The village of Grantchester is very picturesque and steeped in history as well as being the setting for a detective series.
As beautiful as it is Tuesday is not the ideal day to visit. The place we really wanted to go to was the Rupert Brooke. Alas they are closed all day on Tuesday. The Green Man doesn’t serve food on Tuesday and directed us to the Orchard Tea Garden.
The only other thing that upset was the clock. It was working. So many times my husband had visited as a much younger man and the clock stood at three, just as in the poem, but not any more. That was sad.
Other than that the village is lovely, as are the surroundings. There are beautiful walks to be had and all just outside Cambridge.

We decided to take a drive out to the village of Grantchester. Took us about an hour from where we live. Very pretty little village. We did finally find somewhere to park, just bare in mind parking is limited.
We strolled down the village past the Green Man pub, lots of people outside having drinks. We carried on down to the church, this was open. We went inside, it was lovely. Light and airy, lovely stained glass windows. We had a surprise because four adults were singing by the altar. They were singing with no music, oh my goodness they were amazing, we stayed and listened to 2 pieces that they sang. It actually made me cry listening to them.
The tea rooms not far from there was extremely busy so we didn't bother. We had a wander around, some very pretty thatched cottages and beautiful gardens.

Have loved the Green Man for 40 years, we arrived after a walk with dog and son and thought we had a booking, but wife had mistakenly made the reservation at the pub with the same name in Trumpington. Our fault.
Sat down for beer and bar food but learned that even soup could not be served to us in the bar (dog in tow), so settled for a portion of chips each. Being a person who loves to pay for expensive chips, I was excited to pay £7.00 for nine chips, three times. The Green Man has been thoughtfully refurbished, retaining some of its inherent charm.
Its great when a change of plan leads to a better plan, we left £42 lighter and walked on for 15 minutes to the other Green Man in Trumpington where we sat down in a convivial pub for a proper meal. Then back to town on a lovely footpath along Hobson's conduit into Cambridge.
A lovely afternoon in the end.

One of the things to do whilst staying in Cambridge (or if you are a student) is the walk along the river (Cam or Granta) to the village of Grantchester. Made famous in the light hearted detective series of the same name but has been a lovely place to visit for a lot longer than that. Go for a wander around, past Lord Jeffrey Archer's house and on to Byron's Pool or visit the lovely church or Orchard Garden tea room or Red Lion pub. All lovely. Not far from the city centre, so probably an hour or so would be a good stroll there and the same back.

Pretty village but not much else going on. We drove through on the way home from Cambridge, not much going on just pretty houses and a couple nice looking pubs. Probably nicer to see it if you have the time to walk there from Cambridge.

Tranquil and amazing village.
Wanted to visit after watching Grantchester and was not disappointed.
Lovely walk around, untouched and peaceful.
Well maintained gardens, full of bloom and colour.

We came here from Cambridge to meet a friend at the Orchard Tea rooms.The village is lovely(even in the rain!).We visited the beauriful church.

So as watchers of Grantchester we had to visit when we found we were close by. Lovely village with Thatched houses lovely to walk around and nice field leading to the river. We went on a Monday which meant the pubs were unfortunately closed. We did visit the church. A peaceful place

Is it possible to hire row boats/a punts anywhere along that stretch of river from Cambridge out to Grantchester

Yes you can , either a punt, a canoe or rowing boat, from Scudamores in Newnham , make sure you are taking a boat on the Upper River,its about a 45 minute journey by punt and absolutely beautiful, stop for a swim or a picnic and then end up in the Blue Ball , perfect day out
