why should I pay good money for myself and my adult daughter to attend and then not be able to hear the dialogue over the chatter of the child and the 3 adults with her. I'll go back next year, as already have my season tickets, but when booking performances will be asking some pointed questions about whether there are any children seated in my section.
Great show, lousy situation.

Even if you're not a Shakespeare fan, you can't help but enjoy the spectacle this theatre brings. The entire crew put on a very good show, beautiful sets, costumes and acting - including the dog! Highly recommended for locals and visitors alike as an cultural experience in this city.

We've been BOTB members for years and rarely miss a performance. This year was terrific with the possible exception of Coriolanus. It's interesting that it has been so popular that extra performances were added. I suspect this is because it is rarely produced -- and there's a reason. The central character is one-dimensional. Coriolanus, played as either a man or a woman, is angry, vindictive, aggressive, attacking, brutal. There's no subtlety to him/her. Shakespeare was more focused on larger social issues and used Coriolanus as the vehicle but left the character fleshless.
But BOTB deserves accolades for the production. Every year the performances get better, more professional, more enjoyable.

We're looking forward to seeing an evening (7:00) play at Bard on the Beach next week (early July). How cool is it likely to get at that venue? Will a skirt, top, and sweater be good enough? Or will I wish I had long underwear and a parka? :)

It can get chilly when the sun goes down around 9/9:30, especially by the beach. Sweater or shawl will do. I usually don't wear sandals. Don't like walking across the grass in the way out because dew is forming chilly. You won't need a parka but I would have a jacket or sweater to layer up with.

Hi there,
Ticket availability will depend on the production. Our productions in the Douglas Campbell Theatre (The Merchant of Venice and The Two Gentlemen of Verona) have a smaller capacity, and may potentially sell out in advance. You should be fine to purchase for Much Ado About Nothing and The Winter's Tale on the day of the performance.
As always, we certainly recommend purchasing in advance, but understand that isn't always possible! If you have any questions, do feel free to give our Box Office a call at 604.739.0559 or visit us online.
Hope to see you this summer!
