Interesting place, worth a diversion from the Severn Way, a short distance along the Sabrina Way. Nearby St Mary's church in Deerhurst also worth a view.

The shell of an Anglo-Saxon church that has largely survived thanks to it being incorporated into a medieval farmhouse before it was rediscovered by the Victorian vicar of the nearby, and also wonderful, Deerhurst church.

Unencumbered by pews, fonts and other more recent paraphenalia this gives a good idea of how the chapel would have looked. The fact that one end remains half-converted into an extension of a medieval farmhouse adds interest from another period - the timber construction is laid bare for you to see.

Park here, have a look and then walk back to Deerhurst church for a very enjoyable double visit.

Remote and beautifully sited Saxon Church. Very serene in and around it. Also an interesting history, built by a local Thegn in 1056 in memory of his deoarted brother.

Well maintained building showing its unique historical structure from Saxon times. The chapel was built onto in Tudor times to form an extended house, which is still privately lived in/owned, yet the chapel has been restored by English Heritage. Set near the River Severn and the village of Deerham between Gloucester and Tewkesbury. Free to enter yet parking costs 50p - £1 depending on how long you stay. There are paths nearby worth exploring, one of which leads to the river. Worth a short visit.

Very old church which means there is not a lot to see in it. Yhe building is very close to the river and as you approach there is a flood level marker.
Worth the trip as its very near to another church.

We came here quite the opposite way to most others - we came to find this chapel and then went to visit the church. There isn't anything 'to do' here so unless history is you thing you're going to be bored.

However - if history is your thing then what a place. How it survived is a total mystery, at one time it got absorbed into a farmhouse then later re-discovered. This leads to a most odd state of affairs when the bit that is the chapel is literally a kind of semi-detached with the (occupied) property it adjoins.

There are plenty of images of the ground level but I have added a few of the upper level, taken with a camera on a pole.

Did find it amusing there were two fire extinguishers in what ammounts to a stone building with walls a couple of feet thick - but there's H&S for you.

Odda's Chapel, close to the parish church of Deerhurst, Gloucestershire, is truly more than an historic gem, it's a real golden nugget!

Great thick stone walls, as high as it is long, pitched timber roof; narrow Saxon entrance doorway with typical 'horse-shoe arch, and another larger such arch between nave and chancel . . . Pre-Norman Conquest as clearly dated 1054 from a dedication stone found in a nearby orchard in 1675 and now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, with a replica in the chapel itself.

This is the UK's most complete Saxon chapel. Extraordinary therefore to learn that it was 'lost' for several centuries, effectively 'annexed' to the adjoining timber-framed house: a huge late-medieval fireplace was made in its western wall, its surviving timber lintel almost as wide as the width of the chapel, so that the nave could form a high domestic kitchen. A substantial timber-beamed floor was set across the chancel end, its structural timbers still left in place so that a main beam cuts across the chancel arch.

It was not until as recently as the second half of the 19th century that it was 'rediscovered' and returned to its original form. Now in the care of English Heritage, the chapel is neatly presented with the basic information, including a translation of its original dedication. Its modest simplicity somehow adds to its impressive solidity and dramatic height.

Not far from the River Severn, it is clear that the lower part of the chapel's walls are occasionally flooded. Approaching from the nearby parish church of Deerhurst, you pass through a modern heavy electrically-controlled flood gate. Beyond this is an interesting tall white water-post with heights marked in hands and 'fingers', as for measuring the heights of horses.

It's worth visiting if you are interested in old buildings, Anglo-Saxon history, churches, or especially all three. There isn't a lot of information and it's very small. I think I spent about 10 minutes there and less than half of that was looking around, I was mostly just enjoying the peacefulness. I combined this with a visit to the nearby St Mary's and I would recommend anyone who comes to see one checks out the other (both are free entry, and you'd probably pay to park here at Odda's Chapel to see either)

Beautiful location down a lane by a stream. Plenty of walks along the river also and neighbouring fields. The Saxon church is a basic stone building with wooden rafters and one wonders what it must have been like in days gone by. Some information boards inside the chapel would have helped.

Well worth going to visit this chapel especuially if you visit the parish church of Deerhurst at the same time. So pleased to see the restoration work to enable one to absorb our past heritage.
