The mansion is amazing. Dogs not allowed but still stunning. It is famous for its tapestries and glass (although with blinds drawn to protect fabrics you dont appreciate how light the rooms must have been) , but the things I particularly liked were the concrete floor, the rush matting, the plaster frieze, the built in drawers in the file room and the tall chairs.
The garden also does not allow dogs and is nothing special, but I did like the huge yew tree topiaried into an umbrella and the orchard.
The dog loved the walk in the estate of which there is an almost limitless choice - wooded, grass land, short, long etc.
The cafe does accept dogs in and out despite what the website says, and did a nice range of food.

We visited quite late and really only got to see the hall. As a vertigo sufferer I found it quite hard to enjoy as the tapestries run to the ceilings which are incredibly high in places. Having said that the volunteers were really friendly and knowledgeable. Sadly the staff in the cafe were quite the opposite. We were greeted by a very grumpy woman who seemed agitated while we were choosing what to have. Then when we'd decided to have a cream tea she snapped 'there's no cream'! So much for a cream tea then. Apparently it was due to the weekend that they ran out of cream. What bad management. Definitely would avoid the cafe if we ever revisit.

Arrived at 11 and got straight through despite there being a long queue for non-members. Quick trip to the café for a snack and then on to grounds and house. Well worth a visit guides all very knowledgable and tapestries fascinating. Lovely 4 hours spent there.

I have visited Hardwick hall since I was young. We generally walk there through the grounds. Despite having taken our dog in the gardens on previous occasions we were aggressively told that dogs were no longer welcome. We accepted this and decided to move onto the cafe but we’re told we would have to pay £6 each just to visit the courtyard- and it was a good deal because generally they would charge £16 per person n. We had intended to have a meal and pick up something from the shop . Whoever has made this decision has no business sense at all. It’s self sabotaging. I shan’t go to the house again which is sad. The volunteers we encountered were aggressive and patronising and we came away feeling quite stunned and angry. They’re parting shot was “ if you agree to join the National Trust there wouldn’t be a problem”. Disgusting behaviour and short sighted decision making. Give it a miss.

I bike around this area, would use the cafe , and would be handy too use the toilets, but you need to pay the full visiting fee just too use these, why if im buying a cuppa and maybe a snack, they are still making a profit from me, dont need too go into gardens and hall everytime i go, mostly weekends, lovely views and land around the hall.
Pleasley pit has free cafe and toilet use aswell as Tervasal trail cafe, which are not too far from the hall.
So come on Hardwick organisers stop being greedy and at least open cafe and loos too all who visits the grounds, a man or woman on a bike miles from home, would welcome a snack, cuppa, and loo, there are a lot of cyclists that go round your grounds who would im sure leave you good reviews for you.
Surley it is greed if you have too pay a big fee first, before you actually buy some food or a cuppa.
How much is a cup of coffee please, "well that will be about £16 entrance please, oh then the price of coffee on top of that".
Hmmmmmmmm.

We came here with 2 pushchairs, the gardens are really stunning and clearly a lot of work goes into the maintenance. The parking and admission cost are bunched together. The house is beautiful and the volunteers are really knowledgeable and friendly. We ate lunch outside in the sunshine - the cafe service was a little slow and choice was limited to jacket potatoes, sandwiches, soup or pasties. There is a good selection of cake though and the scones were freshly baked. We had a nice day out!

How do they justify trying to charge £16 per person just to use the cafe. A lovely place in lovely grounds but the cafe is not worth £16 per person admission fee.

Funally getting some use from our National Trust membership we visited hardwick hall. We arrived at 11am as the house opens a small queue to the car park but plenty of spaces to park. Again a queue through the ticket office but moved swiftly.

The hall itself was lovely, more information would be good though as you walk around.

Too early in the season for the orchard and herb Gardens to have much on show yet

A huge place that was owned by the Devonshire family who also own Chatsworth. Elizabeth Shrewsbury, Bess of Hardwick, married four times and was the second richest woman in England after Queen Elizabeth I and she built the Hall to replace the old hall that remains next door. Friendly staff though could do with more information boards
