This aqueduct is unique and we longed for it to open - seeing a ship in the Manchester canal below in the distance we hoped it would! Not easy to moor up and walk over the footbridge but I think we got the gist.

When the Duke of Bridgewater decided to build the canal between Liverpool and Manchester huge swathes of land were cleared. To do so meant intricate and accurate sketches and plans and I have recently found out that a distant relative was the architect drawer, Great knowing that what he drew is still a vital cog in the industry of Manchester

The Barton Swing Aqueduct is easy to find using the directions provided on Trip Advisor. There are two parking areas on either side of Redclyffe Road. There are more spaces on Old Barton Road, the aqueduct is across the street on Chapel Place. It is a small walk from where ever you park to the aqueduct. There is an abandoned building in front of the aqueduct which is interesting to look at. Go around that, next to the river and you can climb the stairs and get some good shots of the aqueduct. Use caution as the stairs are a little rotted, but still manageable to climb. You can stand above and right in front of the aqueduct from this view.

All Saints Roman Catholic Church is on Old Barton Road, and there is a cemetery behind that. I would visit the cemetery and the aqueduct in the daytime as there are some very sketchy characters that hang around the area. The cemetery is unfortunately covered with used condoms and alcohol containers, so please watch your step. When we walked out of it there were ladies that were dressed like prostitutes, smoking dope next to the small park in front of the river. I still think it is worth seeing this site, just keep your wits about you.

Seems to be neglected in the last 5 years with no money spent on it. It is a testament to Victorian engineering prowess and part of our local heritage. More effort should be make to fund repair and maintenance work to this landmark. I believe that the canal part is the only swing aqueduct in the world.

What is apparently a unique structure in the world is in need of some tlc. It carries canal boats on a slice of the Bridgewater canal over the main Manchester Ship Canal.
It is a fantastic idea that operates regularly to carry boats across the larger ship canal. However the paint is peeling and the tow path is covered in rubbish and the spoils of fly tipping.
It remains however unique and worth a bit of time to visit.

When you live so close to something it is all too easy to take it for granted. There are two swing bridges crossing at this point, the Aqueduct and the "normal" swing bridge that carries traffic over.
The swing bridge is heavily used & is looking it's age. This bridge gets stuck at least once every summer until the fire brigade sort it. Then there are the times you get 'bridged' when it swings open for a ship. 99 times out of 100 this will be when you are running late! Given that, it is very easy to take the aqueduct for granted as 'the other bridge,'the one that doesn't hold you up!
It is only when you see the boats going over that you remember just how remarkable it is. If you drive or walk down Barton Road heading towards the bridges, you can see the entrance to the aqueduct & how the Bridgewater canal swings left. Carrying on just before you approach the bridges (a busy box junction) if you look left, you will get a better view of the structure
. There is a tiny but very pretty public space known as Pocket Park, awash with wild at flowers in the summer, also to the immediate left of the traffic lights/junction. There are steps down to the paved area. This is the closest you can come to the aqueduct without being on a boat. Parking may be a problem, but if you drive over the bridge and take the first right you can park there and walk back should you wish to.
I don't think it is worth a special journey, but if you are visiting the Trafford Centre it is worth a quick look.

The Swing Aqueduct and Road Bridge are side by side and have been opening and closing for 125 years. The nominally 100 metre long lattice steel bridge structures pivot in the centre to turn through 90 degrees to enable ships to travel up and down the Manchester Ship Canal while allowing narrow boats to travel along the Bridgewater Canal without the need for locks to change level. The only modernisation has been the change from steam power to electricity. These Important elements enabled efficient transportation of cotton cargoes to Manchester.

Brilliant feat of engineering for the time it was built, I have seen it swing several times over the years

A masterpiece of Victorian engineering, still working. If you're lucky enough, like we were, you can see as they turn it.

Quite why I have given this the rating I have I don't quite know.
It might be that it is a fascinating feat of engineering that is still in perfect working order and is above a picturesque stretch of water.
I also used to curse it as a contraption that made me late for work on numerous occasions when I worked at The Trafford Centre.
In another strange way, you didn't seem to mind when it happened if you were on the bus or stood close by when it was being lifted. It is amazing to see it in action.
