Monday 13th June 2022, My husband I decided to go to Jervaulx Abbey, the second only privately owned abbey in England.

Jervaulx Abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery located in a peaceful valley setting in the Vale of Ure, a few miles east of the Yorkshire Dales. The monastery was founded in 1156 as a sister house of Roche Abbey.

Apart from its historical significance and the beauty of its location, Jervaulx is known for its horticulture; over 180 varieties of wildflower grow in and on the abbey walls.

Jervaulx was originally based at Fors, a few miles distant, but the land there proved to be poor for farming and the Cistercian monks moved to the current site. They were known for raising horses, and the abbey was the original home of Wensleydale cheese.

The abbey was destroyed during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, and the last abbot of Jervaulx was imprisoned in the Tower of London, where his signature can be seen, carved into the wall of his cell.

The abbey buildings were dismantled, but a large amount of the fabric and furnishings at Jervaulx made their way into parish churches throughout the Yorkshire Dales.

Thus you can find a carved screen at Spennithorne, the grave of Abbot Robert Thorneton (d. 1533) at Middleham, a gilded rood screen at Aysgarth, and window glass at Bedale church.

It is easy to visit the site; only an honesty box awaits visitors at the gate (we are honest people - we paid!)

Though the abbey ruins are not as impressive as other monastic sites in Yorkshire such as Rievaulx or Fountains, We actually enjoyed Jervaulx; the location is so peaceful.

I found inspiration whilst I was here as I wrote a poem called ‘Let Us Not Be Lost’. My husband and I spent over two hours mooching round the lovely abbey.

This is a beautiful place to visit if you are in the area.

The air of tranquility in Jervaulx draws us back again and again. We usually visit early in the day as we did this time and we were the only people on the site. This ads to the sense of both spiritual and natural serenity. We usually visit later in the year so the wild flowers were different ones but just as lovely.

Given the area, it seems very appropriate that the Abbey was famous both for its horses and its cheese!

There is plenty of parking opposite the Abbey. Both the parking and admission are via honesty boxes. Although this isn't directly to do with visiting the Abbey, we were sorry that the tearooms are no longer open.

A stunningly beautiful place filled with history and atmosphere; from the idyllic vistas framed by the ruins to the throughly interesting Guide Book our visit hear was great. Take a picnic and enjoy the peace, and please understand why the Abbey is left in its current guise before downrating. A top spot!

This is a lovely place - with an honesty box for admission - but there is an option of paying at the ''tea shop'' which we found only after the visit is ''permanently closed''. So there are no toilet facilities. If the owners charge people for entry then the least they could do is to provide, perhaps, a Portaloo. To charge people for entry (perhaps after a long journey) and then expect them to squat behind bushes is unacceptable and anti-social. So - yes - it's worth a visit, but don't expect the facilities to be as advertised - and there are NO TOILETS.

Very peaceful and plenty of space to walk round so you don't really see anyone else. There an honesty box for entry and it was easy to park

We took a picnic to soak up the atmosphere of this quiet and beautiful place. Plenty of benches to sit on and just lovely to walk through the ruins. You can buy books, postcards etc from a honesty box. It would have been nice if the tea rooms were open, but we went down the road for an ice cream instead.

Unlike many other places in the current climate there is no need to book to wander around the Abbey and grounds, but there are honesty boxes for parking (on the opposite side of the road) and within the entrance to the Abbey. It is a lovely, peaceful place to visit.

Lovely, calm and peaceful place to spend an hour or so. We liked the way it is kept a little more naturally than the bigger abbey's. We would have given a higher rating but we love a cup of tea and cake, but the tea rooms are still closed and there are no toilet facilities.

We visited with our dog Bella on a sunny afternoon and passed a pleasant couple of hours. I really liked how the ruins are presented in a lovely garden setting. The curved stones from the Abbey make the rockery beds and there are wild flowers everywhere. There is more left of the Abbey than I expected. The chimneys in the kitchen are very impressive. The whole place is very atmospheric

We visited the Abbey on an autumn day, which extenuated the manner in which Jervaulx Abbey is presented and maintained. The usual for this type of 16th century ruin is for the stones to be cleaned, mortared and presented as a modern preserved ruin. Jervaulx, on the other hand, makes you feel like you’re in the 18th century, with the Abbey just having been rediscovered. The ruin is well preserved, but not sanitised by modernity. You see and walk through the extensive site, following paths by the overgrown walls, dishevelled stonework and majestic arches. The owners have taken on the task of taking you back to the Romantic period. It truly feels like that as you explore Jervaulx, get a feel for the way it was before the Dissolution, and understand its history over the centuries. It is a challenge to keep the ivy at bay - the modern scourge of British countryside - and the owners do well, but I found myself pulling at the rampant ivy to help maintain the integrity of Jervaulx. The cafe is well worth a visit before or after, and be sure to sample the excellent baking. A very enjoyable and insightful visit. Well recommended.
