Disappointed in whole visit. Tranquil place but weeds everywhere and generally unkempt - there is a big difference between natural and just untidy! Ensure you take your own refreshments as cafe is limited and service a joke.
Please don’t waste your money visiting this garden.

We visited Mintern Gardens on an unsettled chilly day but was rewarded with a spectacular display of many varieties of rhododendron and wildflowers on our walk through the gardens. Highly recommended

We have just returned from a wedding held at Minterne House. Wow! The grounds, views, and atmosphere were picture perfect, as was the ambience of the house itself. The wedding breakfast was set in the main room off the entrance hall and was stunning. It felt such a privilege to be there and when we bumped into Sarah, she was charming, informative about the history of the family and house (history is my passion) and we were made to feel welcome and valued!

The Himalayan Tea Terrace was another delight as the cakes are home made and portions generous. The coffee was excellent, as was the tea, and the scones for the cream tea as good as my own (which are excellent!) It was a treat to cut into a warm scone... whilst sitting overlooking the stunning view. We returned this morning to have a last treat before setting off for home. There was nothing but praise for Minterne House, the wedding organiser and staff from the parents of the bride and groom - and the bride and groom themselves. Everything seemed to be perfect from a guest's perspective and we thoroughly enjoyed this special celebration. Sad it's all over...

I first went to Minterne about 25 years, ago, when I lived at Cerne Abbas,on a cold March day, and thought it was lovely, then..However, since then, a lot of rhododedrons, and additional trees and plants, have been planted, and others matured, to have grown to their maximum perfection..I strongly advise a trip in mid-May, when they reach peak-flowering.
I went about a fortnight ago,( try around May 10th) and it was a lush jungle of colour, and an effortless mix of beautiful old English native park /woodland, trees and plants, and the beautiful rhododendrons, peiris, palms, the japanese maples, and other lovely shrubs..
The walk winds along a riverside path, which is also planted with lovely candeabra primulas,in stunning colours..there are also a lot of native wildflowers and plants, that blend effortlessly together..I don't like to use phrases like "Magical wonderland" but honestly,I didn't know what to look at,first..
Literally, every step reveals more wonders, whether it's the stunning old trees, drifts of ransomes and soloman's seal, underfoot, the ridiculously beautiful rhododendrons,or the stunning ferns, primulas, and irises along the riverside..
There are gentle cascades and tinkly little waterfalls, there are pretty little bridges -there are so many perfect scenes to just stop and admire,it'll take you ages to get round, because you will want to keep stopping..
Allow yourself at least an hour ( I did 3 hours, the first time) or more, just to wander about taking it in..The paths are well maintained, but there are slightly boggy-areas,and a little mud ( it's been a wet winter) so do wear something sensible on your feet,if the weather's been damp ( it's a riverside-walk,the area is naturally on the boggy-side) There are benches and seats, dotted around,if you need to take a break..
There is honestly,so much to see here,I struggle to fit in comfortably into one review that won't run to a small-book..
From the entrance, you proceed up a short drive,to the house, where there you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, and some cake ( go on,you might as well!) on the outdoor-terrace, the view from here is worth it,alone?
You'll look out onto a perfect scene of beautiful, parkland, with a lake,swans-are-provided,and there are currently a brace of white unicorns ( horns are removed for patron's safety during the Season) grazing below the ha-ha, at the lake's edge, for your further delectation....as if you need it,if your eye is tired from gazing at the chestnut-tree in full bloom, and the beautiful maples..
Bees buzz in the wisteria along the balustrade, swallows swoop across the wildflower-dotted pasture, blackbirds are busy gardening in the grass, pigeons coo-drowsily in the tree-tops,a crafty robin alights the balustrade,at the Terrace, and might be looking for a bit of your scone..?....That's how they roll,at Minterne?
Highlights in the Gardens, for me, are the Gunneras,in various places, the ferns and the primulas, and the lovely acers and a really ancient London Plane, tucked away....the fantastic rhododendrons speak for themselves..
Look out for the beautiful "monet style" bridge, near the Pagoda ( yes, there's a pagoda..) and the graceful, mellow stone Eleanor's Bridge, not far from which,is an elegant wisteria covered pergola..
I could go on, but we'll be here, all day.Entrance fee is a measly tenner, frankly, it's the best tenner you'll spend this week.
I should also like to add, that as a Carer,I am admitted free entry, via a local- council sanctioned scheme, as a card carrier, I am entitled to free entry, at Minterne?
It says much, that the ONLY time I have used it, is at Minterne Gardens..but would happily pay a tenner, and come time, and time again..Dogs are welcome,on leashes, and I think there are enough things for children to look at and enjoy..I went on my tod,if you take soemone else, you miss half of it,pointing and talking..I had to go back on my own, this-week it rained, and was cold, foggy and miserable-and it was still stunning..Go,now.It's well worth it and I can't recommend it,highly enough.

We adore Minterne Magna's gardens and are frequent visitors. You have to start the season around early April when the rhododendrons start to emerge, and then return every week to see them progress. By mid-May they are almost at their peak - huge explosions of colour around every corner. Wandering around the gardens at a slow amble is a complete joy, with benches situated at perfect viewing positions. It is sad when the rhododendrums finally finish but the gardens are gently beautiful all year round.

Finish off at the Terrace Cafe where they have the perfect pots of tea with home-baked cakes as well as a lovely menu if you prefer something more savoury. Lovely staff and, joy of joys, free parking! I would suggest you cross the road by the carpark entrance - much safer.

It was a little bit overpriced at £10 but we enjoyed our walk. Paths were in decent condition but got a bit soggy, no wildflowers in the wildflower meadow but lots of rhododendron. Pleasant way to spend an hour.

The house looks beautiful from the outside, and I expect the gardens are much more impressive at other times of the year. We paid £30 to walk through rather dull woodland though and it didn't feel like good value. I think they ought to consider lowering the prices off season.

Camellias, Rhododendrons, Daffodils and Magnolias abound. An intimate garden which shares borrowed views from the surrounding parkland makes for an enjoyable visit at this time of the year. The tea room terrace has a selection of hot and cold treats.

We are regular visitors. Excellent place to wind down whatever time of the year. Lovely food as well. Friendly staff. It is worth having a season ticket to go different times of the year.

We have been going to Minterne for Halloween for a few years but this may well be our last. The basics of an excellent garden “experience” are all there but the problem is that the grounds and facilities suffer from chronic under investment and a lack of creative flair. It shouldn’t take much to turn this around but until they do, Minterne will likely disappoint- as they are basically living on fumes. The garden is inadequately maintained and they just do not do enough to encourage visitors to return. They need to look to the likes of Abbotsbury or NT properties for inspiration. Ultimately they need to decide what they are- a sophisticated garden, a tea room or a children’s venue? Trying to do everything on the cheap is a recipe for failure.
