Trip back in time.
Beautiful house well preserved seems like owners just left for a walk.
Loved the tour. Loved the museum

One of Clarkson’s Earliest Settled Sites
Benares Historic House (Benares) is a restored, 19th-century, Georgian-style, family home on a scenic estate (2.3 hectares) with original furnishings. Home to four generations of the Harris family, the house (built by Edgar Neave in 1835, purchased by Captain James Beveridge Harris in 1836, and rebuilt in 1857 after a fire) has been restored to reflect daily life in the First World War era. It opened to the public as Mississauga’s newest museum in 1995. No less than 95% of the artifacts within the structure, including the furniture, dishes, letters, and pictures, are original to the Harris family and the house. Fun Fact: Benares is thought to be the inspiration behind “Jalna”, a bestselling series of books written by Mazo de la Roche. Also, the house and most of its contents were donated by the three great grandchildren of Captain Harris — Geoffrey Harris Sayers, Dora Sayers Caro, and Barbara Sayers Larson (Captain Harris [1797-1884] passed Benares on to his only surviving son, Arthur Harris [1843-1932], who passed it on to his unmarried daughter, Naomi Harris [1883-1968], who in turn passed it on to her nieces and nephew). Neat! Look for the red-brick house, named after the holiest city in Hinduism and Jainism, at 1507 Clarkson Road North in the Ontario community of Mississauga. It is open for guided tours from friendly and knowledgeable interpreters Thursday through Sunday between noon and 4:00 in the afternoon (note that the last tour departs at 3:30). Admission (excluding tax) is $15 for a family, $6 for adults, $4.80 for seniors (65+), and $4.80 for students. Children under three are free. Budget about 90 minutes to fully appreciate everything the museum has to offer. Be sure to start with the on-site Visitor Centre for an interpretive gallery about Benares and its original occupants. Accessible areas within the house include the summer kitchen, the dining room, the drawing room, the sitting room, the front entrance, the nursery, the guest room, the master bedroom, the servant’s room, the winter kitchen, the pantry, and the cellar. Benares does not have an on-site gift shop, restaurant, or snack bar. Parking at the historic house is free.

Just checked it out after hours and it was a beauty looking place. Lots of tall trees in an amazing setting ideal for an outdoor picnic or just as a short hike.

Benares Historic House private tour of a family's Christmas
2017年12月 • 好友
We spent a magical afternoon on a tour given by Christiana just before Christmas, 2017. The family who had lived in the home for generations was brought to life through the treasures they had left behind and through Christiana's stories. (I was particularly inspired by the life story of daughter Naomi!). We played the piano and sang Christmas Carols, dressed in aprons and 'played' in the old kitchen. I cannot recommend this tour enough to people who enjoy history and who see the value in protecting our shared heritage.

Exquisite estate! A "stunning" heritage home decorated for Christmas. Loved the history and tour given by Christiana. Spanning four generations this Georgian style home had many original furnishings and artifacts to view. A great way to spend a few hours if you love local history and heritage homes. We really enjoyed our visit.

Nice to visit at Xmas

They dress this historic house up for Xmas, and sometimes have sleigh rides with horses for free. It's a quick visit, maybe 20 minutes, tiny little gift shop as well.

Great to watch the entertainers on the porch of Benares Historic House while you sit back in your lawn chair under the trees in total relaxation. Now there is a market as sell with honey, soaps, food vendors etc.

Lovely older home available for walk through. They offer local entertainment / talent outdoors in the summer on Friday nights. Check the website for further details. . They suggest a donation at the end of the concert.

Hidden gem
2017年8月 • 独自旅游
I set out to do Benares and perhaps Bradley on the day. I did have a few other options as well. I parked the motorcycle outside Benares house, hoping to spend about half an hour at most.
Of course, I was greeted pleasantly by Hope, who asked me if I'd like a tour. I thought I might as well, and what an excellent decision that was!
Hope was a wealth of knowledge, and the more she showed me around, the more I felt like an actual witness of the life and times, versus looking on as a tourist from a different era.
I probably spent close to two hours, and I learnt so much. Hope even played a song on the piano. It was probably because it was rainy and a weekday, I had a wonderful tour guide all to myself.
I will definitely try and make it for the High Tea, and the Downtown Abbey. Who knew Mississauga hid these little cultural gems?
On Hope's suggestion, I visited Bradley House next, which was also great, and another review. :)
