In the days of kindle and electronic downloads I wonder how long shops like this have left. I love them personally but did find the prices here pretty steep. 84 Charing Cross Road it is not!

I have been more inclined to check this place out than I used to be. The alternatives are fewer as the years pass. My favourite SH bookshop at the bottom of New Street was sold and the successors seem to have run it down, rarely open or may have moved on. It’s always locked and in darkness. I buy from a couple of the bigger charity shops but it’s very hit and miss and decent books go very quickly.

The Book Cupboard has a lot of stock, it is open reliably, the books are categorised, most of it is accessible but you can end up on your knees on a dusty flour trying to read the spines on the bottom shelves. A high proportion of the books are in good condition and there are lots of pleasant surprise titles but a lot of the prices seem to me to be unrealistically high, very often £5,10,12,15 and more, for books still in print or readily available online next day for much less. No one resents or resists paying the going rate for desirable stuff and stumbling unexpectedly on a little gem or something you wouldn’t have encountered elsewhere but pricing here is often a deterrent.

What a great find for a visitor! Proper "old school "second-hand bookshop, lots of high shelving packed with all-sorts, found some paperbacks I'd been after a while, brilliant! Had a good chat with the owner and a lady sitting in the shop, would definitely go back again on our next visit to Plymouth

Three floors of books on all subjects, sorted into categories and displayed on shelves. An old fashioned book shop for book worms of all ages. If you know what you're looking for, then phone the shop in advance to see if they can help. They have a warehouse in addition to the shop so there is every possibility. If you drop in then allow yourself plenty of time to browse. A cornucopia of old books and close to tea shops and cafes too. What a find.

Shocking! We walked in & some miserable old man behind the counter shouted at my mate for not shutting the door behind us. We both walked straight back out. As we did so, he laughed with two other guys shouting “Goodbye! Have a lovely day!”. Such a pity as all we’ve seen on our visit to Plymouth is nice, warm & friendly people. If nice, warm & friendly people are not your thing, go & visit this shop.

it's like walking into a book depositary - there are books everywhere! I was looking for a few things in particular, and managed to find most. The gent behind the counter was courteous and helpful, even letting me wade through the bags of books yet to be logged to see if what I wanted was there. I ended up spending about 2hrs here and would have spent longer if I could. My wee nirvana.

Rude, unhelpful and grumpy man lurked begins the desk menacingly. Stock is grubby, badly organised and looks as if it has been sitting on shelves for decades.

Passive aggressive signs stuck all over walls regarding bags upstairs.

Stock is overpriced. AVOID.

There is a largish stock. Almost all on shelves. You would hope to find something to buy. But as other reviewers have said the place lacks a welcoming or helpful approach or feel. I don't know whether there have been threatening incidents or if the shop suffers from uncomfortable levels of theft but I don't expect to be eyed suspiciously and cross questioned about what I am looking for, whether I have food or drink in my bag and that I can't go upstairs with it anyway. A couple of American students were talking enthusiastically about some historical biographies in and adjacent aisle from me were told to be quiet or leave. It was worse than being in a 1950s suburban library where no talking was allowed at all. Surely we moved on decades ago to the acceptance that books contain ideas challenges and entertainment and are not holy relics in the crypt of a mausoleum. This shop is depressing. My son told me that they ought to get half the stock out in trays on trestles on the pavement where they would quickly move dozens of books an hour.

I have to declare an interest, I long ago discovered the Cornerstone Bookseller at the bottom of New Street. The guy there takes an opposite approach on all aspects of customer relations, making his books accessible and his shop welcoming. Plymouth can easily cope with more used booksellers.

Used to love this store as have found numerous finds there before. However, when going there today, it seems like this will be my last visit. Went in looking for a particular book, staff didn't seem like he knew where anything was as books were poorly organised, took myself and a friend longer that it should have to find a simple classic (Dracula). Once we'd eventually found it, it wasn't what the owner had specified (wasn't just Dracula) and so we gave up our search. Once going back downstairs, we then were immediately treated like shoplifters since we had accidentally overlooked a sign near the stairs that asked for no bags to be taken upstairs. Owner failed to mention this even as we walked past him a rucksack in plain view. As soon as we walked down the stairs owner was very rude and demanded to look in our bags. After finding nothing, we relieved no apology, just him grunting about us needing to learn how to read sign. Was going to return to make a purchase in future but now definitely will not.

I like second hand bookshops and have been here a couple of times. It's on three floors the shelves are close and lots of them but unless there are huge stacks or a warehouse elsewhere I doubt if there are even a quarter of the 200k books claimed by the recent reviewer and the shop's own website. It's highly organised. Not difficult to find subject and author. I found it aesthetically I little too regimented. One of the fascinations of second hand book shops is the curiosity, the serendipity, the names, inscriptions, notes or marginal rubrics. I like something less arranged than this shop. I want to stumble on delights or unknowns. This shop seems to lack that. The large number of hardbacks whose histories and pasts have been pasteurised by being placed by the shop in those naff 1970s plastic covers over thee dust jackets.
