Bob's son has asked me to advise everyone that Bob Findlay died in November 2017
2018年8月 • 夫妻情侣
He took us to find the grave (or memorial panel) of two of my great uncles. He was brilliant. It's easy to say "I'll never forget his tour," but it was so memorable I think I won't.

Westhoek is de moeite om de eerste wereldoorlog te herdenken. Overal kom je plaatsen tegen die de moeite waard zijn. Het flandersfieldmuseum, menenpoort, de graven de hill’s... te veel om op te noemen

My son, two sisters and I spent a few days visiting some of the battlefields, monuments and museums in Passchendaele, Ypres and Arras. Our grandfather was killed on 8th February 1918 and we wanted to mark his centenary.
The monuments are magnificent and overwhelming. The museums are packed with artefacts and information. The service at the Menin Gate is a wonderful memorial to the fallen. On an ordinary Tuesday night around 400 people of all ages, races and religions gathered to remember those who died for our freedom.
We stayed. In an Airbnb house in Thélus which was very central,

Personalized, informative and moving

My family engaged Bob Findlay as our guide for a tour to commemorate our my Grandfather’s award of the Military Cross in 1917. Although an Englishman, he had researched all the Australian battles specifically including finding the now declassified intelligence diaries written by the individual Battalion commander so was able to take us to within a 100m square area of the places where my grandfather received shrapnel wounds early in his war service and and where he was awarded the MC after being redeployed.

The site where our grandfather was wounded in an attack from the “Ungodly Trench” on a farmhouse the Germans had fortified as a command post isn’t part of any standard tour; indeed even Bob had never been there before – but he found it, took us there and explained the action.

The citation for the MC refers to “very trying circumstances” without giving any detail – it turns out that meant approaching uphill through mud across open ground to take 7 concrete machine gun bunkers spaced about 30 metres apart in the area that is now Tyne Cot cemetery.

Bob was engaging rather than didactic and clearly cared that we all (ages 13 to 84) understand and relate to what my Grandfather experienced. A wonderful teacher and a true gentleman.

Fantastic trip to commemorate 100 year anniversary of my great uncle.

We were in Belgium for a cousins to commemorate the passing of my great uncle who passed away in July 1917 East of Ypres. Prior to the meeting, Bob had done some extensive analysis from the details we had given him and he was able to work out where he was injured and how he got to his resting place along with maps.

We met Bob at the grave of my ancestor, and then drove to location of his battery, and then the first station where he was taken when injured. In a very emotional moment, Bob took us to the location where my ancestor was injured and here we lay a small cross.

Following this, Bob took us to Langemark cemetery followed by Tyne Cot.

Bob is passionate about his subject and showed us many aspects of the war. My ancestor worked in a gas company and Bob explained the impact gas had on those who came into contact with him.

The tour was very good (3-4 hours) and there was a lot to take in. If you are keen to learn about your ancestors then I would recommend Bob.

Tracing the last days of a Great Uncle in WW1
2017年7月 • 家庭
Bob Findlay did painstaking work finding out the last known positions of our Great Uncle who died in the First World War, even consulting other experts on the Great War Forum and plotting precise locations on maps which he left with us. He then proceeded to take us around the front line positions, the dressing stations and the military cemetery where our great uncle finally rests . He did it with great knowledge and great compassion. His personalised tours are pretty unique in the Ypres region and come with a very high recommendation.

Bob brings the battlefield alive - his website is aptly named. His research into my grandfathers recruitment, arrival at the front, his first action, his evacuation and ultimate death was meticulous. At almost every road corner he will point out interesting facts.
Bob's knowledge is encyclopaedic and well presented. I recommend you engage Bob as your guide. If you don't you will miss a treat!!

Bob Findley Tours Fantastic
2016年6月 • 夫妻情侣
My husband and I have toured the WW1 Battlefields twice with Bob and each time was excellent. Bob creates tours relevant to what you want to see rather than a generic tour for everyone. We were amazed at the information Bob was able to find for us and to be able to walk along the trenches where our grand fathers fought was so special.
We highly recommend Bob's Tour, it was something we will never forget.

Bob Findley ~ 5 Stars
2016年10月 • 家庭
A long time reviewer on TripAdvisor and a resident of California, I went first to the TripAdvisor site to find a great guide for our visit to Albert to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. And find one I did! We had three ancestors whose steps we (my husband, my Welsh dad, and I) wished to trace ~ two who fought with the Somerset LI and one with the Durham LI. I apprised Bob Findley via email in the 8 weeks prior to our trip, and it was clear from his communication (which outlined his research on our behalf, including the purchase of materials from the WO, etc.) with us that this would be an ultra-custom full day tour day.

He met us on time at the Ibis Hotel in Albert, outlined the plan for the day, provided us with three outstanding folders full of researched materials for each of the brave men we were there to honor, then drove us to every possible site where our ancestors had mustered, fought, survived, been injured, and, in one case died, this last poor soul meeting his end in a ploughed field in the middle of nowhere. Not only did Bob locate the spot where my ancestor fell but also the spot where the Maxim machine gun was located, assessed from military records and coordinates from the documentation. Bob's knowledge allowed him to access quickly the relevant battle sites, muster points, country lanes, and key locations. In addition, he showed us trench layouts and battle plans and drove us also to Mametz, Sunken Lane, the Newfoundland Memorial Park, Ulster Tower, Mouquet Farm, Gibraltar Bunker and the Australian Memorial, the New Zealand Memorial Cemetery, Delville Wood, and so many other unique and historical sites I would need pages to cover them all (note: we visited the magnificent Thiepval Memorial ourselves next day for the noon day service as well as Lochnegar Crater and many other cemeteries and did not request his help for these). He brought the full horror of the war to life with compassion and caring for all the lost souls and those who come to mourn them.

Helping families locate loved ones in both the Somme and Ypres, Bob, originally from the UK, now living in Belgium, brings a level of professionalism and devotion to the work. We were highly impressed and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a fully-customized tour of the Somme.
