If you are Buddhist, this temple is a lovely place to come and meditate. Its quiet and beautiful with many painted decorative walls and trim, as well as beautiful sculptures of Buddhist Dieties. I loved the sound of the monks chanting.

This is one of the two temples in the same area. One is for women the other is for men. Keep that in mind. If you are male and go to the female temple everyone will disappear. If you are female and go to the male temple.....they are Supposed to disappear... lol
Some amazing staues, prayer wheels, prayer rooms, buy some incense and help support the temple. Stay for lunch and try some food! Sit and talk with the Monks and the sisters. Beautiful, wonderful people and place.

I have been coming to Canada for over 15 years and have passed the Thrangu Monastery many times and thought it would be really interesting to see the inside.
Finally after passing it many times my Wife and I stopped and took the walk to go inside. There is free parking in the rear, but the entrance is a little out of the way but findable for sure.
AMAZING is one of the only words that come to mind when I visited this place...it was amazing the art work and skills needed to make some of these statues and paintings.
So vibrant and colorful is an understatement, it just has to be seen to be appreciated.
Don't wait as long as I did...go and enjoy the beauty of this place.

This Buddhist monastery is something to marvel. Clean well maintained and very respectful of your personality. Please visit and promote this place if you are on a trip to visit temples, mosques and monasteries. The whole of #5 Road is catering to these places of worship. This is Multi culturism at its best.

This is a wonderful place to visit, quite different from the other Buddhist temple in Richmond. It comprises one large building with the shrine hall the major feature. There are private areas for the monks. Although it looks like the entrance is at the front, you should enter at the back of the building. Follow the hall to the right and go up the stairs to the shrine hall (after leaving your shoes in the racks at the bottom of the stairs). The monks were very welcoming. When we got to the shrine hall a volunteer was cleaning it and gave us an impromptu tour as we were the only visitors at the time. She said the public is welcome to attend the ceremonies, and a schedule is posted at the entrance and on the website. Although cell phones and photos are not generally permitted, the volunteer allowed us to take a few pictures. Downstairs, outside the office, there are statuettes, malas, bells, dorjes, and prayer wheels for sale at reasonable prices.
If you are interested in Tibetan Buddhism, this is an excellent place to visit.

If you happen to visit the City of Richmond, this is a must see. Architecture is almost entirely from Nepal. The colours are vivid, thangka paintings are of highest quality. You get a great taste of Tibetan Buddhism. There are daily ceremonies you can participate in. And most of all, admission is free.

The Thrangu Monastery is located on #5 Rd in Rmd, sometimes referred to as "Church Row" because of the many religious temples, churches, mosques and institutions located on the road. Thrangu Monastery is a beautifully constructed colourful temple decorated and architecturally structured in Tibetan tradition. It is probably the largest Tibetan monastery in the Lower Mainland & is definitely unique. The interior is adorned with Tibetan & Buddhist scriptures, deities, and artwork. There are numerous Tibetan Thangkas for those of you who appreciate traditional paintings.
My favourite area of the monastery is the exterior side walls where you will find a row of small prayer wheels. You can walk along the row and rotate the prayer wheels with the palm of your hands. According to the lineage texts on prayer wheels, prayer wheels are used to accumulate wisdom and merit (good karma) and to purify negativities (bad karma). The practitioner most often spins the wheel clockwise, as the direction in which the mantras are written is that of the movement of the sun across the sky.
Occasionally the Monastery holds open house or celebrations open to the public. There is also a learning centre & program for people who are interested in Buddhism. The Thrangu Monastery is definitely one of my favourite places to visit on "Church Row".

There are "pujas" -- religious chanting ceremonies -- at various times during the day. The monks are very welcoming and gracious. This is a very large temple/monastery whose abbot is a major figure in the Kagyu lineage (although he is rarely in Canada; this is one of several of his centers). You can get here by public transportation, but there is NOTHING else around. I had to stay in an Airbnb while I was attending an event here. There are no restaurants or other attractions, but if you can't get to Nepal or Tibet, you can see this.
