My cousin recommended this book store and I finally got here. We spent 45 minutes browsing. There is a great selection of history and Canadiana. The store is very intimate and classical music was playing the whole time we were there. If you love books, this is the place for you!

We visit this tiny book store every time we are at NOTL and find it difficult not to linger over so many interesting books. Yes the selection may be limited, but what is there is very interesting, and not as overwhelming as a huge store. The well-dressed lady minding the store (and likely was the owner) knew exactly where she got the book we purchased, and was able to tell us something interesting about it. Loved that about the store!

Ah, the Old Niagara Bookshop! Described elsewhere as a “landmark stop” for having been in operation for just over 50 years, this quaint little bookstore is located in Old Town on Niagara-on-the-Lake. Both externally and internally, this little shop looks and feels much more like a grandmother’s home. All of the typical hallmarks are there: cross-stitched “open sign”; little animal trinkets throughout the store, including cuckoo clocks; the old-style furniture selection; the fact that a good number of the books are sealed in plastic wrap (I know quite a few old folks who wrap their tables and chairs in this stuff to “keep them clean”); and the use of good ol’ fashioned hand-written receipts. Oh, and yes, this place is run by an old grandmother as well – and she’s run this shop for the duration of its life. So, in the end, it’s not surprising that this charming little bookstore carries the atmosphere and ambiance that it does.
The Old Niagara Bookshop has been lauded and fondly written about for many of the reasons noted above; but how is it as an independent book seller? Well, when my partner and I patronized this shop while touring Old Niagara we weren’t very impressed. We walked in, observed some of the great Canadian texts on display (“Terry” by Doug Coupland, various Pierre Burton titles, Trudeau’s “On Common Ground”) and overheard the owner talking somewhat rudely to another patron (I only wish I’d remembered what was said). After that, we turned the corner hoping to spy an even larger collection, only to be stopped by a wall and a small collection of children’s texts. To say this place is compact would be an understatement; however, that in and of itself isn’t really a bad thing – I’ve been to many a small bookshop and left with numerous treasures. In this case, though, I was just a bit underwhelmed. “That’s it?” crossed my mind. We then promptly departed without a single purchase.
While we might rightly describe the Old Niagara Bookshop as “charming” or “delightful,” I don’t feel it’s all that great in terms of book selection. I mean, I very much appreciate that there’s a clear emphasis on Canadian history and Canadian literature, but surely we could expand this a little more? The Canadiana on display is usually of a very focused narrative, not the “true sort” the owner has described. There are histories beyond Pierre Burton.

This was alittle book store that was not organized very well. The lady working did not greet us at all. The books were mostly paperback and were over priced. I really tried to find a book but was unsuccessful.

On my first and only visit to the shop, I picked up a $25 item from the used book and paper shelves. When I said I wanted to buy it the owner said she “didn’t feel comfortable selling it” to me so she wanted to keep it and research it further. I was left with the impression that, because I wanted it, she thought it must be worth more. In all my years of shopping in bookstores I have never had this happen. Very unprofessional and disrespectful to a customer. I won’t be going back!

Truly sad that this bookshop was closed. We where visiting NOTL for our 10 year wedding anniversary. My heart was set to walk into this bookshop and explore all the good books that I could purchase and read. I'm a fan of reading so it was for sure on my list of where to stop and explore.
On arrival we parked the car and walked around the beautiful town. And when I got to the shop there was a note stating closed till November 1st (or 2nd) can't recall. And when I looked inside it was a beautiful little spot that I would have loved to step foot in. I rated this spot a 5 because I seen 2 books that I would have bought Goodnight from London *this book is on my to read list & I also wanted to get The Other Einstein
by Marie Benedict and both books where in eyes view. I cried a little inside every time we walked up the road to get back to our car. I will wait till next time we visit. Till then Enjoy this shop I'm sure it is ever readers delight!!! <3

I went in to just see what was there and walked away with three books! It's small, but will have something for everyone. The owner is very kind and knowledgeable. Check it out!

It's lovely to find an old fashioned independent bookstore run by a very knowledgeable local lady. The books themselves are not old, but just browsing around you will find by serendipity something that you must read, or several books. This is impossible to do on line or in large chain bookstores where everything is classified by subject. I don't know what subject I'm interested in until I see a book that tweaks my interest.
There is a great children's section as well.
My wife and I spent about an hour here, part of it chatting with the owner and we managed to escape with only three purchases. This is a great place to visit in historic NOTL.

We were staying across the street at the Olde Angel Inn and for 2 days watched people trickle in and out of the bookstore from our window.Inside the store has a limited selection but a nice atmosphere/setup though we got a rather cool reception from the elderly women working there.If I were home I would probably spend a little more time here,but there were too many more important things to do/see on this vacation.
