My daughter and I went for a hike there today. We stopped by the office to get advice. The young man working there today was very helpful and friendly. The washrooms were clean and had hand santizer. We ended up doing a 3 km hike near Doe Lake . Beautiful forest with lots of wild spring flowers.

We did a multi-day canoe trip in the Park in the 1980s. I was quite impressed, but never felt the urge to return, especially having moved from Ottawa to Toronto. But more recently returned to the Park for some late fall hiking. And came to realize what a gem it is -- especially the hiking on the east side of the Park -- lots of beautiful topography -- great views from the trails and lookouts. Some of the best hiking in the Province -- up there with Killarney . Also have to give a shout-out for Erica in the Park office who is incredibly helpful in providing advice on routes, access and what to look for.

Frontenac provincial park is a must see place, all season. Must reserve up to 3 or 5 days just for hiking

We hike Frontenac every year, and this year we’re doing the the Frontenac Trek challenge. The trails are so beautiful and vary in ease or difficulty. We’ve also kayaked some of the lakes. The peace and quiet is glorious and autumn offers a riot of gorgeous Canadian colours. We make sure to go a few days after a heavy rainfall so mud holes have dried up some but it’s adventurous going around them regardless. Our one complaint is the poor signage. Signs indicate campsite locations, but not distance, nor the name of the particular loop you’re on or looking for. Make sure you always bring a Park map.

Trail was just OK. The signs are confusing as they point in both directions, which gives hard time esp especially if somehow you go out of the way

Headed up for a hike this week at Frontenac Park. They have very easy trails and boardwalks near the park office and toilets open. We went for a hike further into park and walked back on a park road for less difficult walk back. Lovely quiet day.

We had a spare day and drove less than an hour outside of Kingston to visit Frontenac provincial park. Arriving around 8:30 AM we went to the Parks office to get a map and permit and did an amazing hike for several hours through beautiful forest. We came across many picturesque lakes and Beaver dams. Even on a long weekend we saw no one on the trail.
We went on to rent kayaks and canoes but even if you only have 1/2 day a visit to Frontenac Provincial Park is worth it.

We walked the Arab Lake Gorge Trail - a walk along a boardwalk through the gorge and wetlands area, then you make your way up to the ridge for the return hike. It was our first time, and we vowed to return.
I can't wait to see the park for spring flowers, again in summer's full glory and a last time for the colour changes in fall. And next time we'll explore more of the 11km looping trails in the park.

I participated in the Fall Frontenac Challenge - in completing the 11 loops I had the chance to see portions of the park that I had not seen before. The Park is a place of true beauty. Peaceful, quiet, with visits from various wildlife. I had short visits with other hikers, campers and canoes. All were enjoying the tranquil, laidback pace that nature offers. In meeting staff from the Park I had only positive experiences. They treat you with the utmost respect and truly make you feel welcome.

As soon as I arrived and checked in with the park staff, I turned around and was greeted by a white-tail deer. Right then, I realized this park was something else.
I had done a little research before booking. I wanted a park that was easy to drive to, had backcountry that was hike-able and interesting features. Frontenac check off all of those and more.
Frontenac is one of the few parks within 2hours of Toronto that offers hiking and canoeing options. More over, it offers a combination of the two with some interesting portage routes. Not being a canoer, that doesn't interest me much, but I appreciate the option.
Being a hiker, I like the interesting waypoints and lookouts this park offers. There's the Mink Lake lookout; the Clear Lake lookout; various ruins and abandoned homesteads; plus much more. As someone who feels gross after a few sweaty hours of hiking, the easily accessed waters of the various lakes provide ample water sources and easy cool-downs. Most lakes are clear to a depth of 6-10feet and appear to have minimal tannins. This is key as it means your water purification will be generally easier.
For my visit, my hiking partner and I did the Big Salmon Lake loop. I would consider the two sides of the lake as entirely different routes. The South side of the loop has a few steep and narrow sections, giving it a moderate to intermediate feel. The north side is touch easier to navigate, with a large stretch of it being nice and wide - great for group hiking.
Regardless of where you are in the park, you'll need to definitely bring a few things for your enjoyment.
1) DEET/Icaridin bug spray
2) Deer fly patches
3) Gaiters
The bugs can be vicious and persistent at this park. And because of narrow trails and brush, gaiters are a necessity for scrub, shrubs and bugs (particularly ticks!).

I would like to plan a few overnight trips canoeing and camping. Do I have to reserve a specific camp site or is it first come first serve? If things change on route are you tied to you camp site or can you push on to another one if you find it unoccupied? Is there only one point of entry or are there several where you can launch begin your trek?
You are authorized to stay only on your designated, reserved site, and may not occupy another site, even if it's in the same cluster and unoccupied.
There is only one permit office that you must visit to check in and obtain permits (6700 Big Salmon Lake Road), but you can access your site from several areas - Big Salmon Lake parking lot, Arkon parking lot, the main parking lot at the park office, a boat launch t Desert Lake, boat launch on Devil Lake, Kingsford Dam, Mitchell Creek, etc. Call the park office for the best planning information.

Hi there - wondering what the elevation of the Akron loop is, perhaps you'd be able to help?

It is not too bad. A few ups and downs your highest point being 187.5m from what I can see on the topo map.
I had done a good portion of that loop with a full pack on and 4 days in, and I don't remember any major struggles. Ticks are very bad there so bring good bug spray.
I'm reserved to go October last week. I'm worried about the bear threats. Can anyone please give some tips or hands on experience about repellents? I hav read the articles but am not convinced yet. Please do help. We are there for 2 nights. This is our first hiking trip while camping so we are very excited about it. We are a party 2 (me and my wife)

According to the 2015 Information Guide for Frontenac Park, which may be online if you don't have your own physical copy, the office phone number is 613-376-3489.
There is an ad listing a website with the term "bearwise" or 1-866-514-2327 that might be helpful.
On page 10 of the Guide, there's information on Wild Animals, with suggestions on keeping food and garbage away from the tent. I believe campsites 3, 6, and 9 have "bear hang cables" but I don't know how to use them yet.
Hope you enjoy your trip. I've visited the park maybe 10 or 12 times over the years and never seen or heard a bear.
