The guided tour began with a short video.

Excellent guided tours, artifacts are amazing, and the pride in these little local museums is second to none. If you are wondering if it is worth it to buy the pass for all 3 museums, don’t hesitate at all. My daughter, a high school student, joined me and she thoroughly enjoyed all 3.

Inauguré officiellement en 1983 par le prince Charles et la princesse Diana, ce petit musée de Shelburne est un des huit ateliers de fabrication de doris ayant œuvré à Shelburne entre 1880 et 1971. Légers et polyvalents, les doris sont de petits bateaux à fonds plats et faible tirant d’eau avec, des côtés surélevés et des proues pointues. Faciles à construire, grâce à leurs lignes simples, et capables de résister à l’océan accidenté, les doris constituaient un élément clé de l’industrie de la pêche en Nouvelle-Écosse et ailleurs dans le monde. On les utilisait aussi comme embarcations de sauvetage sur les grands navires à passagers. Une loi du gouvernement canadien exigeant que tous les navires dépassant une certaine taille soient équipés d’embarcations de sauvetage auto-gonflables a contribué à réduire le marché des doris en bois et mena à la fermeture des ateliers de fabrication de doris de Shelburne. Le Dory Shop Museum, qui compte plus de 50 000 doris construites depuis son ouverture en 1887, fait aujourd’hui partie de la grande famille des Musées de la Nouvelle-Écosse.

We wandered into the Dory Museum earlier this week (it was closed) but we’re welcomed in anyway by the master dory builder. Fascinating! He shared lots of information about the history of dory building but also his personal story as a boat builder. Wonderful stop while in Shelburne!

Came here today. It was closed, but we walked around on the grounds of the building. Very well maintained and very nice for pictures. Such a beautiful spot for sure and worth the drive!

Driving around Shelburne, we stopped to ask for info, from a fellow, who took us over to see the Dory Museum & boat building shop. We are grateful to have run into Mr. M Buchanan, the boat builder, and for him to share, his wonderful stories, of the Dory Boat & building. He was very friendly, informative, & interesting. We would definitely return!

Arriving before opening time we were we were welcomed and firstly shown a short video, made for Canadian TV some years ago, of a dory maker who had spent his life making the boats and died aged 96. Our guide was so interesting and knowledgeable and told us about the types of dory which were made, techniques used and how the boats were put to sea. He is part of a team which now races the boats for pleasure now they are no longer in use for fishing. Well worth a visit and we bought a whirlygig which the craftsmen make on the premises and which feature in the day's whirlygig festival. A thoroughly recommended visit to a fascinating museum full of local history and pride
