Came here as a child myself and wanted to bring my family as my elder likes history. The written information and displays are really interesting. I like how they’ve tried to bring it to life. My 7 year old loved feeding the roaming animals. However my 10 year old who loves a castle visit was too upset by the gory figures to enjoy the visit. She may have been too sensitive but I get her point of view, they are rather macabre. I wonder if it could be done a little more sensitively so all the family can enjoy and learn in an age- appropriate way. The hanging man in the noose placed centrally was hard to avoid, is it necessary? A noose alone would have given us the idea. Maybe better for over 12s.

The castle does not have it's own car park but there is public pay and display parking opposite the entrance. This car park is divided into different sections with different rules, so it's advisable to check the rules and costs in the area you park. It might be beneficial to move to another area of the car park. In the long stay section nearest the skate park it is free to park all day on a Sunday.
I felt that the admission prices, Adult - £16, Child (3-13 years) £12.50, and OAPs £14.50 was expensive. There is an additional of charge of £1 per person (all ages) to visit the Haunted Manor section of the museum. There are no family tickets or other discounts, other than those offered to school or other large groups. As Mountfitchet castle seemed somewhat of an unusual attraction we decided to visit as a one off.
From the entrance to the site there is a steep rise of steps up to the entrance to the castle itself. There is an alternative path passed the café that avoids steps but is still quite steep. The castle is constructed of wood and whilst there are some pathways it is necessary to walk over grassed areas to view all the attractions. It is necessary to climb steps in the towers but there are some good views of the site and beyond from the top, and small displays in many of them. There are upstairs sections in the toy museum that are accessed via stairs. There is an ancient horrors walk through building, that consists of narrow passages, and a low ceiling. I had to bend over to walk around most of it. There are also some steep banks to negotiate to visit some of the attractions. In summary to enjoy all the attractions fully a certain level of fitness and mobility is required.
The Norman Village has tableaus in the buildings demonstrating aspects of Norman life often with commentary. Fire pits around the site add an element of aroma and atmosphere. Throughout the site there are interactive displays, e.g. trying to hit targets using a cross bow or other weaponry. Within the museum there is the opportunity to try on wartime helmets or to try (at additional cost) old arcade games.
On the path to the museum there are models of various dinosaurs. One of which has a surprise for visitors as they pass.
There are goats and deer within the site that are happy to eat food from visitors hands. Food bags can be purchased from the entrance/shop for £2 a bag.
There are picnic tables available and toilets near the café and in the museum. There is something to see/do for all ages. We visited as a couple and stayed for over 3 hours and would allow even longer if we had been accompanied by children. As such it could be argued that an entrance fee of £32 for a couple is reasonable. But £57 for a family of 2 adults and 2 children, an additional £4 to visit the haunted Manor and £2 per bag of feed, would make for an expensive family day out.
We had eaten before visiting so can not make any comment as to the café.

Better than I expected! We went with our toddler just for somewhere different, and we all enjoyed the couple of hours there. Toddler was loving running around the outside exhibitions with the free roaming animals. Partner loved the toy museum, and got very nostalgic. Felt like a place you’d visit on a school trip, so as adults this added to the nostalgia,
It is very steep in places but we made it round with a pushchair ok.
Only let down was the food situation. Very limited on offer and not gluten-free friendly- I had a choice of something in a shop-bought GF small bun, wish I’d just popped over to the Co-Op. And there was very limited seating unless you’re happy outside.

A fun and interesting historical day out! There was a fun trail for the kids to complete and get a little prize. Loads of interesting things to see and do to find out about life in a Norman Castle. Perfect for all ages.

For locals who haven’t been or anyone who’s new to the area who wants to have a quick dash somewhere for a little trip then Mountfitchet Castle isn’t a bad bet but the whole place is tiny and lack of things to see and do here. The setting is nice though all the green grass and the hill the castle is on.

Great day out for the family, easy to get to & lots to do and see there. Our little one is 6 and enjoyed it, especially the interactive bits where you run the flour mill & shoot the slingshots etc. would recommend for a family day out! Feeding the animals was great too, super friendly and nice to get really up close with animals that can just wander freely. The kids scavenger hunt was great too, added an extra something to keep them going! The toy museum was super cool too, really something there for everyone.

We'd seen the signs for this place a few times so finally decided to take the plunge and visit. There is a large car park that costs £1 to park for 2 hours right next to the entrance.
The entrance fee seemed quite steep at £14 for an adult and we were only there for an hour but that being said we were impressed enough to arrange a return visit with our grand daughter. This is definitely a place for family visits.
There are lots of information boards to read about life in the Norman period and how society worked. There are also interactive exhibits to fire catapults, crossbows etc in a safe environment. The wooden castle reconstruction seemed well done within my knowledge of the period and the inclusion of additional buildings and areas within the castle walls made it seem like a proper fortified encampment rather than just a military building. The animals were friendly and another nice touch to bring the realism of the period to the site.
