Great trip Started at Totnes Big thanks to lovely Robert the bus driver who made the trip especially memorable for our nearly 3 year old grandson

We did this on our second to last day in Devon and it was a wonderful way to round off the holiday. I'd recommend parking at Dartmouth park and ride and getting the bus down. It only takes about 5-6 mins and the parking ticket includes the bus.
The short ferry ride from Dartmouth to Kingswear is lovely, a relaxing way to travel. The steam train to Paignton is magical, full of old charm and the scenery along the way is stunning.
We got the steam and cruise ticket and finished off with an hour cruise on the river dart aboard the Kingswear Castle. A 100 year old paddle steamer. The scenery along the river is gorgeous and the tour gives an interesting glimpse into Dartmouth history.
All the methods of transport are also very dog friendly, which was brilliant

Today I took the Dart Explorer from Torquay to Dartmouth, with a pickup in Brixham. The cost was £17 for a return trip and left at 10:30am. I found the price very reasonable and the boat left exactly on time. The boat is very spacious and you can choose to sit wherever you want, whether that be inside or upstairs on the top deck. As the weather was decent I decided to sit upstairs and enjoy the views. The crew were absolutely brilliant, going through the safety procedures and giving us an hilarious commentary throughout the journey. The views from the top deck were outstanding and along the way we saw dolphins, seals, sea birds and even a Tuna. Apparently a very rare sighting indeed. The sailing time to Dartmouth took about 1 hour 20 minutes and there are refreshments available on board and toilets. It was a great day and Dartmouth is a beautiful town. The return journey back, leaving Dartmouth at 3pm, on the Dart Explorer was just as good with brilliant commentary from the crew. Highly recommend this day trip and so happy I got the opportunity to do it. Thank you to all the crew of the Dart Explorer.

Initially, we had looked into the South Devon Steam Railway but after having someone be very rude and ignorant in email and Facebook communications, we opted for this instead. Apparently this other company has received quite a few negative reviews about rudeness, so we had a lucky escape!
We booked for two of us and our two small dogs and had a lovely experience from start to finish. We caught the 10am train from Paignton, took the ferry across to Dartmouth, an hour or so spent wandering around Dartmouth, then the 12.30 river cruise. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed listening to the commentary. Caught the 14.45 train back, but this time paid £3 each extra to sit in the observation car. My advice would be to do this both ways as it really enhances the journey and was nice and quiet.
All the staff we dealt with were very pleasant and polite. Top marks for a very enjoyable day.

Loved it. We did the round robin. Open top bus Paignton to Totnes. The boat along the River Dart from Totnes to Dartmouth with excellent commentary. Some time in Dartmouth for a crab sandwich and ice cream then over on the ferry to Kingswear for the steam train back to Paignton. A lovely way to spend a day

Love this journey, travelled many times in the past but the loss of the ability to just turn up and return as you wish without having to book specific train times, removes the enjoyment and spontaneity that we all need when on holiday

We're sorry that you feel the experience lacked flexibility when you joined us on your holiday. The reason we initiated a seat allocation system and ask for expected train travel times is because we found it unacceptable for customers to stand on services that were busy. This system has ensured that no passenger is ever required to stand on their trip (asking passengers to choose a return train time allows us to calculate which services are likely to be oversubscribed). As a matter of interest though, we certainly do offer flexibility where we can in that all customers can approach the sales point wherever they are on our network to ask to change their ticket if their plans change. This does actually happen fairly often and, of course, we do change tickets to accommodate wherever possible.
We do hope we can welcome you to travel with us again!

Review: The Dartmouth Railway is really scenic even though it no longer stops anywhere. I really wanted to look around Goodrington & Greenway areas but the stations are closed which is disappointing & the company could make good profit reopening these stations. On All tickets which seem to be expensive for an 18 min journey you have to follow the specific time & seat they give you. You can only choose the times but I don’t think it’s quite right considering tourists will be using this & they may want to spend longer for example in Kingswear but the ticket won’t allow them to stay longer as it has a specific time on it.
But yeah the journey & locos are good but nothing else currently. I have to give a three out of five & see whether next year things get better

The journey time of 25mins does take in some wonderful Devon countryside views, views alongside the River Dart and, of course, the section along the coastline is wonderful looking out across the sea to Torbay and Brixham.
We very much hope you will take another trip with us in the not too distant future!

A beautifully restored train took us along the track to Kingswear. The staff at both stations were friendly. We passed people on the beach and saw beach huts and glimpses of the River Dart before finally coming into the harbour. It was a sunny day and the trip didn't disappoint. The ferry was a short trip as we were catching the Dittisham ferry afterwards to Greenway. Really enjoyed being on the water. A very scenic trip

Excellent day trip- we started from Dartmouth with a boat trip to Totnes. The captain gave a great commentary, pointing out places of interest and giving the back story. He slowed down so we could see the seals, herons, egrets, kingfishers and Canada geese. Totnes is lovely town, and we spent 3 hours here before getting the bus to Paignton. The driver was friendly and professional.
After an hour in Paignton visiting the pier, we got the steam train to Kingswear with wonderful views of the coast and river.
Thoroughly recommend this trip.

Do I need to book in advance for the train and cruise this Sunday 16th July?

Since the COVID shutdown the new business model means the service only runs from Paignton to Kingswear. Not stopping at intermediate stations means they don't have to employ staff at these and thus save money. For a commercial enterprise, not a stean preservation one, maximising how the money is brought in is important. Especially with the eye watering cost of coal these days ! To get to Brixham by train you will need a time machine.

Hi, you can't book via the website but if you call the Torquay kiosk on 01803 293797 they will book it for you. The bus departs at 10.00 on Tuesdays, Thursday's and Saturday's from Torquay Harbourside (Strand). Hope this helps?
