Although we enjoyed the more "traditional art" in the Gallery, the Inuit displays were amazing! Yes, the pieces in the tower were difficult to see, some due to placement and others due to the reflection on the glass. However, there was one entire floor devoted to Inuit art which was very nicely displayed and we truly enjoyed our time here. So much talent!
There was also information regarding each area the the work had come from and flags representing the various Inuit Nations.

For my visit to Winnipeg, WAG was on my must-see-three list of museums. I enjoyed the visit. I definitely recommend a visit if you are in Winnipeg, but, with one caveat, I would not recommend a visit to Winnipeg specially for WAG. The special caveat is if you have an affinity for Inuit art from the peoples of the Arctic. At WAG there is a full floor, at least a third of the museum, dedicated to these pieces. This is the largest collection I recall seeing in my travels.
Speaking to the Inuit pieces, I did appreciate that there was a guidebook that identified the works, which were noted with numbers. What did disappoint is that there was nothing in the guidebook except the artists’ names and that type of information, missing any context for any of the pieces or the artists’ inspirations for their work. Some art is just what it is and speaks for itself, so not everything needs a story or explanation, but there were none at all here, which was disappointing to me.
The other works were nice and I enjoyed pursuing them. I did not notice anything of particular renown but the middle floor is worthy of half an hour. In all I spent about two hours at the museum. I would note also that there are a number of interesting items for sale in the gift shop and it is worth a visit on its own.

Excellent exhibit of Inuit art during our visit. Nice range of art from different eras. A few group of 7, a Chagall for the traditionalists. Some contemporary art installations in other sections. Many lovely items in the big gift shop.

On my recent visit to Winnipeg I was looking forward to seeing the new WAG with the opening of the new building and the focus on Inuit Art. I found that the exhibit of Inuit Art was below my expectations. The Inuit sculpture is primarily housed in a very tall plexiglass tower. It is overcrowded with small to medium sized soap stone carvings that are difficult to see for a number of reasons: the height of the tower makes it almost impossible to see the items at the top, the reflection of light on the plexiglass makes it difficult to see the items at any level and the inability to see the back of the items as you cannot walk around them. There is an interactive information display terminal that you can use to look at a pieces close up on the terminal but what than is the point of visiting the gallery if I am going to look at the item on a computer screen.
Inside the galleries themselves there are a few colored pencil Inuit drawings and some larger soap stone sculptures. The special exhibitions of indigenous artist’s sculptures were not very interesting. By no means am I an expert on Inuit and Indigenous art but I have seen many exhibits of Inuit and other First Nations artists that have been very robust and interesting. With the focus that Winnipeg has on First Nations people’s I had expected to see fantastic works at WAG and left very disappointed.
There was one gallery of non indigenous work that is part of the WAG permanent collection and it too was under whelming. All in all I think the new building is probably a great event space but if you want to see First Nations Art go to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg (just outside of Toronto), Ontario.
I do want to acknowledge however that all of the staff, including the cafe staff were very pleasant and friendly.

The art gallery is very nice and interesting. The Inuit art is amazing! We enjoy coming here and seeing all the art work. They have a small cafeteria called Kalita which has excellent soups and other foods. I tried the chicken and Swiss crepe with asparagus and bechamel sauce which I enjoyed. I had some soups several months before and all the soups I tried was also so tasty. When we go to the art gallery we like to try the food here.

Inuit sculpture exhibit was a huge disappointment. Looks good in photos but 2 story vertical presentation means you have to crawl to see the lower pieces and the higher pieces you can't access except from afar. Terrible lighting.

I appreciate the art that was on display at the gallery. The unfortunate part is I started seeing similar types of pieces using similar mediums and I got bored. I don't mean to take away from the art. It was all beautiful and well crafted. There was just a lot of the same. I would go see it but would check to see what has rotated out in case you visit again and it is still the same art on display. The benefit to this gallery is that they have some regular pieces and rotating new art that comes in from time to time.

We went into the new Quamajug inuit Winnipeg Art Gallery addition and could not have been more disappointed. A huge glass tree shelf of sculptures was over stuffed with under scaled soap stone carvings, unorganized and not seeable due to glare. The painting exhibits are poorly curated and lack flow. Loaded with posters and digital art that seemed out of place, I ask, where is the art? A lovely limestone building, full of nothing. I will not go back.

Architecture of the building is amazing. Nice art and a new Inuit section with lots of sculptures. They occasionally have a free Sunday, but you need advance tickets due to the pandemic.
