Advent market,is no longer recommended,the small children are crushed,no one takes into consideration the other,in the buses is stuffed what goes,when driving down you don't get a bus had to walk down in the darkness,and for that we paid 3€ per person for the bus,I wonder if there is any safety still guaranteed,when something happens panic breaks out.

ATTENTION!
The Advent market is not recommended with dog and/or stroller!
The shuttle bus is too packed for a stroller and does not allow dogs. You can't go up directly and the only alternative is a min. 45-minute, intensive hike with 20% gradient and the risk of being mowed down by one of the buses.
We had to give up with a small dog and stroller after 20 minutes when a bus almost forced me into a stream.
We drove over an hour from Vienna for nothing.

We visited during the Danube floods, and perhaps due to that the castle was closed (although without notice). However, the views around the castle are very pretty, so it was worth the trip

Climbing up here with the muscle bike with bags was perhaps not the best choice but the spectacular view arrived at the top paid off for all the effort. From up here you can see the Danube in all its grandeur. The ruins of the castle have been well restored. Safely via wooden staircases you reach the ramparts and what remains of the old towers. It really deserves to be visited.

We were unlucky with road works. We need to drive up the mountain with narrow stones one way road. For us, it's pretty scary because we are from the flat country, NL. Worth to see but experience driver necessary just in case you need to re-route. 30-40 mins can be done. It's way too hot there in Aug.

This castle dates back to the 12th century and is built on a narrow peak of land in the mountains. the best part of the tour is listening to Dona Seidy tell us about some of the fairytails and legends of the castle.

I didn't know that, my daughter read the entire history, fascinating. it was raided, robbed and burnt so many times during the past, it has a very nice history.
However, it has been restored and now is in good enough shape to be visited. Amazing how they buit these castles using every centimeter of the cliff was built on. You don't realize that unless you see pictures from above. See mine, attached. I also have drone videos if interested, just let me know.

Die Burgruine ist sehenswert, es fällt aber unangenehm auf, dass Senioren keine Ermäßigung gewährt wird. Vermutlich sieht man sie wegen der Unfallgefahren durch die vielen Treppen ohnehin nicht gerne auf dem Gelände.

Eine sehr eindrückliche Burgruine mit wahnsinniger Aussicht.
Wir sind mit dem Auto hochgefahren. Alternativ kann man auch hochlaufen, aber es ist doch eher steil.
Es hatte nicht besonders viele Leute und somit mussten wir nicht anstehen bzw. waren vielerorts quasi alleine.
Das ist zur Hauptsaison aber sicher anders. Der Eintrittspreis war fair und man wir mit einer super Aussicht belohnt.
Die Burg an sich ist ebenfalls eindrücklich. Einige Teile werden gerade restauriert, aber man kann trotzdem fast alles anschauen.

War in diesem Jahr nun 2x dort. Einmal mit Familie und 5-jähriger Tochter und nun einmal mit 6 Freunden zum Outdoor-Escape-Spiel. Beide Male hat es gut gepasst. Die Ruine ist eine der am schönsten erhaltenen, die ich kenne und wir sehen viele Ruinen und Burgen im Jahr ;-)
Der Eintritt ist es allemal wert, ich verstehe gegenteilige Meinungen eigentlich nicht, bei dem, was man sonst so ausgibt. In der Burgtaverne haben wir letztes Mal gegessen und diesmal ein Getränk getrunken und es hat beides gut gepasst.
Der Ausblick von der Burg ist einfach genial und es gibt tolle Wandermöglichkeiten von der Burg weg.
Das Outdoor-Escape-Spiel, welches wir mit Freunden machten war spannend, gut organisiert und preislich fair, wenn man bedenkt, dass man den Eintritt zur Burg dabei hat (108 € für 6 Personen und eine Person zahlte noch den normalen Eintritt). Was ein bisschen schwierig war, war vielleicht, dass vor allem am Samstag auch viele (kleine) Kinder in der Ruine unterwegs sind und das Spiel ab 16 Jahren ("Fluch von Aggstein") von diesen teilweise mitbekommen wird (und es ist doch eher spannend).
Ich komme immer wieder gerne!

Hello Austrian travellers and Aggstein castle staff
Please could you let me know if there is a way to take public transportation or a tour bus from Melk up to the top of the hill at Aggstein Castle? My parents would not be able to make the long trek uphill on their feet. We would like to start the bus trip or tour in Melk in early October 2019. I have not been able to find an option departing from Melk in my online searches so far.

The main road along the river is o the opposite side of the castle. It will be very hard to get to the castle There is a system of post buses that stop at a tavern/resturant at th base of the hill where It might be possible to arange for a private ride to the top. The walk is steep and over 1000 feet elevation, but if walked slowly, possible. I do not thinf there is any public transport to the top. The scenery is pleasant. but there are no places to sit I am not sure of the Post bus schedulel, but I think you can find it on some Austria websites. My grandmother lived in the ruin for a while as a child. Her father could not afford a home at the time. If you have more questions. please ask.

when was the fire damage cleaned up? What happened to the old iron stove that was in the ruins? My grandmother hid her dolls in that stove.

There was a fire the lower part of the castle, but all signs of the fire have been removed. I am probably the only person alive today who knows when and how it started and who died in that fire
