A well-designed and well-maintained zoo laid out in regional habitats. The popular Churchill section (with the polar bear habitat) was certainly the highlight but we also enjoyed the gibbons and the Asian tiger

This zoo ranks at the top of the major zoos we have visited throughout the US and Europe. The diverse animals are spread out over acres of land with wonderful habitats. We particularly enjoyed the Churchill exhibit which features numerous polar bears on the tundra, underwater and in rocky settings. The Tundra Grill allowed you to eat and watch the bears frolick or rest lazily. The family of Gibbons were entertaining, the snowy owl and snow leopards gorgeous. But there is so much more. Staff and numerous volunteers help direct you and answer your questions. There is a tram through part of the property to save some walking if you choose. The gift shop is full of shirts, hats, and plush stuffed animals. We saw numerous groups of children touring. The zoo is ony one part of this amazing Park. Enjoy their website for photos of what you will see and a map of the grounds. Allow several hours to enjoy the zoo.

Nice facility and environment for animals. Poor environment for *seeing* animals.
No polar bears, no wolves, no musk ox. No cougars.
Two reindeer, two seals (outside only).
One snowy owl, two snow leopards, a few elk and a few bison.
So, public viewing of animals is not a priority, that’s okay. For those expecting to see zoo animals, consider going elsewhere.

Staff are not warm and friendly.
No paper maps. Not senior friendly as it is hard to find your way around without a map. Not well sign posted.
Drinks way overpriced, if you are traveling from out of town its overpriced. $7 water
$6.50 vitamin water and a fanta $5.
The poor young staff in the restaurant not treated well by supervisors. The younger staff where the most friendly.
Animals great, some enclosures are too small.

This is by far one of the best zoos I've been to! Most of the animals were active or at least visible. Enclosures are large and well maintained. Food was delicious and eating next to the polar bears was unbelievable! The dining space and bathrooms were very clean and the staff were exceptional. We also like the layout & lush vegetation, if felt like we were on an adventure through the park.

Let’s start off with the price - totally reasonable for a zoo in a big city. However we spent a few hours walking around and were lucky to have caught a glimpse of 50% of the animals. No polar bears. During our visit we did not see a single staff member out and about either. All the concessions inside the park were closed INCLUDING the “kangaroo walk” area. Huge let down for my very excited kids.

We were visiting Winnipeg for a weekend with our daughter, and she suggested going to the zoo to see the polar bears. I read the Zoo website and all the TripAdvisor reviews. Some were good and some were bad. But we thought we would go and give it a shot. I have no problems paying the admission price, I want to support the zoo. What I found very disappointing was the lack of animals to see. We saw no polar bears, and the people that we spoke with who are regular zoo visitors, said it is rare to see the polar bears, and that they are very hard to find. We ended up doing a lot of walking to see very minimal animal life. Unfortunately, for us, it was a real letdown and a big waste of time. If you want to see a polar bear, go to the gift shop and buy one on your way out.

We had a great time at the Winnipeg Zoo. The animals are well taken care of and zoo keepers were kind, friendly, and very helpful! We loved the polar beers, seals, and monkeys! It was us and our early 20’s kids and we all had a great time. We highly recommend!

Winnipeg Zoo offers a captivating experience with its diverse animal exhibits and well-maintained grounds. The variety of species, from polar bears to exotic birds, provides an engaging and educational visit for both families and wildlife enthusiasts. The zoo's commitment to conservation and animal welfare is evident, making it a worthwhile destination. However, occasional overcrowding during peak hours could be improved for a more enjoyable experience. Overall, Winnipeg Zoo is a commendable attraction that combines entertainment with a valuable focus on wildlife conservation.

The "Road to Churchill" feature is what makes this zoo different from most. I was disappointed not to see what was apparently their last surviving musk ox ( a tribute in a way to the large paddock) and the polar bear section was very well done - they had loads of space, with decent swimming opportunities. And the underwater tunnel meant you could get a really great view of them swimming
Rest of the zoo was fine without being in any way exceptional

do they have any zoo maps that the visitors can get when they get to the zoo?
or do i have to print it out before i visit the zoo?

So I will be in Winnipeg in 2 weeks (mid Feb). The Journey to Churchill is indoors? I was told the zoo is open all year round, but will there be anything else to see if it's below 0 Celsius?

The "Journey to Churchill" is primarily outdoors. The only indoor aspect (to the best of my knowledge) is when you go underground to watch the animals swimming.
I have been vistiting the zoo for over 50 years and have found that they have changed the animal exhibits to reflect more of what really lives in our climate. The monkey exhibit (along with other more exotic animals) has been greatly reduced but there are now more animals on display in that are "Manitoba Survivors": the wolf, polar bear and bison enclosures are quite expansive and although these animals are living in a cage, at least it is a big cage. Many of the bigger cats are winter hardy and they are out there, too. Same goes with many deer species.
Yes, it is winter but there will be lots to see! Dress warm and hope for the best. Bring your skates and a toboggan (or Crazy Carpet) as there is a great recreational facility in the park that doesn't cost you anything - Unless you buy hot chocolate!

How long should one allot for time when touring the Zoo? We are (4 adults) traveling to Winnipeg and want to see as much of the city as we can in the day and 1/2 there.

If you arrive as it opens, I would think about 2 hours. There’s an open minibus that can be accessed & the fellow that drives it is very helpful!

I wonder if you are confusing "emaciated" (thin, due to starvation) with "moulting" (winter fur being shed in summer). Really, you need to address your question to the zoo's administration!

Wheelchairs are available in the foyer where you purchase your ticket. Just ask the cashier when you make your purchase. Hope this answers your question.
