My mother in law took me and my family of two young children (ages 2 and 5) to this beautiful area. We first went to the play area which was lovely for the children and the staff were great. Then we decided to go to the pub for a late lunch. Only to have it ruined by a drunken mature hen party (must of been all over 50 which was the bizarre part considering their age), who when approached by my partner and asked to please watch their language while entering The Ship pub due to the children. First mouthing swear words at her then once joined by her friends all shouted obscenities at us and the children. The staff did nothing except inform us that they were staying at the owners rented accommodation and could only to move us outside where the old ladies followed us and started shouting c**t at my children as well as other customers, who were literally leaving due to it. Well because you know, when asked to watch it around young children why wouldn’t you do that to anyone and everyone?! Although the staff attempted they never actually spoke to them, despite all of this bizarre behaviour from a group of old ladies! Then we found out we were being served by two young girls only the ages of 17 serving alcohol (illegal, yes the staff, will be informing the police of course). So as it stands the group were staying at a home nearby which was being rented out by the owner of the pub and the play area at Morwellham Quay. After a week of no correspondence and him avoiding contact with us, I thought I’d share my experience with you all here. Come to this beautiful area by all means but of course don’t expect customer service or any form of normal behaviour as the owner of many of the establishment not only runs certain parts illegally but he will ensure not to look after his customers and only ignore them.

Parked up just looking to eat our sandwiches before looking at the couple of things that were clearly open and trading. We were shouted at by a man from an upstairs window saying the attraction was shut. We understood this and just wanted to sit and enjoy the sunshine for a few minutes, but he wouldn’t let us. Shame. Won’t bother coming again.

We visited Morwellham Quay whilst staying in Cornwall, what a disappointment all the attractions were closed, even the car park was closed so we parked on the grass verge, the only person we could find was a lady cleaning the toilet, we asked her if anything was open and she said she could open the little gift show for us the contents were very limited so we thanked her and left felling like it was a wasted journey.

Visited on Tuesday 12th November. The ticket office was closed and looked like it had been ransacked. The cottages were open but really dirty. We walked around the cottages then found the museum which was unattended. Then a woman in costume appeared and started to walk toward us then turned and walked away again. At that point so did we. Having visited the Black Country museum we were really disapponited. Certainly not worth the energy of driving there. Such a shame

We've been coming here for many years on and off. My first visit was as a child on a school trip and over the years we've bought our own children to visit and now we bring them and their husbands & partners when on holiday together. The village has been beautifully preserved and is a sheer joy to wander round looking in the old cottages and shops. This year we did the school mistress talk, always a joy and so interesting. We sat in the back row as we are the naughty family! The teacher had a good giggle with us while she did her talk and she makes it a lot of fun. The same lady also did the rope-making which our boys took part in and she even gave them the rope at the end. We made bread rolls in the bakery which was a lot of fun and then we got to pick them up at the shop when baked and tuck in. We also made chocolate lollies and learned about the history of chocolate. We also joined a group of school children in learning about the rock breaking that was carried out there daily by the children. Then came the train ride in the copper mine. Rick is a delight! He's so passionate about mining and so funny and clearly really enjoys his work!! We had a really good laugh and chat with him and the ride itself is so fascinating even when we've done it several times over the years. It was however my son in law's first visit here ever and his first mine ride experience which he really enjoyed. We finished the day by wandering round the back bit which has some animals and when we were there this time piglets!!! There's also Ruth's cottage to explore which is so quaint you get a real feel for the people who must have lived and worked there. We were there all day and for the entrance fee which is very reasonable it is a very good value day out for all. You can even dress up in the old fashioned clothes of the era.
Also I want to mention that if you have mobility issues as I do, Rick runs a little buggy to and from the train site as it's a little hilly on the way up.The whole village has a magical feel to it and you can almost picture the people living and working there back in the day. Oh and there is an extra fee for if you wish to ride the train but it's such good value to get in that the extra £5 is so well worth it.

We first went to Morwellham last year to the Steam punk festival. We had an amazing time and met lots of lovely people. This year we returned for Steam Punk and again for
the Cider festival. Staff are so helpful and friendly, nothing is too much trouble. There is camping on site for the festivals, amazing food and drinks and lots to do..all very affordable prices. You are free to walk about as much as you want and join in with any thing going on, such as chocolate making and dressing up in victorian wear. We will definately be going back for as many events next year as we can. X

As a family we had a great day out. Tim who drove the mine train was a fountain of knowledge about copper mining and collecting arsenic in Victorian times.
The mine train was so good. Amanda showed us how to make bread, make rope, Chocolate making, breaking rocks , She was also the School teacher. Do not be naughty?
The lady with blonde hair from the shop, you were so nice to us, thank you.
And to top it all off we had a pint and lunch in the Ship Inn, very nice indeed.
And especially thank you to the lady at the front desk , who saw our needs and acted with care you rarely see these days.
Thanks for a great day out.

We went to Morwellham Quay as a family over the Easter break. I must admit that my first thought as we drove into the carpark was "there isn't much here". How very wrong I was! This is a fabulous place, where you could spend the entire day and still want to return. The history is fascinating, and it is brought to life by members of staff dressed in costume. There is a Victorian schoolroom with a very strict teacher! We learned to make rope, that was such fun. Made a chocolate lolly. Met Truffles the goat and his friends. Saw Morwhellam pottery made. Learned how to make beer. And spent quite a long time in the The Ship Inn (where the food was extremely tasty it must be said). The staff were really friendly, particularly with the children. My grandson was absolutely full of his trip down the mine, he wouldn't stop talking about it. We visit this part of Devon every year, but have never discovered this wonderful place before. We shall certainly go back. We thoroughly enjoyed our day there. Wholeheartedly recommend it. It brings to life an integral part of the history of Devon and Cornwall, and the lives of the people who lived through it. It is incredibly atmospheric. A truly special place.

This is a great idea which didn't quite fulfill my expectations. There used to be a copper mine and a 'self sufficient' village grew up around it, to put it in a nutshell. I think I expected Black Country Museum or Beamish with stereotypical Victorian/Edwardian houses, shops etc. Morwellham Quay is a bit basic by comparison, it's the sort of village my grand-dad grew up in. It is very interesting (it's the setting for a TV programme, so you may have a feeling of 'deja vue'), but I can't quite say how it failed to make a real impression, possibly the 'swapping of hats' in that the same person did several talks, being a 'bal maiden' and then being the teacher, didn't gel with me. There is a train ride inside the mine (extra charge) a bit scary for some youngsters perhaps, but Rick, the driver, is a comedian.
