Place Royale is where the City of Québec was actually founded in 1608. With buildings that combine French and British influences and the oldest stone church in North America, the square is very much worth a visit as it really is the heart of the old town. Even though it is only small there is plenty to see and do like visit Maison Smith, a fine café where you can soak up the square’s unique charm and history; look around Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church. Erected in 1688, it’s the oldest stone church in North America; See the bust of Louis XIV, the reigning king when New France was founded; Take pictures of the magnificent historic buildings and architecture of the square. It really should be on your essential visit list for Quebec City as you will not be disapponted! - the place just Ouzes old world charm..

Unfortunately, my tour group (The Barker Seniors from New York) only had a couple of hours here. I loved every minute of it and wished we had more time. You feel like you are in a different world, perhaps a small city in Europe. Everything from the old church (one of the oldest in North America) to the cafe where we had lunch was very, very interesting. I would love to return and have a leisurely walk and visit more of the galleries and shops.

The hotel is beautiful- a European feel. Room was ready early and checked in (beware- lines in the late afternoon at front desk are long).
We got a room with 2 beds- 2nd in the living room in the wall (murphy), which took up most of the living room so would not reserve next time. Nice to have a sink, microwave and fridge.
Housekeeping is not available for a 2 night stay- just a towel exchange and trash removal. Note- they do not take the old towels- wet ones left on bathroom floor. Shower ledge is high- banged my leg both ways.
Pool located on 2nd floor. Loved the view from up high to look down and see the pool. Store and Concierge available.

The Place Royale is a lovely town square for walking around in and enjoying the history on Quebec City. Of interest are the different roof styles, reflecting English, French, and Canadian influences.
Note that the pink balloon babies are a temporary art installation “Mignonisme” by Philippe Katerine.

We were here on Wednesday & Thursday, August 7-8, 2024. We stayed at the nearby Hotel Le St. Paul, so we were able to visit here 5 times in two days. It is really a fabulous place as on this exact spot is where Canada began. In 1608 Samuel Champlain built the first permanent settlement it was a fort, store, trading post, and residence all rolled into one. That’s why Place Royal is considered the cradle of French North America. On one side of this square is Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church. Erected in 1688, it’s the oldest stone church in North America. On the opposite side is a sitting area that is crowned with a bust of Louis XIV, the king at the time New France was founded. All around the cobblestone square are very historic building of French and English design. One time we sat at the Maison Smith cafe, enjoying coffee and pastry at midday when the square was at its busiest. Another time was after dusk, when we sat on a bench next to King Louis XIV and enjoyed the view and people watched. So much to see and do here check it all out at all times of the day/evening. It's wonderful! When we were there, large pink balloon like babies on the buildings, done by an artist. Not sure it did anything for the ancient buildings though. See my photos

Iconic place of Quebec. Very busy part of the city with a huge fresco telling the history of the city with its characteristics and the characters who made and marked it. Some nice houses even though most are recent (our Guide gave us this info there). The atmosphere is pleasant.

Our family of 5, all adults, visited Quebec City this past month. Beautiful European style square where you can take in the architecture, history, shop, sit for a while, enjoy food and drink.

This is a beautiful old neighborhood with great architecture. It has cobblestone streets that are still used by cars, although very limited. It has a mix of restaurants and upscale shops and is artsy but not over the top. It's hilly with lots of cobblestone, so use good walking shoes!

It is a short walk of several blocks. Most cruise ship visitors spent time in Place Royale, shopping, eating, looking around, and visiting the Museum if interested. You can also take the funiculaire to the upper town and Terrace Dufferin for more interesting things to see and do. The funiculaire is $3 each way and saves many step of walking.
