Wow, this is well worth a visit, if your enjoy your history.
This is free and on a sunny day, it is lovely just to sit and relax.
There are a few sections of the rocks which have placards and derives from the first century AD.

Chester was a Roman army settlement (the name comes from the Latin "Castrum" meaning an army camp) and a small part of the Roman amphitheatre remains. It is very little, barely more than the foundations. Information signs are there and it is near the remains of the Roman bath and garden complex (more interesting I think). One can just get a feel for the place but nothing like other Roman ruins elsewhere. It is just east of the walls and if you are walking on the walls, there is an easy staircase to use form the walls next to the amphitheatre, making it easy to see when walking the walls. That's what we did. I would put this lower down on the list of things to do in Chester and give priority to other things, but it's worth a look if you have the time or are next to it. A short visit is all that's needed.

It is well worth a visit and almost next door to other interesting sites within Chester.

While there is not a whole lot to see and do at the Roman Amphitheater, it is something one should pass through as you walk about this historic city. If nothing else, little ones can run around and burn off some energy. I wish there were more to read, bit that us what Google and Wikipedia are for, right?

Remains of the largest amphitheatre in Britain. The medieval nunnery and the modern buildings nearby make the history seem more powerful. Close to the Roman walls.

It was nice to see the Archeology site, with lots of signs detailing what is at the site. Also plenty of seating spaces around the area

Revisit to Chester with the kids.
Lots of fun exploring the Chester Roman Amphitheatre for small children - not much for older children who quickly got bored.

The Chester Roman Amphitheatre is a wonderful look into the history of Chester ,designated a Grade I listed structure ,managed by English Heritage ,it was excavated in 1999 ,the largest Roman site discovered in the United Kingdom dating from the first century when the Roman fort of Deva Victrix was established.
Although primarily a military training site ,the amphitheatre was also used for cock fighting,bull baiting,wrestling,boxing and of course gladiatorial contests ,the amphitheatre was in constant use untill the Roman withdrawal from the United Kingdom in the year 350.
It's lovely to walk around the amphitheatre ,lots of interesting things to view and transport you back into time,it's most definitely well worth checking out if you're planning a trip to Chester .

I was unaware of this site the 1st time I was in Chester so it was on the agenda for this trip. Perhaps I have been spoilt by seeing more complete examples of Amphitheatres in other countries but Chester's is very underwhelming. It is a few courses of foundation bricks and I was unclear how much of that was reconstructed. Other than highlighting the presence of the structure erected by the Romans visually it teaches us very little. I spent at least 2 minutes observing the site.
