Seriously struggle to understand why a Parish Council penalise electric vehicle drivers, charges are 60p kWH when other authorities charges are on average 28p kWH, (at home you pay 6.7p kWH), it’s the equivalent of charging £5 a litre for petrol. Given the charging points are funded through government grants, the charges are extortionate and immoral. Made worse they make you pay for parking. It is this mindset that falls the EV conversion in the UK.

Given the role of a local authority the parish councillors should be ashamed of themselves.

Great walk with fantastic views. We walked up anti clockwise and in parts it was hard going but worth it once at the summit.

We chose the best day weather wise as wouldn’t have wanted to do this walk in the rain or heat! Very windy in parts. Make sure you’re prepared with water, snacks and walking boots!
We chose not to go via the ‘scramble’ route and so glad we didn’t. Paths are uneven/rocky and coming down could be classed as hard as going up but what a feeling when you reach the top.

We did this walk with our 2 teen daughters going anti clockwise from Horton.
This is a great walk. Really good views. Clearly signposted. Mostly good paths with some short scrambling required on the pennine way section. Take your time and you'll be fine - my wife isn't massively confident but did it OK.
Take the small diversion (15 mins) to check out Hull Pot. It's a spectacularly big hole! If there had been lots of rain there would be a waterfall here. It's off to the right on the way down just before you start on the "lane" to Horton.

Really wasn’t sure I wanted to do this, after reading about the ‘scramble’ but, sometimes you need to face those fears. For the most it was a typical hill/fell walk, helped by a path and A LOT of steps. Fantastic views all the way. We did the anti clockwise route, definitely the way to go. Well out of my comfort zone scrambling over the rocks, but an amazing sense of achievement once at the top.

This was our first visit to the 3 peaks, so see this review from a novices point of view.
We stayed nearby in Horton in Ribblesdale in our Motorhome. After reading many reviews were were unsure of the best route to take. Most recommended anti clockwise but opinions on the scramle near the top varied from " My 6 year old did it" to terrifying.
I'm 55 and my level of walking is 5-10 miles max but usually along a beach or flat. I still don't know how easy the scramble is as we thought best to play it safe and avoid it.
So the plan we made was to go up on the clockwise side and back down the same way. Firstly we went to Hull Pot, I'm glad we did. We then decided to continue to Pen Y ghent with the option to turn back at anytime. The wather was nice for April and we checked before setting off and wasn't supposed to rain untill 4.
Once we saw a sign that said 1 3/4 miles we were kinda commited as it isn't that far. About half a mile from the top it was cloudy, the wind was very strong and then it rained. We carried on regardless to the top. Walking down we had the wind and rain head on.
I thought we had all the gear but I was wrong. We both had good walking boots and good quality raincoats. Trousers and the wifes backpack with a rain cover let us down.
We walked back with very wet feet and legs, as we decended the weather got kinder. When we returned to the camper even my underpants were wet.
We learnt many things. Never trust the weather forecast, even the met office 3 peaks one. Pack waterproof trousers and study how to keep feet dry.
Despite the rain and lack of kit we had an amazing day out and are not put off, in fact we are looking forward to doing another peak having stocked up on waterproof trousers etc.
I wouldn't say that the walk was easy but then wouldn't say that it was difficult. My leg did start aching on the walk and the following day I wasn't too bad at all although my legs knew thay had been used.

Pen-y-Ghent was a triumph, 90 miles into the Spine Challenger South Race at 2am on Sunday night. The blistering wind felt bone chillingly cold. I think I saw a shooting star as I scrambled to the top in what was a breathtaking celestial display on a crisp and clear pitch black sky but it might have been a sleep deprived hallucination.

The track into Horton-in-Ribblesdale along the Pennine Way was icy and stoney, my poor feet. Maybe an escalator on the next refurb.

But the true triumph of the adventure were the public toilets in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. It was 4am, I was exhausted, cold and hungry. The toilets provided an ideal 5 star sleeping opportunity. It was out with the sleeping mat, sleeping bag and bivvy. A tin of rice pudding provided cordon bleu sustenance. The water tap, an endless supply of refreshment that Greek gods would die for.

I had two blissful hours of sleep that the left me feeling refreshed and raring to go along the delightful Cam Road into Hawes.

What made the experience even more exciting was the celebrity spotting in the public toilets. One of the Spine leaders who shall remain nameless overtook me, a humble Spine Challenger as I lay slumbered. He joyfully skipped over my sleeping bag bound morass into the cubicle. Suffice to say he had musical ablutions, his extra skip as he bounded over me and onwards was an indication of the blistering pace ahead.

The public toilets at Horton-in-Ribblesdale are the jewel in the crown of any trip along the Pennine Way or ascent of Pen-y-Ghent.

I say make the them a UNESCO site of historical importance.

If Shakespeare was alive today I suspect Hamlet would be regarded as a secondary work after he penned a history play dedicated to these fine public toilets.

Climbed this with my dog on a brilliantly hot summers day . Was a long drive, found a parking spot easily, locating the starting point was more tricky. Long walk out up over fields of sheep. Finally arrived at base of the stone cliff like section, was tricky with the dog but an elderly local lady appeared behind me and showed me the way up otherwise I fear I may have given up . The views down the other side are wonderful, spotted the deepest hole in England . I was a little stressed at times on my own but Tyson certainly enjoyed it

1. Walk early, or walk late. The former to get a parking place before the busy period and catch the wonderful morning light. The latter to get a parking place after the busy period and catch the wonderful evening light. Both options will be less busy on the hill.

2. If driving, although there is a Yorkshire Dales National Park car park, it isn’t huge. Parking for enough time to enjoy the walk costs £5.00, and there are toilets on site. There is another option at the pub to the south side of Horton, by the church. Parking on the roadside is discouraged; much of the road is double yellow lined, and although some people park on the verges, it always seems a bit cheapskate to us when other options are available that support the National Park or the local economy.

3. It’s a glorious, classic walk, in whichever direction you choose. We prefer the anticlockwise direction starting through Brackenbottom. The ascent is shorter, sharper and the scramble up the south flank is easier and more fun to tackle than the scrabbly descent. In either direction, the south flank is a bit exposed.

4. There are numerous places on the southern ascent within the crags to enjoy your coffee / tea / sandwiches / cake / buns or whatever. They offer lovely views, particularly to the south and east, and it’s easy to seek some protection if it’s windy. The summit tends to be busier, the views less striking, and if it is busy, less protected from the elements.

5. The Horton Cafe is closed. However, we strongly recommend the Middle Studfold Farm Tea Room just a couple of miles to the south (reviewed separately). All a walker could want on the menu, and wonderful service.

Awesome walk up Pen Y Ghent with my two kids - aged 11 and 10. It was our first attempt at going up a mountain and I’d say it was pretty successful. I checked a lot of the reviews and took the anti-clockwise route, which I’d also strongly recommend. Both kids absolutely loved the scrambling. It definitely added to the excitement, but we were all pleased we were going up this part, not coming down. One of the kids is prone to being a bit nervous, but she really enjoyed it. The walk down is longer and not as exhilarating - but really it’s all about getting to the peak. On the way up, it does take some effort and we realised we had too many clothes on - I’d recommend taking an extra rucksack to put coats etc in when you’re getting too hot (but it was quite a mild day for October).

All in all, an excellent activity for the family.
