Excellent preserved castle

Excellent castle remains seven stories high. Unique design. Very strong stonework. Two huge arched rooms formed its main base with rooms to the side on multiple levels. Definitely worth the visit.

Peaceful stop

Nice castle, you are able to walk up as well when its open. Managed by the OPW but free of charge when we went. Staircase is narrow as expected but no hand rail. Clean and peaceful stop along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Star gazing spot

Peaceful location. Great for star gazing and watching nature. The Castle itself is fantastic. Easy place to park. Good for picnics.

Great to explore

2022年7月

This castle is great to explore in that the stairs are available to go up several (5?) floors. The view from the top is stunning (and interesting). It is very small. It is a ruin, with free entry. Technically it is on an islet. Take care on the spiral stairs since they are tight with no handrail.

There is some interpretation available

A great piece of history

A quick visit to the castle ruins, we could see the castle from our BNB rooms which were great. Free entry, perfect picture spot!

Solid old castle …

This castle ruin sits at the head of an estuary and looks an imposing sight. There are info boards that relay the castle’s past history and you get to climb up a dark, spiral stone staircase to the top to see commanding views of the surrounding countryside.

Worth a visit if you’re passing.

Enjoyable

It's a really easy way to spend about 15 minutes.

It's a simple attraction, in, few photos, climb to the top, admire the views and that's it.

It's free, no one there trying to sell you anything. It closes at 6pm. Free parking and a small bit of history and background to the building is located in the car park.

Could give you some more history and signs/directions where the attacks came from.

Surprising find

Visited the castle after seeing a signpost in Ballylongford after arriving in Tarbert on the ferry. Really nice castle, met a local lady (Helen) at the castle who was really informative about local history of the area and the amenties of north kerry.
Camped on nearby carrig island west just over the bridge from the castle, beautiful peaceful setting. Recommend a stopover here if in the area.

Eravamo in zona e ci ha incuriosito questo castello. Aperto al pubblico, gratis, ben tenuto. La visita è allietata da una colina di rondini che svolazza al suo interno. Suggestivo, imponente, si eleva per 3 piani più un ulteriore ammezzato. Curato e con tanto di spiegazione storica all'ingresso. Durata della visita circa 30 min.
