This is a wonderful place- kiwis at night and all sorts of endangered birds by day. Add in a jet ski and you lose the lot. Birds flew away and ducks scarpered. I felt so let down. We went twice, once after 9pm and once during the day. Daytime we saw so few birds- saddleback, the gorgeous robins, fantails and a few tui. I get most of those in my back garden.

It is quite a trek to get to Lake Rotokare behind Eltham but it is certainly worth it. This lake has been a reserve since the late 1800's. By the beginning of the 20th century it was quite neglected until a bunch of locals decided to do something about it. Their plans expanded to include a predator free fence over 8km long. The bush has grown and the bird life come back since the fence was completed. Many volunteer hours have gone into making this reserve the wonderful place it is today.
The walk around the lake is 4km, good level tracks, There is good signage identifying the trees on the way. We went anticlockwise starting by the facilities. About the first third of the track is very good - you could take a wheel chair there. The next third (approx) the path is good but a little rough in places, some board walks. The last third is not so smooth, you have to dodge roots, there is a lot of board walk - quite narrow. But all of it is easy walking and all along the way there is bird song and birds flitting in the upper story if you take the time to stop and listen and observe. If you are a little physically challenged go around clockwise starting at the entrance just before the lake. That way you will do the more challenging part first when you are fresh and fit. How long does it take? That depends on how you like to do bush walks. For me i like to take my time and absorb the beauty of the place so it took me nearly two hours but others would easily do it in 45 minutes.

Lake Rotokare is a fantastic place to enjoy nature. You can go hiking around the lakeside, and a pontoon has been built out onto the lake to enable trout fishing, boating, and photography. It lies only 12 kilometres out of Eltham, but seems like another world entirely. It is one gem that I will be recommending to nature-lovers visiting Taranaki.

What a stunning place. We were on the road from New Plymouth to Palmerston North and decided to take a detour to the lake without knowing just how wonderful this place is. We will be back to camp Im sure, the scenery is stunning and we will enjoy the birds early morning.

Wow what an Amazing job has been done here to protect our native birds. We did the ridge climb which was a good work out on the steps. The climb down into bush to see all the birds was Amazing. Well worth visiting the lake.

We had the awesome opportunity to visit at night, and our noisy family of six managed to hear at least 10 individual kiwi shrieking! Amazing! Also we saw the koura (freshwater crayfish) in the streams and heard many ruru/moreporks. Very middy though!

The next morning I visited by myself at sunrise, and was astounded by the variety and number of native birds, including hihi/stitchbird, tieke/saddleback and whitehead/popokatea. Definitely worth walking around, the birds were very approachable and would have been easy to photograph if I had a good camera. Also make sure you check out the reeds around the lake margin for the inquisitive fernbird/matata and scaup/papango.

Five stars from me!

A great place to walk around looking for native birds. Take some time and look for stichbird, saddleback tomtit and robins if you hang around in the evening you might even be lucky to see or hear kiwi. Remember that this is a predator free zone so check your bags and car for any rats and mice before going through the predator fencing. No dogs or cats allowed.

Great day out with wife and kids on a pest free nature hike through Taranaki's beautiful lake rotokare. Suitable tramping footwear would be recommended as it was a little wet and muddy throughout parts of the track, awesome
New Zealand scenery and protected wildlife a must see for tourists and locals alike 👍🏾
