Excellent place to visit! The tour guide was brilliant and made the experience worth every penny. I liked holding the lantern also made it extra special.

Nice big free car park, a good shop selling wartime and cave items, helpful staff, and an excellent cafe. The trip down the caves was really good, but perhaps not for the infirm. The guide made it very interesting - though he was quiet and so we had difficulty hearing him sometimes.

Fantastic family visit, as a family we enjoyed this more than anticipated and would absolutely recommend. The guide Peter was awesome, really engaging and spent the time to talk to us after the tour had finished. Could have listened to him for hours.

Nostalgia is a thing if the past. Visited the caves this weekend after my last visit in 1966 when Jimmy Hendricks played there. Excellent guided tour and at £6 per head for “oldies” great value for money. Probably won’t leave it 50 odd years before my next visit when I take my grandson down there

Went inside Chislehurst Caves for the first time recently, I was absolutely mesmerised and could hardly speak it was so breathtaking! Our wonderful tour guide Maria made it a very interesting and magical experience with that wonderfully loud voice!
Can not wait to visit again child free so I can take more time to look at things in detail!
Hopefully visiting again soon with my best friend! Wonderfully run by really interesting and kind people, thankyou!

I visited the caves as a child and had wonderful memories which I wanted to share with my daughter so that she could experience it too. I therefore booked us onto a tour with my mum and looked forward to reliving my youth. It's true what they say, some things are best left in the past.
To start off with, the tour guide informed us the caves are not caves because they are man made. So no Saxon or Roman heritage to be found. I distinctly remember being shown a druid altar as a child, and they still sell a postcard of it in the shop (with a ghost druid) so I'm not sure when the narrative changed but it left me feeling deflated.
The tour itself was rubbish. I don't know why we spent so long standing in tunnels looking at nothing. I wasn't impressed by the echo display, I mean you're standing in an underground tunnel system, of course there will be echoes and I could have done without the singing and chanting from the guide. We spent so long in the tunnels listening to nothing informative that we then had to speed round the interesting sights!
I see the guide has good reviews on here and I don't want to name him because maybe he was having a bad day but I didn't come to the caves to listen to him pontificating about his life. The sole purpose of a tour guide is to impart useful knowledge about the site to your visitors, not naval gaze about your own childhood. At the lake, he shared the story about the ghost lady. All good and I remembered the story. I didn't expect him to go on and share how he wouldn't turn a lady down who was coming towards him with open arms. He quickly commented about wanting a hug but seriously?! I didn't find it funny, I found it inappropriate and weird.
So would I recommend visiting? I think on balance I would. It's very good value and there are interesting things to see such as the chapel, the lake and the dorms etc. I would imagine seeing it for the first time would leave a better impression than returning after some years. My daughter however did not enjoy it at all, which is unusual as she absolutely loves Fort Amherst. My mum didn't enjoy it either but she used one word to describe it and I can't use it here. The toilets are nice and clean too.

The caves and their history make for an interesting 50 minutes.
But be warned that much of the walking surface is uneven and if your shoes are not appropriate, or you're not too steady on feet, you can easily get left behind the group. This happened to us for the middle part of the tour and it was frightening to be alone in a dark tunnel when you've lost sight of the group.
Also a major gripe is that the cafe appears to close after the 3pm tour. If you're on the last 4pm tour as we were (and arrive in good time as you're told to), you will be unable to get a cup of tea/drink while you wait.

The tour is approx. 1hr long and very interesting, didn't feel as long as that though, I could easily have spent 1.5-2hrs. The carvings and paintings are brilliant, old and new, its a shame they cant hold events there any longer as its very atmospheric and would be great for small gigs. The still life scenes are creepy but really good, as was the kind (good not creepy). It was a bit cold but its to be expected underground, also weather was awful. Which brings me to the excellent little cafe- an outstandingly good bowl of french onion soup with bread and cheese (cheese and toast would be a great option too) followed by a piece of lime cheesecake and an espresso. Id go back just to visit the little cafe tbh as its really tasty and fairly priced.

It was my daughters birthday treat with 7 of my grandchildren ranging in age 2 to 12. Peter our guide was very calm and informative on the history of the Caves. He sang Happy Birthday to my daughter which echoed through the Caves. After our tour he spent time talking to the grandchildren showing them how to light the flint. We enjoyed our day out. Thank you Peter.

How do you go down? Steps or lift? Is it narrow? Is it crowded? I am a bit claustrophobic and I would like to be prepared as not to panic on the day. Thank you

I agree with the last comment. It’s quite big down there. It wasn’t crowded when we went at the end of the day. There is a part where the lights are turned out to show the sound levels.
