I had never been and didn't really know what to expect. I thought for the price it was going to be lackluster, but I was completely wrong. I was just as enthralled in the exhibits as my kids were (9-6 y/o), and we could have spent the whole day there if we had the time. The tram running between locations was really helpful as well. The cafes were closed when we were there but you're allowed to bring your own food and there's comfortable places to eat. I will definitely take the kids again when new exhibits are open.

We parked on Great North Road by Western Springs and walked to MOTAT from there. We got tickets there. The tickets also included the tram ride which leads to the aviation hall down the road.
We started in the main area. There were quite a few different buildings with different displays. We went numerically. Most of the building had displays of items but also things that you can touch and play with. There were a few areas where you can play games or talk to each other on a phone. There was also a discovery area which was fun to play with. There was a children's play area nearby too.
There was also a "truck" ride inside which did a small tour of the inside area.
After looking around the main area, we caught the tram and ended up at the aviation hall. The hall was quite amazing with the very large planes inside the hangar. There was plenty of information as well as a short movie about NZ aviation history. The hanger was very nice to stroll around and there was a helicopter that you could play inside. The souvenir shop here also has different items from the main area. There is a carpark on this end but I think it was paid. We caught the train back to the main MOTAT area to get back to the car.

MOTAT as a concept is amazing and the museum has the potential to be amazing but it missed the mark when we went, there were a lot of parts closed so it felt like we were getting a half experience. I wish there were more interactive exhibits. Good for young families but kids older than 7 might get bored due to the lack of much open attractions.

Kia ora Holly, thanks for your review. We note you visited in July when work to upgrade our main exhibition hall at Great North Road was at its height. Scaffolding came down in September and the building is looking fantastic and many areas were reopened. Work to fit out the brand-new Te Puawananga Science and Technology Centre inside the building is moving at pace and it will be open to the public in a couple of months. It will be filled with interactive experiences involving concepts such as light and colour and energy. We hope you were able to take a free ride on a tram up to the Aviation Hall and experience all the interactive digital screens and police helicopter as well as the many spectacular planes on display. A new immersive digital experience traversing the history of flight in New Zealand has also launched in the Hall since July.
We hope you'll come back when the new centre is open very soon!

There were longg queue awaiting an excited event cleared by 8.30 pm and the crowd was properly managed to start event for the X mas Light show. Awesome lighting gave much excitement and gaiety for variety events welcoming the lively musicians in full swing. Decorations were perfect giving nostalgia of various events of good memories especially to kids. Carol singing attracted many joining merry making mood. Eatables of variety tasty items were available although big queues. Jovial bus trip viewing the areas were exciting especially for kids. Selfies and photos were in full swing for celebrations and memories for for a merry X mas and Happy New Year.

Air hanger was great, and MOTAT itself was OK but I struggled to understand quite a lot of the information as it was peppered with maori which was hard to understand unfortunately

Really sux only worth going to motions road aviation the other side hardly no inhabitants and have to pay for the parking apparently under renovation part has been going on in the last 3 years hopeless.

Kia ora, thanks for your review and we're sorry to hear you were disappointed. All the car parks in Motions Road, including the Zoo and Tapac car parks, are now paid parking ($2 an hour to a maximum of $8 for as long as you like). MOTAT's new car park provides excellent, secure parking facilities at this modest cost. Then there is a free tram to take you all the way to our Motions Road location and back!
Our main exhibition hall has been under renovation for less than a year so far, while refurbishments took place to improve the visitor environment and fit it out to become Te Puawānanga Science and Technology Centre, a landmark experience opening very soon!

A little disappointing. The aircraft display was the best part but was still missing stories and information. Would have been nice to see the inside of a plane.
The other part of the museum is definitely lacking. No trains. Trams you can’t go in or vehicles. Couldn’t even go in the signal station. Definitely missing the mark. Wouldn’t be a bad stop for kids. The active tram line was neat.

Kia ora, we're sorry to hear you felt your experience was disappointing. Our steam and locomotive trains are based at the Motions Road location, behind the Aviation Hall, they are not active every day, but on our Live Days, every third Sunday, there are several that take to the Western Springs Railway that visitors can ride on. We'd love to see you again some day soon, and our new science and technology centre at Great North Road will soon be finished and open to the public.

Took my 13 year daughter to MOTAT - she'd never been. We had such a good time, the lady at the front desk advised that we'd need a couple of hours to visit both sites, but we spent half a day just at one! Highly recommend to anyone interested in history, technology and/or how society has changed. Really interactive and interesting experience for kids too, my easily-distracted daughter was highly engaged throughout.
We also visited the cafe which had a carefully thought-out selection at food at very reasonable prices.
We'll be back for another visit soon!

This is a great place to see a lovely collection of historic airplanes. One of the members of the staff is very friendly and eager to explain the airplanes and their history. There are some other buildings on the historic grounds of Auckland where you can see old church and school as well as early pilgrim’s houses.

Broad range question as it depends on the interest of the women. Has a range from a working steam and old technology(cars, computers etc) to modern innovation. Also has a tram ride to an aircraft hanger with old aircraft including war planes. My wife and I are in our 50's and enjoyed it. Memory lane for a lot of things.

my advice would to not bother finding a motel specifically near motat, rather look into the best motels in central auckland . it's not very far from the central city
