Me and my boyfriend first stumbled across this lovely pub in 2018 we had been to Stanhope on a dog walk - yes it’s dog friendly that’s only one of the reasons we love it so much! (we are from Sunderland so it’s a good hour and abit drive from us) ... We go quite regularly (but I’ve just got trip advisor and I needed to leave a review)
Our most latest visit was Sunday 16th February for the 2nd sitting of Sunday lunch (they do 2 sittings on a Sunday) it did not disappoint the beef was cooked to perfection the veg was lovely ... the best part was the homemade apple crumble. Wow. Just wow. It makes my mouth water thinking back.
I’d recommend this pub if you are wanting a nice Sunday drive out through Durham there is a lovely footpath just across the bridge (opposite the black bull inn) it takes you through some fields then back down the river it takes about an hour then it brings you back into the village. We love it. My favourite dog walk!
In the carpark as well there is a little egg hut - there you put your money in a money box and take some of the locally hatched eggs.
My only wish is that I lived closer to this pub because I’ve never tried the nighttime menu - they have a pizza night advertised I bet they are lovely.
The pub is homely, warm and the staff are so pleasant. Love it :)

Enjoyed a fabulous meal with friends. Every meal was delicious. What a fabulous atmosphere, we’ll almost definitely be back.

This is a very cosy traditional old pub in a delightful village setting. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming of us and our little dogs. We all order different meat choice from the Sunday lunch menu and were all really pleased with the quality and quantity of our meals. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for delicious Sunday roast in a delightful little spot.

We are regular attenders thanks to the warm welcome and good food and beer. Good option for vegetarians every day including Sunday. Good selection of local ales. Dogs are welcome much to the delight of our cockerpoo.

Very cosy in the winter months with open log fires, on a Thursday afternoon you can get tea and scones. There are many activities going on from music to vintage car exhibitions just telephone the pub and they will tell you what they have planned

This was a family birthday celebration. We'd booked for 7.00 on a Thursday evening.
We were the only people there. Although the fire was on it lacked ambience. The drinks and food we thought were over priced, the Weardale lamb came shredded and moulded. It could have been anything. Portion sizes were poor and the food was on the cool side. I had the distinct impression, given the empty building and not much activity in the kitchen, that the whole menu was pre-made and warmed through on the night. There was no children's menu.
Another couple came in to eat around a hour later plus a local who worked behind the bar who said it was quiz night which didn't start until 9.00.
What a poor experience in an overated pimped up pub.

Lunch for 3 was totally satisfactory except for the custard. Weak, thin and minimally tasty.

We visited The Black Bull in Frosterley with friends and had a beautiful Sunday lunch. The food was mouth-watering and the service impeccable. The place itself is so full of character - it was a perfect Sunday afternoon.

After reading the reviews on the premises' own website and a personal recommendation from an acquaintance, we booked several weeks ago for our wedding anniversary. We paid a £4 premium for the Sirloin Beef (£15.95) expecting it to be special. However, when the meal was served we looked at our plates, expecting the vegetables to be served separately. Sadly, it soon became apparent that the maximum 2 tablespoons each of chopped mixed carrot/turnip and savoy cabbage /? unidentifiable veg were the only vegetables we were getting. These came alongside some extremely slushy mash and 3 small chunks of roast potatoes ( which were actually the best part of the meal), a decent Yorkshire pudding, and one slice of beef which had inedible gristle/skin/fat attached and was quite tough. A jug of gravy completed this 'feast'. We really feel that this should be highlighted to others so that they are not caught out as we were and charged an exorbitant price for a such a mediocre meal. Maybe the usual chef was not working that day, but surely there should be someone to monitory the quality of the meals they are serving at such a premium? Also, be aware that if you use the ladies toilet, you will have to wait until the cistern has refilled in order to get a little trickle of cold water to wash your hands! We are sorry to have to post such a negative review, but feel that others ought to be forewarned.

What a find! Visiting Weardale for the first time. Booked on the day and could not believe that this is in Weardale. A great “country pub” feel. The menu offers a choice which would challenge the best Gastro pubs/ restaurants. We had a fantastic meal with a good selection of house brewed beer and wines. Definitely worth a return visit.

Hi. Black Bull is definitely dog friendly - we take our 2 to pizza night on Thursdays and sometimes for Sunday lunch after a walk. Rarely are they the only dogs there. I did take Dad to pub in his wheelchair and managed but it's tight and toilets are not accessible because of age of building. Hope this helps.
