Beautiful scenery - a medium grade slope walk. Not a lot of car parking up the hill where the track starts.

We did this easily late one afternoon. A bit of a climb, but certainly manageable by people with modest fitness, if you take your time. The final climb up the rock requires a little more effort to pull yourself up using the very handy chains that have been installed in the rock. But the view is magnificant. Highly recommend this.

this was a must do on our north trip - grateful and thankful - gorgeous walk up and the rewards are plenty - I am personally petrified of heights but was determined (with amazing coaxing from my whanau especially 20 year old son) to master the chains and height - just sooooooooooooo beautiful - the rock formations - amazing art of nature

Went for a walk up the rock one evening. The weather was a bit dull and very windy but still an enjoyable walk. Beware that when it’s dry the path is quite slippery so take good walking shoes and walking poles if you have dodgy knees!

This is a great climb that gives you 360 degree views from the top.
There is vehicle parking close to the start of the walk.
The walk to the base of the rock is reasonably easy with a couple of steeper parts. These could be slippery if it had rained recently.
Once you get to the base of the rock you could be forgiven if you felt you didn’t think you would make it to the top. But please give it a try, using the chains it’s not nearly as hard as it looks.
And once you’re at the top you’ll be thankful you made the effort.
The views are amazing and well worth the effort.

Short walk uphill. Magnificent views of Whangaroa Harbour. The volcanic rock uplifted creating a wall around the harbour is well worth a visit. Climb St Paul's and see it all.

Definitely worth the walk.
Amazing views 360 degrees of whangaroa harbor and surrounding areas. Quite a tough walk if you aren't fit. But well worth it.

This walk but be 15 minutes each way, no more but wow do you get some incredible views in that time.

You almost drive most of the height and pull up along side the road as it comes to a cul-de-sac. From there it's a short walk and I mean a short walk. 10-15 minutes tops to the top. It's not a race, don't rush and wear yourself out! Take your time and keep checking behind you at the views you're greeted with. There's a rock face you have to navigate, usually with the help of the chain drilled into it, but once you're past it you're pretty much at the top.

Once you're at the top you'll be greeted with 360 views, most of which is the stunning Whangaroa Harbour and small inlets. On a sunny day this view is stunning. I can only imagine what it must look like at a sunrise or a sunset. Definitely will be coming back to see one of those.

St Paul's Rock is a very accessible view point above the stunning Whangaroa Harbour. It only requires a medium fitness level to walk and for the final bit climb to the top. If you're in the area it's definitely worth doing. You drive up above the trees and start the walk through paddocks. The prominent landmark was given the name by British explorers in the early 1800s because of the strong resemblance to the dome of London's St Paul's Cathedral. Looking down from the top of the rock you will see the small Red Island where the English ship Boyd sunk in 1809, after most of the crew and passengers were killed by Maori. The remnants of the ship were discovered in the late 1960s by legendary New Zealand divers Kelly Tarlton and Wade Doak.
