Our driver Tomás took us from Ixtapa to this quaint museum. Worth the trip. Very interesting history about the pyramids in this area. Still some pyramids buried but no money to excavate.

We had an outstanding visit to this museum and surrounding archeological sites. This museum is a gem. It's incredibly informative, interesting and beautiful. We learned so much about the rich history of the region. I am absolutely thrilled we had a chance to experience all that this wonderful museum has to offer! A must see for anyone visiting Ixtapa!!

It took me a while to find this place, as it is not well-advertised, but the search was worth it. The museum itself is a small but modern building that holds a variety of artifacts from across the timeline of the ancient city of Xihuacan, upon which it sits. The museum curator, Adán, who often doubles as a guide, takes a keen personal interest in Xihuacan and in Mexican ancient history in general. If he's there when you are, definitely ask him for a tour (although note that he speaks very little English). Adán is a born storyteller and brings every piece in the museum to life.
Once you've made it through the museum itself, you'll be taken to some of the sites wherein many of the artifacts were found. Just down the road, you'll walk through the old ball court and up onto one of the central pyramids of the former city. Much is still being excavated, so this is a site that is likely to change yearly.
Petatlán, the village that now occupies the site of Xihuacan, makes for an interesting visit. The ground is littered with potsherds and other fragments of Xihuacan. People regularly turn up all manner of artifacts in their homes and yards. Many of them will be quite happy to show them to you. On our tour, Adán brought us to his house, to show us some pieces that he was hoping to showcase in other museums.
Getting there: Unless you book a trip through a tour agency in Ixtapa, you can find Petatlán and Xihuacan (also known as la Soledad de Maciel) by following the main highway south from Zihuatanejo and diverging left to stay on the main highway, bound for Acapulco. The highway becomes single lane in either direction after the divergence and you'll drive for roughly 20 minutes before seeing a large sign advertising la Soledad de Maciel. The sign doesn't give you much time to make the very immediate right turn, so it pays not to drive very fast here.
Bottom line: despite being smaller in scale and grandeur than many other sites, Xihuacan is a beautiful and interesting place to visit. Totally worth it.
