Yesterday was our land cruise to the Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology which turned out to be much more than a simple tour. When we entered the buildings and saw the actual steam plant & water pumps, we were amazed that the museum staff have preserved everything so well, you could easily think everything is still in perfect working order considering they began their operation 160 years ago.

The tour began in the original coal shed with a comprehensive history that covered the period starting with the founding of Hamilton to the development of the steam plant and pumping equipment that was desperately needed to deliver fresh clean water to avoid future outbreaks of Cholera. Our tour guide not only provided the detailed history, she created a pictorial story to support her presentation and even included members of our group to participate in the demonstrations.

Then we moved to the original boiler room that began with the history behind steam generation with diagrams, pictures and working model steam engines that enhanced the presentation. This guide was even more enthusiastic, extremely knowledgeable and capably presented her portion of the tour in an easy to understand manner while soliciting constant interaction with members of our group. Our tour was not only educational, it was a lot of fun.

We were then handed off to another equally knowledgeable & enthusiastic guide who took us to the pump house. Walking in, we stepped back 160 years in time to an area that was extremely well preserved. This guide began with the history of the building itself including the restored steam driven water pumps. The pumps were so massive the tour took us to each of the 4 floors in order to see all parts of the pump from bottom to top. Kudos to the restoration staff as we saw what the pumps looked like when installed. Then, they started an electrical motor to demonstrate the pump in action. Fantastic.

Our tour guides were fabulous and included so much detail that we left with a thorough understanding of the need for and construction of the facility. I will be returning with my grandson.

I signed my grandchildren up for a " Steamer Saturday "...an event for children. Todays event( Nov 16/19) was to find clues to a missing cat and as clues were discovered throughout the museum the attendees had to figure out where the " missing " cat was . These " classes " are offered periodically on Saturdays , each with a different theme. Experiments are also done with and by the children and they get to enjoy the museum as well. The class is small and the instructor makes the event fun. A bonus , of course , is seeing this beautiful old building and it's pumps, no longer in use but well preserved. It is most impressive and the staff are knowledgable . In the nicer weather a small train circles the yard and provides rides to all. Many events are held throughout the season and I would encourage everyone to attend. I KNOW this beautiful piece of Hamilton's history is sure to impress .

So said Benjamin Franklin so many years ago.

Today, clean water is such a valuable treasure, yet many of us in North America continue to take it for granted. Just open the tap, and "poof"... out comes water. But have you ever wondered what is behind the "poof"?

A good first step in understanding, would be a visit to the Hamilton Museum Of Steam And Technology, located at 700 Woodward Avenue, in Hamilton, Ontario. At this National Historic Site, (Hamilton's first Water Works), you will marvel at the two preserved 70-ton steam powered water pumping engines, housed in the beautifully preserved 160 year old Water Works Building. This Civil and Power Engineering Landmark, showcases the Victorian Age at its best! "Built to last", these engines continue to epitomize the First Industrial Revolution.

Admission costs are minimal ($5.50 to $7.50), and for that you readily experience both the active exhibits and the guided tour. Open daily from 12:00 to 4:00 (excluding Mondays and holidays), this museum is a must visit for individuals and families alike.

The Museum of Steam & Technology is housed in what was Hamilton's Victorian-styled water-works building, which was completed in 1859. There is a museum section which explains what you're seeing and model steam engines are demonstrated. The main exhibit is the huge dual steam engine and mechanisms which were used to pump water from Lake Ontario up to a reservoir in the hills above the city. Everything here was built not only to be functional but to impress, and the more you see the more impressed you get. If you like the notion of "steampunk" then this is definitely the place for you. Docents explain things and perform the demonstrations in the museum, and give tours of the rest, which is the only way you can see it.

Have seen the tall Smoke Stack in the distance many times as I pass through Hamilton. Decided to stop today to check it out. Picked a time when it was slow so got a personal tour by a young Women that had a unbelievable amount of knowledge on the 1850 era Massive Steam Engine and Water Pumping equipment. Has not ran in decades but is beautifully maintained and lubricated so it could be used. On certain days they have a miniature train that runs around the grounds. Surely a hit with the kids. Not running the day I visited.

I'm not sure that the museum's name is entirely accurate (more like "Steam & 19th Century Pumping Technology") but we enjoyed our visit. For people interested in history, it's a worthwhile visit, especially with the enthusiastic tour guide Celia who helped us imagine what life was like when Hamilton was among the first cities to have running water.

Es impresionante en nivel de conservación de toda la maquinaria a pesar de llevar 100 años de estar fuera de uso, si se quisiera encender, está como “un fosforito”!! A eso se le llama CULTURA

Great preservation of early municipal infrastructure and architecture. Smaller than expected and could use more exhibits

If you want to see Industrial Revolution technology this is the place. Took my family with a six and four year old boys. The technology is a must see for engineering nerds.
