We stopped at this place on our way to Ottawa. Very tranquil spot for a picnic, you can buy a permit and fish. We were very lucky to witness the locks being opened for 2 boats that were lined up to pass through. It is fascinating how they open one lock at the time as the passage is on 4 different levels. As well there is an overhead railway bridge. Really charming spot to spend a morning.

One of 24 lockstations on what is now the Rideau Canal National Historic Site of Canada, Kingston Mills (locks 46, 47, 48, and 49) is also the former site of the first mills built by the British for the defensible waterway. It currently features a set of three locks, a turning basin, a detached upper lock, a hydro-electric station, a blockhouse (one of four on the Rideau), a lockstation office, and a visitor’s centre (formerly the lockmaster’s residence). Build by Robert Drummond at Cataraqui Falls in 1784, the site’s four locks each provide 3.6 metres of lift to connect the Cataraqui River to nearby Colonel By Lake (Drummond is also responsible for the Brewers Mills and Davis Mills works). Fun Fact: The locks at Kingston Mills utilize all three manual methods of opening and closing gates. The only other lockstation to exhibit the push bar, swing bar, and endless chain mechanisms is Ottawa Locks. Neat! Many men lost their lives during the construction of Kingston Mills. Drummond himself almost died when a chunk of rock blasted through the side of his home. Construction of the lockstation cost 60,000£ and was only surpassed by Jones Falls and Ottawa lockstations. Another notable feature about Kingston Mills is an on-site railway bridge. It crosses the lower locks and carries the main Canadian National Railway line. Originally, the line crossed the lower locks on a wooden bridge built in 1853 for the Grand Trunk Railway. The replacement steel bridge on site now dates to 1929 and is still active. On-site amenities include boater camping, picnic tables, barbecue grills, chart sales, washrooms, potable water, overnight mooring, day-use docking, public telephones, and free vehicle parking. Note that gas is available downstream at marinas in Kingston. The hydro-electric station dates to 1914 and continues to generate power. Designated a National Historic Site in 1925 and a World Heritage Site in 2007, Kingston Mills is at 563 Kingston Mills Road in the Loyalist settlement of Cataraqui (now the Ontario municipality of Kingston). Parks Canada operates the site. To ensure passage through the locks, boaters should arrive at least two hours ahead of closing. There is an on-site swing bridge. Built of steel in 1988, the bridge has 2.3 metres of clearance and swings on demand. Budget about 90 minutes fully experience everything, including the inside of the blockhouse, Kingston Mills has to offer. The blockhouse has a kitchen, sleeping quarters, a cellar, a storage room, and quarters for an officer. Ask one of the lockmasters for a tour of the blockhouse if you find that its door is locked.

Kingston Mlls is a very beautiful serene place to visit.
In summer months the locks are in operation with boats going up the Rideau river and then down to Lake Ontario.
Good walking trails. Places to fish, picnic tables etc.

A beautiful place to have a picnic. The grounds are clean. The museums were very interesting filled with history. The students working the gates would answer any questions you have on the waterways.

Fuimos con mi hija de 6 años y fue una aventura para ella ver cómo los botes pasaban por las exclusas. La próxima vez queremos volver para hacer un picnic y durar más tiempo

There is sun or shade, as you wish, and the setting is quite pastoral. You can swim on a hot day or just relax beside the Creek. Nice spot.

This is a wonderful place to spend some time watching boats go through the locks. The people working the locks were very will to explain what was going on. Take a picnic and spend the afternoon
