I want to give this a fantastic five star review but can’t. The concept of Journey to Churchill is so cool. The underwater tunnel is incredible and the seals swimming were mesmerizing. The small replica Churchill was pretty neat. But the bears didn’t swim the whole time we were there (four hours: four different passes through the tunnel) which of course can’t be forced and it’s just luck of the draw. But we were disappointed :(.
Free parking is awesome. Affordable entry is family friendly. Other neat animals to see.

Assiniboine Park Zoo is an 80-acre zoo at the west end of Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It has been best known for decades for its polar bear exhibit, Now next to it you have The Indigenous Peoples Garden

We took the train from Winnipeg to Churchill Manitoba to see Polar bears. While on the train we heard about this zoo. We had planned to stay in Winnipeg for a few days after the train trip and that gave us time to visit the Zoo. We went here to see the polar bear exhibit, but this zoo has much more to offer. There is a good variety of animals and some well-done displays (including the Churchill area exhibit). The price is reasonable for what is included and the exchange rate when we were there was good. The cafe is very nice and overlooks the Polar bear exhibit. I would say this attraction is a must see when in Winnepeg.

Zoo Lights is a phenomenal Christmas Light display set up through Assiniboine Park Zoo. Not only are there 1.5 Million Christmas Lights but also live entertainment, various bands playing in warm up tents, outdoor entertainment such as fire dancers, hot chocolate, food, bar drinks, mini donuts, and the animals at night such as the wolves to watch. It took about 2 hours to walk through the display. It is absolutely incredible. I highly recommend it when in Winnipeg at Christmas time.

I went to this zoo on a very cold day (-25 C) in late December. I hailed an Uber to the zoo, which costed me around $20 from the airport. However, the Uber rides were extremely expensive in the afternoon-evening, so I had to call a taxi, which costed me $27. So this is something to consider if you are staying near the airport.
Here are my impressions:
The great:
1. the setting was perfect to see polar bears, bisons, snow owls, and various animals that strive in the winter cold.
2. the polar bear viewing area was in-doors and very comfortable. They put on quite a show! (PS. the cafeteria is one of the best places to see polar bears).
3. there was a large variety of animals, much more than I expected. I especially liked the meerkats, spider monkeys, spotted seals and the Amur tiger.
4. the staffs were very kind :)
The meh:
1. apparently the polar bears don't go into the water/pool in the dead of December, which would have been interesting to see. I waited quite a while with a few people by the pool area.
2. many areas such as the Toucan ridge were closed off, which was quite disappointing.
3. the fast food at the cafeteria were on the expensive side.
The eeks:
1. the zoo is quite large, and the ground was completely covered in snow, so it was easy to get lost, which happened to me quite a few times.
2. in mid-late December, the place was very quiet, so it was a little bit scary at some points being the only one walking around, especially in a small area that had a bat cave.
3. there was a lack of heating in several places, notably the front entrance and the gift shop.

As the title states, I was really impressed by the zoo!
We visited on a cold day which meant the crowds were all at home so we had a very quiet pleasant walk around!
Animals are gorgeous with the Tiger, Seals and of course the Polar bears among our favourites.
Would gladly visit again soon!

So I will be in Winnipeg in 2 weeks (mid Feb). The Journey to Churchill is indoors? I was told the zoo is open all year round, but will there be anything else to see if it's below 0 Celsius?

The "Journey to Churchill" is primarily outdoors. The only indoor aspect (to the best of my knowledge) is when you go underground to watch the animals swimming.
I have been vistiting the zoo for over 50 years and have found that they have changed the animal exhibits to reflect more of what really lives in our climate. The monkey exhibit (along with other more exotic animals) has been greatly reduced but there are now more animals on display in that are "Manitoba Survivors": the wolf, polar bear and bison enclosures are quite expansive and although these animals are living in a cage, at least it is a big cage. Many of the bigger cats are winter hardy and they are out there, too. Same goes with many deer species.
Yes, it is winter but there will be lots to see! Dress warm and hope for the best. Bring your skates and a toboggan (or Crazy Carpet) as there is a great recreational facility in the park that doesn't cost you anything - Unless you buy hot chocolate!

How long should one allot for time when touring the Zoo? We are (4 adults) traveling to Winnipeg and want to see as much of the city as we can in the day and 1/2 there.

We spent about 4 hours at the Zoo, but we lingered at a few exhibits. You can certainly cover it in 3, but we took our time. If you have a little extra time, you can continue over to the English Gardens in the park. The Garden is quite peaceful and beautiful and worth a visit.

Why do the bison look emaciated.

I wonder if you are confusing "emaciated" (thin, due to starvation) with "moulting" (winter fur being shed in summer). Really, you need to address your question to the zoo's administration!
are there wheelchairs available?

Wheelchairs are available in the foyer where you purchase your ticket. Just ask the cashier when you make your purchase. Hope this answers your question.

The zoo is not an inside one although there is Toucsn Ridge which is a tropical house and the White Handed Gibbons are inside during the winter. Most other animals are hardy enough for our climate of down to -40 C. We regularly walk round the zoo and the last time, when it was -20C we saw the new baby White Handed Gibbon, what a cutie. At the moment it is so small and held close by its mother the keepers have not been able to note its sex.

Why are you hours so lousy? It would be nice to go during the week after work but you are closed! Summer is short and I go to the cabin on weekends and many others that I know. Since you have raised your prices, you would think you would want to be more accommodating.
